AFAIK there are no rules to avoid students to contact Apache projects,
submit patches, participate in discussions etc.

You have been given some incorrect information (and the website needs to
be updated to). The correct list is ment...@community.apache.org and the
 subscription address is:

 mentors-subscr...@community.apache.org

Re: [jira] [Commented] (COMDEV-248) add /dist/ health issues

2018-01-18 Thread Shane Curcuru
For those who don't know Henk, he's built tooling and websites for
checking and understanding keysigning and releases here at Apache for
ages and ages. This would be a great addition to the reporter tool.

My only comment (for later) is to ensure that when issues are found in a
project, we make sure that the documentation about what the problem is
and how to fix is clear for newer committers. Henk's already written
this kind of stuff in the README page though, so that should be easy:

  https://checker.apache.org/doc/README.html

Re: [jira] [Commented] (COMDEV-248) add /dist/ health issues

2018-01-18 Thread Henk P. Penning

Hi,

  Regarding : https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-248

Talked with Shane Curcuru on infra hipchat.

  BASE = https://checker.apache.org/json/

  The idea is to include $BASE info in https://reporter.apache.org/ ;
conditionally : nothing is shown if there are no issues to report.

  The idea is :

-- periodically fetch the BASE on projecs-vm.apache.org

-- to fix "getjson.py" so the output of (for instance)
 https://reporter.apache.org/getjson.py?only=httpd
 contains an attribute like
   { ..., "checker" : { "httpd": { "problem_count" : N } }, ... }

-- fix render.js to (conditionally) show the count + one or two references.

  The plan is to :

-- confer with Daniel Gruno, the main author of reporter.
-- deploy a copy of getjson.py (as getjson-dev.py) and take it from there.

  As I'm new to community-dev and projects-vm.apache.org,
  I have these questions :

-- Is this plan the proper way to fix stuff in reporter.apache.org ?
-- Can I get access to projects-vm.apache [necessary to understand
the current code ; not everything is in svn or git] ?

  Thanks ; regards,

  Henk Penning -- apache.org infrastructure ; dist & mirrors

It's September 12-14 in Hamburg, right? If that's correct I could do a
keynote on general ASF things, preferably on the 13th or 14th. It
looks like I'll be in Berlin earlier that week anyway.

Re: Solutions Hamburg 2018

2018-01-18 Thread Christofer Dutz
Hi All,

So, I just had a meeting with Mr. Rösler from the OSBA and we talked about how
we could thematically setup our shared half-day track.

OSBA seems to advocate usage of open source in governmental organizations and
are more concentrated on products than technology. I did sense a general
preference of a GPL concept, but I think I did manage to provide the good
reasons, why a more liberal license does help adoption when it comes to
technological “products”. They seem to employ a lobbyist that is trying to
counteract the commercial companies’ lobbyists in Berlin in a quest to bring
more open-source to the government in general and reduce the dependency on
individual companies.

This is the general plot we came up with:

- Into (30 min):
o We set the stage for the track

- Open-Source’s heart is participation (40 min)
o Giving and getting back: Why giving can be rewarding
o Reasons for personal participation
o Reasons for commercial participation
• Open-Sourcing products
• Letting employees participate
• Providing commercial support

- Trust (40 min)
o Multiple-Eyes concept (open code)
o Availability of support
• Community
• Commercial
o Reduced unilateral dependency
o Protection against legal problems

- Open-Source: It’s not all the same (40 min)
o GPL vs Apache (From a license point of view)
o Eclipse vs Apache vs ? (From an organizational / community view)
o (GPL for Products / Apache for technology)?

- Wrap-Up (15 minutes)

We would share each block and provide about 50% of each block.
Providing practical examples is preferred over theoretical talks (Stories from
the trenches).
Preference for German language, but not a requirement.
We would exchange our general abstracts with OSBA to allow preparing the track
in a way that it fits together.

Track-Title: TBD but should be catchy and not boring.

This is good to hear ;-)

It's September 12-14 in Hamburg, right? If that's correct I could do a
keynote on general ASF things, preferably on the 13th or 14th. It
looks like I'll be in Berlin earlier that week anyway.
