+1. Double commits is work and easy to forget. I like Steve's idea of
a quarterly drop and I agree with Jesse that we should be stricter
about what goes into a dot-dot release. I don't have much else to add.

Re: cvs commit: ant/src/etc/testcases/taskdefs/optional/net ftp.xml

2005-05-25 Thread Steve Cohen
Antoine: OK, I've taken a look. Here is the problem, or maybe I don't
understand EnumeratedAttribute fully.

In response to a suggestion of Steve Loughran the other day, I've
implemented all of my new attributes with the convention that a value of
"" means "Don't set the attribute - leave the default value in place".
This was to accomodate Steve's suggestion of wanting property-file
driven scripts.

Such a script would define

An optional property file could define

timestampGranularity=MINUTE

or

timestampGranularity=NONE.

If neither specified, the default to be used (whose value varies
depending on the chosen action).

I'm having difficulty understanding how this convention would fit into
the pattern of EnumeratedAttribute. There may be such a way that I'm
just not understanding. I'm still open to whatever suggestions you
might have on this score or alternative ideas to improve this code.

installation instructions for ant under jpackage

2005-05-25 Thread Steve Cohen
There have been some comments on the jpackage.org mailing list to the
effect that our manual doesn't really have correct installation
instructions for that environment, although elsewhere on our site we do
link to them.

I have rewritten the install manual page to add this content, but rather
than commit it and then draw comments, I decided to post it on my own
site temporarily for comment. If there is none, I'll just commit it.

http://www.javactivity.org/jpackage/install.html#jpackage is the main
link. There's also an internal link a few lines above. Otherwise, I
kept the content the same.

Re: Online Bookstore

2005-05-25 Thread Ted Husted
Looks good, Jan.

So, aside from the retailers, some of the publishers, like O'Reilly
and Manning, have affiliates programs too. Would the approach you're
using let you add publisher links for just certain books. For example,
the Manning link would apply to Java Development with Ant, but not the
others. Not a vital feature, just wondering. The links you have are
great!

Summary: JUnit test runner outputs to stdout on failures, instead
of relying on formatter
   Product: Ant
   Version: 1.6.4
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Optional Tasks
AssignedTo: dev@ant.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On test failures, the JUnit test runner outputs lines such as this:

TEST com.example.Foo FAILED

It does this regardless of which formatter has been set. There's no way to
disable the behaviour.

This means that when you make an effort to plug in a formatter which produces
good-looking output, you also get the "TEST" stuff cluttering your output.

I guess +0 from me on merging it. Important only to some people, of
course. Could wait for 1.7.

As I understand it, it affects people who set useexternalfile="true"
when running on a source tree containing spaces in the name on
Windows - the task breaks with a wacko error message.

The latter two conditions (Windows + spaces) probably represents the
minority of users, but it means that e.g. NetBeans cannot safely set
useexternalfile="true" in projects it creates, lest this bug be
triggered - which in turn means that Javadoc generation will fail on big
enough projects, because the command line for the classpath will get too
big.

On the other hand, the average Windows user who is writing his or her
own script by hand can choose whether or not to use the attribute; they
probably do not need to both handle a big classpath *and* keep sources
in a path with spaces. (Unfortunately when #27814 manifests itself, it
is far from obvious what you did wrong.)

Matt Benson wrote:

I believe you can actually put an XML declaration in a doc with multiple
top-level fragments, if you are using it as a parsed external entity.
(Only useful to declare the encoding.) But I guess that few people would
ever do this.

If so, we can do one of the following:

1) Disallow > 1 direct child of
2) Always write fragments, skipping the declaration.
3) Automatically include the declaration when there
is only one direct child element.

Eek.

4) Add some sort of cumbersome configuration options.

XML not being my forte, I can say that 2) is simplest.

(1) or (2) is simplest, but for (4) it might be convenient to just be
able to say

and omit support for writing a DOCTYPE etc. On the other hand, writing a
declaration manually with and CDATA is not hard.

There may be other subtleties for namespaces - e.g. if writing a single
element, you can automatically generate namespace aliases, otherwise you
may need aliases on each fragment. And careful about character encoding.

...

Possibly dumb semi-related idea: have the body of the task actually be
an inline XSLT script with dummy input and the option to use the
minimized form ("Literal Result Element as Stylesheet" in spec). Then
you could use e.g.

http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform";
  xsl:version="1.0">

In this case there is no need to worry about writing out XML precisely
(JAXP handles it), and you can write out well-formed XML decls etc.
using the full

though I guess you cannot write out parallel fragments this way.

But I think I am inviting a flame war for suggesting it. :-)

Re: AW: [Fwd: Some Thoughts on Ant 1.3 and 2.0]

2005-05-25 Thread Jesse Glick

The Schema file is there to support GUI tools for example. They
could prompt for required attributes,

This would be nice!

let you select enumerated attributes from a list,

FWIW, NetBeans would not need this - currently loads the
EnumeratedAttribute subclass on the fly and uses it for code completion.
But having this information in a static declarative format might be better.

Relying on such a format might not be a good idea unless it were widely
used and easy to create, though - I think it's pretty common to just
write a one-off task that you use in a script as needed, and it's nice
for a tool to be able to offer code completion and other structural help
with such a custom task. (E.g. NB analyzes custom tasks when you run a
script which defines them, as a heuristic.) The nice thing about apt is
that it could ensure that all the needed info is right there in the
java.lang.Class - not good for general docs but nice for finding
required attributes and that sort of thing. Not available for JDK
1.2-1.4 though.

BTW I just had a thought - should use of EnumeratedAttribute be required
for JDK 5 users? Maybe you should be able to just do something like

public enum WhenEmptyAction {fail, create, skip}
public class SomeTask {
public void setWhenempty(WhenEmptyAction action) {...}
public void execute() {...}
}

require integer attributes to really contain numbers ...

I think the signature of the task class already handles this case,
right? setSomething(int)?

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

How the IDEs solve that at the moment?

For required attributes, you can't solve it that I know of, without
hardcoding attribute names for well-known tasks (or trying to parse the
HTML tables in the docs, or something icky like that).

It might be nice if you went for option 3 *and* 4 (but not cumbersome!). More
than one "root" element forces no XML declaration and an option to allow the
encoding to be specified for the output of the XML document/fragment when the
encoding is different from the one of the enclosing Ant script.

I bet, other committers have similar experiences.

I'm sure I have, even with my limited experience.

This leads me to the subject of this vote. Let's get rid of the
branch, stabelize CVS HEAD and release 1.7.0-beta in a reasonable
time-frame.

+1 from me. Maintenance releases are a good thing, but they should
probably be reserved for the occasional regression or other serious bug.

PS: I also intend to start a vote that branches shouldn't live as long
as the 1.5 and 1.6 branches did but we do new releases from HEAD more
quickly. This will wait until this vote has been decided.

I think I would be +1 to this as well.

More generally, I think we need a clearer statement of what goes into
dot-dot releases. A lot of features have been mixed into 1.6.x as well
as bugfixes - and not just features, but changes to the
org.apache.tools.ant.* "APIs" (i.e. classes in ant.jar which people
would in practice refer to when embedding Ant or writing tasks or
listeners etc.), as well as changes to the syntax permitted for tasks in
build scripts (e.g. added attributes). Perhaps we should try to limit
such changes to those required for fixes for serious bugs, under some
reasonable definition of "serious" and "bug".

Maybe we should also request that any branch bugfix be accompanied by a
regression test, unless there is some reason why a mechanical test for
the bug is impractical.

Cheers,

As an example, the NetBeans IDE does define it as of version 3.6

Please no, it doesn't seem to be a total showstopper, and when we
continue to put improvements into 1.6.5 chances are we will never be

[PATCH] for #35044, ccmcheckintask no more requires a file or fileset to be specified

2005-05-25 Thread briberyjoust

Hi there,

here is the patch for bug #35044. The reason for that patch is:

Currently, the ccmcheckintask task requires a file or fileset to be
specified. Otherwise it won't run and gives an error. But: that task is
supposed to check in a given (might be the default) Continuus/CM
Synergy task. And such a task already knows all the files to check in.
Thus, no files need to be specified.

I hope, I followed all the rules to submit a patch. If not, I
apologize. It is quite confusing (at least the first time).

Regards,
Paul Schwann

I use ant in a windows environment, and I've ran into this bug several times
now.
I can confirm that the version "ant_20050525041200" (cvs snapshot) fixes the
bug, while release 1.6.4 does not.
I've tested this by running the "dist-all" target on the project I'm currently
working on (generate all distributions for the project, including sources and
javadocs. The target also uses some external tasks such as xdoclet).
I would very much like the bugfix to be included in the next release, so if
there's anything I can do to help/assert in this process, please let me know.

Summary: ant 1.6.4 does not seem to use ~/.ant/lib anymore
   Product: Ant
   Version: 1.6.4
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Core
AssignedTo: dev@ant.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Something changed in ant between version 1.6.2 and 1.6.4 which leads to the fact
that jar files placed in ~/.ant/lib are not being used by ant anymore. I looked
at Launcher.java which seems to have been rewritten w.r.t. finding the .ant/lib
directory but then stracing the ant process does show that the file gets at
least statted but it doesn't seem to be used.

% ant

BUILD FAILED
/usr/src/cvs-in/FortN/FortN/build.xml:35: Could not create task or type of type:
basentaskdef.

Ant could not find the task or a class this task relies upon.

This is common and has a number of causes; the usual
solutions are to read the manual pages then download and
install needed JAR files, or fix the build file:
 - You have misspelt 'basentaskdef'.
   Fix: check your spelling.
 - The task needs an external JAR file to execute
and this is not found at the right place in the classpath.
Fix: check the documentation for dependencies.
   Fix: declare the task.
 - The task is an Ant optional task and the JAR file and/or libraries
implementing the functionality were not found at the time you
yourself built your installation of Ant from the Ant sources.
Fix: Look in the ANT_HOME/lib for the 'ant-' JAR corresponding to the
task and make sure it contains more than merely a META-INF/MANIFEST.MF.
If all it contains is the manifest, then rebuild Ant with the needed
libraries present in ${ant.home}/lib/optional/ , or alternatively,
 download a pre-built release version from apache.org
 - The build file was written for a later version of Ant
Fix: upgrade to at least the latest release version of Ant
 - The task is not an Ant core or optional task
and needs to be declared using .
 - You are attempting to use a task defined using
or but have spelt wrong or not
defined it at the point of use

Remember that for JAR files to be visible to Ant tasks implemented
in ANT_HOME/lib, the files must be in the same directory or on the
classpath

Please neither file bug reports on this problem, nor email the
Ant mailing lists, until all of these causes have been explored,
as this is not an Ant bug.

Any thoughts?

Why not to add this functionality into normal
?

I suppose if you wanted to use entities,
already can do this (clumsily). This task (OUCH
actually doesn't compile b/c I forgot a file) was
exceedingly easy and enforces well-formedness of the
nested XML due to its being parsed as XML.

Nice. I like it! If we ever get round to finishing the httpPost task in
the sandbox, we have a Rest client system :)

Just curious... are we going to remove this from CVS?
(no rush)

yes. First I want to get to a stage with my revised (uncommitted) where
the tests pass, then commit it, tag it and pull everything. I cant do it
this week as my laptop is on loan, and that is where the code is.
