[jira] [Commented] (COMDEV-544) Improve comdev website navigation to GSoC mentor resources

>
> h1. Purpose
> Improve comdev website navigation to Google Summer of Code (GSoC) mentor
> resources.
> h1. Context
> Having been ‘away’ for a few years, this year I decided to make an attempt to
> re-engage with the GSoC program.
> I quickly realized that I was totally out of touch having absolutely no idea
> where the mentor community conversations were happening (they happen on
> ment...@community.apache.org) and being hopelessly unable to locate GSoC
> mentoring documentation via the comdev website.
> Thankfully [~sanyam] [pointed me at the
> documentation|[https://lists.apache.org/thread/dqmrwzjogl3sdb2v8s36v8mxf5o1yqsj]]
> and I was able to get back up to speed. Thank you Sanyam :)
> h1. Challenges
> Looking at [https://community.apache.org/gsoc/], as of writing, although
> loads of content exists for students (which is great) no navigation exists to
> mentor resources.
> In my case, this meant that I couldn’t find and entirely missed the excellent
> content available at [https://community.apache.org/mentoring]/.
> h1. Proposal
> I think that a “{*}Mentors: read this{*}” Section should be added to
> [https://community.apache.org/gsoc/] which simply hyperlinks to the relevant
> content from above.

These are all good, but I am *very* concerned that we would be, or be perceived
as, a bunch of heavies showing up to Enforce The Rules. We should endeavor to
ensure that any list of Red Flags is offset by a list of best practice and good
advice. Because scolding people for breaking the rules is *much* easier than
giving good advice, and I am concerned that people wishing to get involved will
see that as an easy way in, and thus poison the well for the program in general.

I, for one, don't want to make it easier for PMCs to write their reports. We
want them to actually think about their community health. The report is an
opportunity for introspection and reflection, not just a "press this button to
tell us what we already know." As a director, I already have access to this
auto-generated content, and I read it *in addition to* the project report. Once
we get to the point where projects are merely approving an auto-report, we no
longer have any actual project oversight going on.

Thanks. Fixed.

The larger issue here, of course, is that we *do* own feathercast.org, but at
the moment do not control the DNS for this domain. David Reid owns the domain,
and has indicated willingness to transfer. We just haven't done it yet. I'll
remind him the next time I talk to him.

Thanks for looking out for this!

> I have just noticed that on the Twitter profile of FeatherCast there is a
> wrong link to the website.
> The Twitter profile is:
> Actually is pointing at the following wrong URL:
> But I think that it should be the following:
