Re: UX / UI: New Splash Screens & Icons
Sidney, I like the flat Cordova logo design as well, but I have to agree with points made by Jesse and Yohei. The flat Cordova logo is an excellent chance for us to distinguish the Mobile Spec and Hello World apps. I'm in favour of updating Mobile Spec to use the flat logo. The new flat designs should also be added to the Artwork section of the website, so that anyone can use it in a presentation or revise it later. However, that's where it should stop. We desperately need an open source designer and if you're interesting in helping, that would be awesome! The Cordova homepage, blog, and plugins repository could really use a designer's input and attention. However, I think the visual design should remain consistent and we should keep the original Cordova logo for the homepage and Hello World app. It's consistent and has no real problem aside from not jumping on the flat design bandwagon. Your time and talent can have a far greater impact elsewhere. Hi Jessie, actually the new versions are less in size, and of course all repo app assets will be replaced as well, that was the main reason for doing this. As of now, the blue one will replace the mobile-spec splash, and the light one the standard one. On 13 Mar 2014, at 00:56, Jesse wrote: > Not sure why we are doing this. RE: UX / UI: New Splash Screens & Icons
In an ideal world, I think every contribution whether it's a code or design should solve a problem or make an improvement upon something. I like the new flat design of the bot myself, but whether it's solving a problem or not will be subjective. I didn't exactly design the bot with the "skeuomorphic" trend in mind 2 years ago (nor was I trying to be trendy at all), but if it looks old and outdated, then perhaps this new look will be an improvement. I will also add that the real area I think we need UX/design contribution right now is improving the visual hierarchy on the home page. Many new sections have been added since it was originally designed and I think it could use some makeover. Not sure why we are doing this. The splash screen and icons are intended to be overwritten by the app developer. These are just placeholder, and personally I think they should look like they are intended to be thrown away, I think file-size is a bigger concern than polish. Also, if this effort continues, we will have a disconnect between the repo app assets and the look of http://cordova.apache.org/ Don't get me wrong, I definitely appreciate having a designer jump in and help out, however, some of this appears to be scratching designer itch ( if that's a thing ). Re: UX / UI: New Splash Screens & Icons
No problemo, seems fair. I will then remove the current version of the bot - i strongly prefer it over adding a third variant. Replacing the current skeuomorphic one (with the glare effects etc, not the outline logo) with the new, “flat” version shown on the splash screen demos. It would be a small facelift fitting the iOS7/Holo/Metro age. Thanks Sidney, You can check out the website using SVN using the instructions here: http://wiki.apache.org/cordova/UpdatingTheWebsite You don't have Apache Committer privileges yet (that's another topic) -- so your access is read-only for now -- but you can email us a patchfile and one of the committers can review and integrate it in. Idea: use one set to replace our default hello world, and another set to replace mobile-spec. I have a bunch of small sample apps on my phone, and can never locate mobile spec ;) On Tue, Mar 11, 2014 at 10:23 AM, Andrew Grieve wrote: > They look really good! hey those are sweet! I guess they could be contributed to our website [1] for others to incorporate, and again in the default example app that we generate [2] you'll need send apache a cla [3] and to follow the steps here [4] [1] http://cordova.io/artwork.html [2] https://github.com/apache/cordova-app-hello-world [3] https://www.apache.org/licenses/icla.txt [4] http://wiki.apache.org/cordova/ContributorWorkflow On Sun, Mar 9, 2014 at 3:26 AM, Sidney Bofah wrote: > Dear team, > > As this is my first post here, a short intro: I'm a project manager from a > Berlin-based, larger development company and a Hybrid/HTML5 evangelist. > > I'd like to contribute something here and as a first-off, i reworked > Cordovas' dated splash screen and icons and created 2 variants. UX / UI: New Splash Screens & Icons
Dear team, As this is my first post here, a short intro: I'm a project manager from a Berlin-based, larger development company and a Hybrid/HTML5 evangelist. I'd like to contribute something here and as a first-off, i reworked Cordovas' dated splash screen and icons and created 2 variants. I think the proposal fares well on all platforms. Splashscreen: https://i.cloudup.com/1PTrAENWqI.png Icon: https://i.cloudup.com/GZugN48eBF.png Of course, source PSDs with auto-export slices for all native sizes & platforms will be made available. Which one do you like more? Best Regards, Sidney --
