[~dossett], can you rename the module to dist/packaging and also move src/bin
and src/conf to the new module? Thanks

[~svenkat], assembly goal is deprecated and suggested way is to create new
module:
https://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-assembly-plugin/faq.html#module-binaries.
 Can we go ahead with this change?

[jira] [Created] (ATLAS-135) Re-model hive type system

2015-09-03 Thread Shwetha G S (JIRA)
Shwetha G S created ATLAS-135:
-

 Summary: Re-model hive type system
 Key: ATLAS-135
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ATLAS-135
 Project: Atlas
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Shwetha G S

As of now, hive model looks like copy of hive metastore schema. For example,
some important info like table type is part of parameters which is map. We should re-model this to make search easier

 With hive hook posting entities to be registered in message, we need a way of

 hive_db, the de-duping should be on clustername and dbname. The clients

Atlas has hive hook that can be added to hive CLI and hive server2. The hook
captures all hive commands and registers the corresponding entities in atlas.
import-hive.sh is added for one time use to import existing hive metadata at
the time of hook set-up. Bridge-Hive.twiki contains the details of setting up
atlas hive hook.

 building process and put the HiveMetaStoreBridge into jars under

 As of build 41 Jenkins is showing mainline build failures, for example
 https://builds.apache.org/job/apache-atlas-nightly/41/changes
 This continues into build 42
 I initially observed this in my own local environment (ubuntu 15.04 - oracle
 java 7 u80) after updating my build with the latest changes. Not yet
 identified the exact cause of the failure, but my output log is basically the
 same as jenkins is reporting
 The only change in build 41 I can see is ATLAS-80
 https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ATLAS-80
 I couldn't see a JIRA open already on this.

in ApplicaitonProperties.get, the loop to print out values if debug enabled
gets executed whether debug is enabled or not. Not sure if it's truly that

logger.isDebugEnabled() call?
{quote}
Yes, makes sense. ApplicaitonProperties is a singleton and its not expensive to
retrieve values and there are not many properties. So, its ok for now

{noformat}
Why were SecurityProperties changed from 'static final'?
{noformat}
In interafce, all fields are public static final by default. So, qualifiers are
redundant

 We use commons-configuration for application properties and 1.x that we use
 doesn't support variables in properties. 2.x has support for variables, but
 is in beta and is not production ready.
 Meanwhile, we can support it using EL expression and substitute using system
 properties.

-
Priority: Critical  (was: Major)

 Support for variables in application properties

 Key: ATLAS-80
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ATLAS-80
 Project: Atlas
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Shwetha G S
Assignee: Shwetha G S
Priority: Critical

 We use commons-configuration for application properties and 1.x that we use
 doesn't support variables in properties. 2.x has support for variables, but
 is in beta and is not production ready.
 Meanwhile, we can support it using EL expression and substitute using system
 properties.

 Inconsistent metadata content
 -

 Key: ATLAS-61
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ATLAS-61
 Project: Atlas
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: David Kaspar
 Attachments: application.log

 Steps to reproduce:
 build Atlas binaries and install it to a fresh directory (aka in untar the
 binary artifact to new/empty directory) and run:
 {code}
 apache-atlas-0.6-incubating-SNAPSHOT/bin/atlas_start.sh
 sleep 30
 curl http://127.0.0.1:21000/api/atlas/types
 # it prints:
 {results:[Process,Infrastructure,DataSet],count:3,requestId:1244107514@qtp-1475081618-0
  - 4ced54d8-a726-4384-8e97-3f3d5535d307}
 apache-atlas-0.6-incubating-SNAPSHOT/bin/atlas_stop.sh
 apache-atlas-0.6-incubating-SNAPSHOT/bin/atlas_start.sh
 sleep 30
 curl http://127.0.0.1:21000/api/atlas/types
 # it prints:
 {results:[hive_function_type,hive_index,Process,hive_column,hive_serde,hive_function,hive_resourceuri,hive_table,hive_storagedesc,hive_principal_type,hive_process,hive_resource_type,hive_type,hive_object_type,Infrastructure,hive_order,hive_role,DataSet,hive_partition,hive_db],count:20,requestId:500065027@qtp-1586292005-0
  - 22906b64-8c9e-4f1d-97b6-6eadf2a71bbf}
 {code}
 Note that I have not been load any types - I just started, stopped and then
 started the atlas again and it printed inconsistent types.

[jira] [Created] (ATLAS-80) Support for variables in application properties

2015-07-20 Thread Shwetha G S (JIRA)
Shwetha G S created ATLAS-80:

 Summary: Support for variables in application properties
 Key: ATLAS-80
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ATLAS-80
 Project: Atlas
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Shwetha G S

We use commons-configuration for application properties and 1.x that we use
doesn't support variables in properties. 2.x has support for variables, but is
in beta and is not production ready.

Meanwhile, we can support it using EL expression and substitute using system
properties.

Yes, having support for variables in properties is useful. But thats more
involved and requires support for EL function and making sure application
properties are loaded once. Lets use this jira to address relative paths as
relative paths are useful even with variable support. Created ATLAS-80 for
variable support

 With hive hook posting entities to be registered in message, we need a way of
 de-duping the entities on some value on server. For example, for type
 hive_db, the de-duping should be on clustername and dbname. The clients
 should be able to specify what the de-duping criteria is

We need notification framework for two purposes:
1. The atlas hook in the external components can post the entities to be
registered as a message so that the processing in hook is minimal and the
entity registration is reliable
2. Need notifications on type and entity mutations which can be used in policy
engines

Yes, we could move to hadoop style configuration. Thats bigger change and lets

 Currently, hive hook executes in background thread pool and is an best effort
 approach to register entities. But this needs to be reliable for data
 governance to be effective
 One way is - in hive hook, add the entities to some messaging framework and
 atlas server can read the entities from the message and register in atlas.
 Since, posting message is faster, we can do it synchronously and hence
 reliable entity registration.
 We can start with kafka for messaging, but any other messaging framework
 should be pluggable

There are some properties that are common to both server and client - like
enableTLS for now. Down the lane, there will be more - atlas server
endpoint(server to bind to given address), messaging server endpoint etc. So,
its better to have single copy of the configs and distribute across server and
client machines than deal with discrepancies. This is how its used in other
projects as well
