REGARDING GSOC 2017

2017-11-05 Thread Rashi Asthana
I just wanted to know how one should get started with the project. I am a
B.Tech Computer Science second year student. So how should I get into this.
I would be really enlightened if you tell me the same.

Re: Regarding participation in GSOC 2017 - Apache Mahout

2017-03-26 Thread Adina Crainiceanu
Trevor,

The student needs to submit a proposal for GSOC on the official GSOC
website and compete with all others for the spots that will be assigned to
ASF.
If your project wants to propose an idea for GSOC, record that in JIRA and
add gsoc2017 as a label, so it is listed in the list of ideas from ASF.

If you want to become a mentor for GSOC, you should first subscribe to
ment...@community.apache.org by sending an email to
mentors-subscr...@community.apache.org- use an email address connected to
your apache id.

In order to receive the official invitation to become a mentor for Mahout
for GSOC you need to get acknowledged as a committer "in good standing"
with the project. For that you have to send an email to the Mahout PMC
list, cc-ed to ment...@community.apache.org to be acknowledged as a
committer in good standing Sample email below:

to priv...@mahout.apache.org
cc ment...@community.apache.org

subject: GSOC mentor request for [your name here]

Hi [Apache project PMC],

Please acknowledge my request to become a mentor for Google Summer of Code
2017 for [Apache project] (by replying to all with an ACK message).

I would like to receive the mentor invite at [email address connected to a
Gmail account]
>>>

Once someone on the private@mahout replies (to private@mahout and
mentors@community) with an acknowledgement (you can ack yourself as member
of PMC), the Apache system admin for GSOC, which is on the
mentors@community.a.o list will send you a mentor invite

Below is a message sent some time ago with useful info for GSOC:

Subject: Google Summer of Code 2017 is coming
To: ment...@community.apache.org

Hello PMCs (incubator Mentors, please forward this email to your podlings),

Google Summer of Code [1] is a program sponsored by Google allowing
students to spend their summer
working on open source software. Students will receive stipends for
developing open source software
full-time for three months. Projects will provide mentoring and project
ideas, and in return have
the chance to get new code developed and - most importantly - to identify
and bring in new committers.

The ASF will apply as a participating organization meaning individual
projects don't have to apply
separately.

If you want to participate with your project we ask you to do the following
things as soon as
possible but by no later than 2017-02-09:

1. understand what it means to be a mentor [2].

2. record your project ideas.

Just create issues in JIRA, label them with gsoc2017, and they will show up
at [3]. Please be as
specific as possible when describing your idea. Include the programming
language, the tools and
skills required, but try not to scare potential students away. They are
supposed to learn what's
required before the program starts.

Use labels, e.g. for the programming language (java, c, c++, erlang,
python, brainfuck, ...) or
technology area (cloud, xml, web, foo, bar, ...) and record them at [5].

Please use the COMDEV JIRA project for recording your ideas if your project
doesn't use JIRA (e.g.
httpd, ooo). Contact dev@community.apache.org if you need assistance.

[4] contains some additional information (will be updated for 2017 shortly).

3. subscribe to ment...@community.apache.org; restricted to potential
mentors, meant to be used as a
private list - general discussions on the public dev@community.apache.org list
as much as possible
please). Use a recognized address when subscribing (@apache.org or one of
your alias addresses on
record).

Note that the ASF isn't accepted as a participating organization yet,
nevertheless you *have to*
start recording your ideas now or we will not get accepted.

Over the years we were able to complete hundreds of projects successfully.
Some of our prior
students are active contributors now! Let's make this year a success again!

Cheers,

Uli

P.S.: Except for the private parts (label spreadsheet mostly), this email
is free to be shared
publicly if you want to.

Hi Francesco (nice name, BTW...),
I am V.P. Apache Syncope and also designated mentor for GSoC 2017.

Thanks for submitting your proposal for SYNCOPE-152: I have just found
it in the GSoC program website and would provide feedback in the next days.

Meanwhile, please subscribe d...@syncope.apache.org [1] and let's move
this discussion there.

GSoC 2017

2017-03-17 Thread Dhruv Sharma
Respected Sir/Madam,

I am a student presently pursuing my bachelors degree in Information
Technology from India and want to contribute in projects , in your
organisation for GSoC 2017.
I was interested to work on your project:
Supporting Image-to-Text (Image Captioning) in Tika for Image MIME Types
and personally feel that i meet the requirements and have a good experience
of programming in java and c.

This being my first time in GSoC could you please guide me about the
procedure to join Apache Software Foundation in order to contribute in your
projects.
I think it will be a great opportunity to work with Apache Software
Foundation.

Thanking You,
Dhruv Sharma

GSoC 2017

2017-03-12 Thread László Karsai
Hi there!
I am Laszlo Karsai from Hungary. I have experience in working with Java,
Android, bash, python, Javascript, C/C++. Besides these, I have also gained
experiences in some Apache products (ServiceMix, Karaf, Camel) in every day
use because in my workplace, I have developed a message distribution system
for more than one year (part-time job). In this system, we use ActiveMQ to
handle the message flow. I already started to get familiar with the Kafka
as well.

I would happily participate in GSoC 2017 in one of Apache reported
projects. One of them is really interesting for me which is:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OODT-946. I think I would be able to
handle it as I have relevant experience. However, I would like to show me
skills for you. I have already subscribed to the developer mailing list.
I hope it is not disturbing that I wrote to this email address but I
thought my question is not development related.

How can I show you my skills? What do you expect from potential participant
at this point of GSoC process?

Thank you for your answer in advance!

Best Regards,
Laszlo Karsai

GSoC 2017?

2017-01-23 Thread Ulrich Stärk
Time flies and I still haven't gotten around to conducting the survey on
GSoC. The application period for 2017 has already started and we need to
apply before Feb 9. I will conduct a quick gathering of opinions on
mentors@ but would like to also have opinions from the wider community.

Should we apply this year or do people have reservations (e.g. not
worthwhile our volunteer energy for the benefits gained)?

Cheers,

Uli
