Re: When to move Ant to SVN?

2005-03-11 Thread jm

If we do keep CVS open for 1.6 maintenance it will mean merging changes
between svn (1.7) and cvs (1.6). That will be difficult, IMHO. I don't think
we want to straddle CVS and SVN. Just a single jump across before the release
will be cleaner.

Would this really be a problem if we would only fix serious bugs on 1.6
after the 1.6.3 release. (This includes no more nice to haves on 1.6.x)

It would exist in SVN as well as /branches/ANT_16_BRANCH.

But I really hope 1.6.3 will be the last release from that branch.

I think that 1.6.3 is nearly ready to go out.
Moving to svn would delay it's release.
The problem is that when we move to svn, the usual practise is for
infrastructure to lockdown our CVS. It will be difficult to support any
required changes on the 1.6 branch if it's locked down. i.e. any 1.6
support may need to be done in svn. If that's the case, it may be better
to move to svn for the release rather than after.

In the end, this is just my view. If you are happy to maintain 1.6.3
across CVS/SVN, then that's ok too.

I do not agree.
I think that 1.6.3 is nearly ready to go out.
Moving to svn would delay it's release.
Then the move should be made to svn for ant 1.7.

Look at it differently
do you want to do it
(a) before doing the releases of Ant1.6.3, Ant1.7
(b) during
(c) after
Do before both releases. If we did 1.6.3 on CVS then we would need to
keep the branch open in CVS for any fixes etc. I'd prefer to go to svn
before the release, get it setup and working well and then do the
releases.

IMHO at the point in time where we'd create the 1.7 branch in CVS.

I would stay on cvs until 1.6 branch is closed, means 1.7 is before the
door.
- develop on cvs 1.6.3
- develop on cvs 1.7 until release
- migrate the 1.7 release to svn
- ship 1.7 from svn

The question really is when, not if.

Shall we do it together with the creation of the antlibs repo or
should we wait a bit longer?
