Hmm, for some reason I totally don't remember that there is a separate

Re: Updated Apache Ant listing in the EOS Directory

2007-11-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It's sometimes hard to know where to start when trying to contact a open source
project for non-development issues.

Thanks very much for your suggestions and advice!

Hi, Ryck.

The Ant developer mailing list is probably the best place to post messages that
are meant to address the community of Ant committers. This would likely be true
of many other open source projects, as well. I've cced the mailing list so that
others have a chance to review your Ant page and offer any information to
enhance it. If you don't wish to become a member of the mailing list, you can
follow any subsequent conversation by reading the archives[1].

I think that where a link to your site would make the most sense on the Ant
site is on the Ant resources page[2] and/or the ExternalResources Wiki page[3].
Typically, you would provide a patch for the resources page in order to make
that happen.

I hope that helps.

Re: Update [was Re: weblogic rmic]

2007-11-06 Thread Kev Jackson

Hi,

or we have a vote.

One thing is clear: weblogic rmic was broken on ant1.7.0. nobody noticed.

Well I've just tested with Ant 1.6.5 (from svn), and I get exactly the
same error:

[rmic] RemoteTimestampImpl must be a remote interface
implementation and should exist in the classpath

The classpath is fine (and the code works perfectly with compiler="sun")

This is the showstopper for an alpha release right now.

This email from 2001 (Ant 1.4) exhibits the exact same behaviour:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/ant-user/200106.mbox/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Namely, the weblogic rmic task requires a global CLASSPATH to be set. I
added a CLASSPATH var and all of a sudden the error disappeared. I'm
still not sure it works as I was expecting a WL_stub.class to appear in
the output directory, but the error went away.

Since this problem seems to have been around for 6+ years now, I vote
that we switch off these unit tests and move on.

[Vote] WebLogic Rmic tool sucks so:
[X] enough already, we need ant 1.7.1 released regardless of crappy 3rd
party tools that have never worked properly (update docs to point out
weblogic rmic glaring incompatibilities with ant, switch off the unit
test to get a clean build)

[ ] no lets bang our heads against a brick wall for a few more years
trying to fix this junk

Thanks,
Kev

Dear Bruce,

here: http://www.eosdirectory.com/project/223/Ant.html

If you're not the right person, please help me by forwarding this
request to the right project team member.

Ant has been submitted, published and has earned a 3-star rating in
our directory of enterprise-class open source solutions. Congratulations!

Here are some ways Ant team members could enhance the information in
the directory:

* If you have case studies available, please upload them here:
http://www.eosdirectory.com/casestudy/submit You may need to complete
a short registration first.
* If you'd like to showcase Ant's rating and participation in the
directory, please use the widget code snippet below on your project
site. It links directly to Ant's entry in the directory and lets
visitors get more third-party validation of your project's
highly-rated characteristics. Look at the bottom of the Ant listing in
the directory to see the ratings widget.
* There is NO fee or other consideration for contributing case
studies or using the EOS rating widget. They're free.

enterprise open source community with an in-depth resource for
locating and learning about enterprise-ready open source platforms,
components, frameworks and solutions. EOS Directory components include:

* The Software Directory: http://www.eosdirectory.com/directory
* A library of EOS case studies: http://www.eosdirectory.com/casestudy
* The EOS News blog: http://www.eosdirectory.com/blogs
* User forums for each project: http://www.eosdirectory.com/forums

Re: Where to place sponsorship link?

Gilles Scokart schreef:

Did someone have an idea where to place the link to the sponsorship page?
Did we have to place it in ant home page only, or do we have to place it
also in ivy home page

In ant home page, I think a good place could be:
- a separate menu Sponsorship at the end of the project managment menu
pointing to a new small page with the two required links.
- A separate section in the contributors page.

I was wondering if it would be both more effective and efficient to
include the required links directly in the menu under a separate header
sponsorship, so without an extra page in between.

Summary: Touch task fails when fileset is empty
   Product: Ant
   Version: 1.7.0
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: P3
 Component: Core tasks
AssignedTo: dev@ant.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The touch task gives the error "Specify at least one source--a file or resource
collection." when the nested fileset yields no files to touch.

It's a problem because I want to be able to touch files only on certain
conditions. This build.xml snippet has been working fine in ant 1.6.4:

This bug appears to have been introduced in revision 277936, Mon Mar 14 11:45:29
2005 UTC. See the diff here (line 224):

http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/ant/core/trunk/src/main/org/apache/tools/ant/taskdefs/Touch.java?r1=277936&r2=349637&diff_format=h

I can get it working using this change:

$ svn diff src/main/org/apache/tools/ant/taskdefs/Touch.java
Index: src/main/org/apache/tools/ant/taskdefs/Touch.java

I'm not sure this is 100% appropriate, but it works for me.

I always thought this was a mistake personally. Each build should be
in charge here, and if you want to coordinate builds to share a common
dir, pass a property down the sub-build tree. One easy way to do this
would be the ability to set a *user* property from within a build,
which is always propagated down. --DD

I ended up writing a custom executor that can skip optional targets if
they don't exist; the optional targets have to be called out specifically
in a property. Currently it only works for targets passed on the command
line, as the project toposort code will still choke on missing targets
when processing target dependencies. I'll have to write a custom toposort
method to handle the latter case.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Should be on the Ant home page (adding it to Ivy's home page as well
won't hurt, of course).

One thing is clear: weblogic rmic was broken on ant1.7.0. nobody noticed.

I can only assume that the test tests the behavior of an old version

Perhaps, but it behaves as if the classpath is messed up, not as if the
weblogic tool is incorrect in some way

Re: terminating running builds better

Eclipse is pretty similar to #1.
We have a progress monitor / build listener within which we check to see
if the user has requested to cancel the build.
If the monitor is cancelled we throw a OperationCancelledException which
halts the execution of the build from the Eclipse entry point and reports
the cancelled message to the user.

well, I'll do the same thing. Now I know it works.

Ant-wise, we could create an interruptable logger that lets you do this
formally; the main reason for doing so would be to add tests for it.
This is clearly an important use case.

What do IDEs do to stop ant builds? just kill the thread/process?

NB behaves as follows:

1. It sets a special flag. The next time any BuildListener/BuildLogger
method is called on the IDE's listener, it will throw a BuildException,
which usually stops the build.

2. If several seconds have elapsed with no listener method, or if the
build did not stop for any other reason, Thread.stop is called.

For example, if is the active task, any output
printed will cause #1 to be triggered. Otherwise, ThreadDeath is caught
by the task, which stops the external process and then rethrows.

Not perfect but seems to work reasonably well in practice. #2 could
probably be improved to first try Thread.interrupt and only use
Thread.stop as a last resort.

Re: Optional target support?

The easy way is to have a common.xml that is included in
by each subproject. The common.xml would have a "foo"
target with an empty implementation.

Any sub project could then have there own "foo" target that
would override the imported one.

Thanks Peter. That occurred to me as well; unfortunately, I can't sell
retrofitting hundreds of build.xml files in order to make this optional
target stuff happen.

Going forward you're absolutely right: all the subprojects should be using
a common import & we plan to do that in a future release; the main issue
is that these subprojects predate import support & the sheer volume of
them means that a retrofitting effort will take too long and introduce too
much risk to an effort that the bosses want done yesterday...

you cant control common import files once you also include third party
projects into your build tree and use ivy to choreograph it.

For the new executor I'm doing for smartfrog, I looked at and
decided to change it to make targets optional.

1. we could add this to subant "skipmissingtargets"
2. I'd also like to give subant the ability to set the basedir, the way
 does

Hi,

I meant the creation of the ant-weblogic.jar.

Well I don't think that's a problem anyway as test case clearly calls
the weblogic rmic tool and clearly executes before failing to find the
test class - I guess we don't ship an ant-weblogic.jar anymore

Does it work with JDK5?

Nope, it also doesn't work on 1.4.2 (the oldest jdk I tracked down)

I meant the creation of the ant-weblogic.jar.

Does it work with JDK5?

Where to place sponsorship link?

Did someone have an idea where to place the link to the sponsorship page?
Did we have to place it in ant home page only, or do we have to place it
also in ivy home page

In ant home page, I think a good place could be:
- a separate menu Sponsorship at the end of the project managment menu
pointing to a new small page with the two required links.
- A separate section in the contributors page.
