I created a script like: fixbacklight.sh which had the command to set backlight to a certain amount using xbacklight. Then I created a custom keyboard shortcut which ran this script. I am sure if you dig a little bit you can find some file which gets run each time you login. Installed xbacklight. Seems to have fixed the bug. Fn key + Brightness Increase/Decrease does not work.
