I have just contributed some additional code for the RFC 126
implementation (Service Registry Hooks) to FELIX-905, but there still
a few small things to finish on this so there's no reason to hold up
1.6.0 for this.
Release often = good :)

within the Karaf shell, something like:
  admin:create my_instance
  admin:list
  admin:start
etc

I need to be able to do some of these things from the OS command line
so I've started on external commands (e.g. admin-create.sh) that can
perform these tasks as well (they mostly use the same code as used by
the karaf shell).

I was wondering would the Felix/Karaf community be interested in
these? If so I'll start creating some Jiras and attach patches...

Best regards,

David Bosschaert

Re: Karaf admin commands in a command-line script

2009-09-01 Thread davidb
Ok, I've created a holder JIRA here:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FELIX-1547
I can't assign myself to it, but I'm working on it at the moment.

One quick question:
When I run a command standalone I see that it prints some funny
characters on my ordinary Windows console, probably caused by Ansi
code such as this (from AdminServiceImpl.java):
  println(Ansi.ansi().a("Creating new instance on port
").a(sshPort).a("
at:").a(Ansi.Attribute.INTENSITY_BOLD).a(serviceMixBase).a(Ansi.Attribute.RESET).toString());
Prints:
  Creating new instance on port 8106 at: ←[1mc:\somewhere...←[m
What do I need to set up so that this doesn't print out these '←[m'
strings? Normally when it's run within Felix it looks fine...

Thanks,

David

2009-09-02 Thread davidb
I put an initial patch on the bug:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FELIX-1547
Let me know if this is going in the right direction.
If so I'll continue with finishing it off.

[Karaf] How about a Karaf single-bundle distro?

2009-10-21 Thread davidb
Hi all,

I've been thinking about the Karaf bundles... Currently a minimal Karaf
runtime has 29 bundles.

[   0] [Active ] [] [0] System Bundle (2.0.0)
[   1] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell OSGi
Commands (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[   2] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell
PackageAdmin Commands (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[   3] [Active ] [] [   30] Apache MINA Core (2.0.0.M6)
[   4] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Management
(1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[   5] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Spring

[   6] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell
VariousCommands (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[   7] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Blueprint

[  10] [Active ] [] [   30] Apache Felix Gogo Shell Runtime

[  11] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: JAAS
Modules (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  12] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell SSH
(1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  13] [Active ] [] [   30] org.osgi.impl.bundle.jmx
(4.2.0.200907080519)
[  14] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell
Console(1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  15] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell
ConfigAdmin Commands (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  16] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell
Admin (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  17] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: JAAS
Config (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  18] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Shell Log
Commands (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  19] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Features
Management (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  20] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Features
Deployer (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  21] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Features
Command (1.1.0.SNAPSHOT)
[  22] [Active ] [] [   11] Apache Felix File Install
(2.0.1.SNAPSHOT)
[  23] [Active ] [] [   10] Apache Felix Prefrences Service
(1.0.2)
[  24] [Active ] [] [   10] Apache Felix Configuration Admin
Service (1.2.4)
[  25] [Active ] [] [8] OPS4J Pax Logging - API (1.4)
[  26] [Active ] [] [8] OPS4J Pax Logging - Service
(1.4)
[  27] [Active ] [] [5] OPS4J Pax Url - mvn: (1.1.2)
[  28] [Active ] [] [5] OPS4J Pax Url - wrap: (1.1.2)
[  29] [Active ] [Created ] [   20] Apache Geronimo Blueprint Bundle
(1.0.0)

Since you pretty much always need all 29 of these I was thinking it might
make sense to provide an alternate assembly (in addition to the current one)
that cuts down the number of bundles a little. For the CXF DOSGi project we
have always had two distros: a multi-bundle one and a single-bundle one. The
single-bundle distro has been very popular because of its ease of
installation. It's great for people just starting and for tutorials.

If we were to do something like this for Karaf we obviously have to choose:
do we put all bundles into a single distro, or do we leave certain
components out. I would personally perfer to have a single distro with
everything, so you could have a Karaf deployment like this:

[   0] [Active ] [] [0] System Bundle (2.0.0)
[   1] [Active ] [Created ] [   30] Apache Felix Karaf :: Single
Bundle Distro

If anyone needs to replace or use any of the embedded bundle separately,
they can always go back to the current Karaf distro.

Thoughts anyone? I'd be willing to help out creating this...

Best regards,

David

[Discuss] Develop OSGi Converter Service in Apache Felix?

2016-04-01 Thread davidb
Hi all,

In OSGi work is being done to define a Converter service. The current
working draft can be found here:
https://github.com/osgi/design/tree/master/rfcs/rfc0215

I have started prototyping an implementation of this in my personal github
project: https://github.com/coderthoughts/converter

However, it would obviously be nicer to do the implementation an a proper
opensource project, so I'm looking for a home work this work.
Apache Felix would be a good place IMHO as this will be another generally
useful OSGi component. Another place could be Apache Aries, but I was
initially thinking of Felix because this is not really an 'Enterprise'
component.

How would people feel if I would contribute my current very small codebase
with no dependencies to the Felix project and continue development here?

Best regards,

David Bosschaert

Thanks for the link! The OSGi specwork for RFC 215 is already based on a

them. I will put it on the list to look at.

[Discuss] Resolver 'latch' bundle / sub module

2016-11-10 Thread davidb
Hi all,

In some cases I have a requirement that a bundle should not resolve (or
start) when a certain external 'thing' hasn't taken place yet. For example
maybe you may not want to start a certain bundle until some operations have
been performed on a database.

Normally the only way you can prevent a bundle from resolving is if it has
some unresolved requirements. However, requirements and capabilities are
only attacheable to bundles and to add a requirement at runtime would
require adding a specific bundle that has that capability which could get a
bit messy - you may end up with a lot of capability-only bundles.

So I've been prototyping an alternative approach to this: a bundle with a
resolver hook. The bundle prevents bundles that are configured to be 'held
behind' from resolving until the latch has opened and they are allowed to
resolve.

In practice it worked like this. The implementation bundle looks for
bundles that are marked with a specific resolver latch capability:
  Provide-Capability =
aaa.bbb.ccc.resolverlatch;aaa.bbb.ccc.resolverlatch=foobar
The capability has a latch name too, in the above case that's 'foobar'.

The resolver latch bundle is configured (via configadmin) with a list of
latch names that it should initially prevent from resolving.
It also provides a service that can be called by an external entity - eg
the one that knows about the database in the above example - to release the
latch with a certain name... At that point the bundles with that latch name
capability can be started.

It's quite a small project altogether, and it might be useful by others
too. I'd like to contribute this to the Felix project as an independent
submodule.

Thoughts anyone?

Cheers,

David Bosschaert

Re: [Discuss] Resolver 'latch' bundle / sub module

2016-11-10 Thread davidb
Hi all,

I totally agree that using a services-based approach is more elegant here.

However in my use-case the bundles that should wait for the service may not
be developed with this condition in mind, so it's an extra condition that
should hold these bundles back. The bundles themselves could be written
using any technology, maybe with DS, maybe not (simple Bundle Activators).

Maybe my idea isn't so generally useful after all, as services based
solutions - if you can use them - are certainly better.

I guess I'll hold off contributing this. Thanks all for the feedback.

Cheers,

David

I'm not sure what happened, maybe the SSL cert was updated or something. I
also get this locally, but there I can simply accept this by responding.
Does anyone know how we can do this in the CMS given that there is no way
to anwer with 'R, t or p' to the question?

Thanks!

[VOTE] Release Felix Bundle Repository version 2.0.0

2014-06-19 Thread davidb
Hi,

I'm calling a vote on Felix Bundle Repository version 2.0.0.

It's been a long time since the OBR has been released, and since it
now also provides the OSGi Repository API 1.0 I think this warrants a
version of 2.0.0. Note that the exported packages are semantically
versioned.

Staging repository:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachefelix-1022/

You can use this UNIX script to download the release and verify the signatures:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/felix/trunk/check_staged_release.sh

Usage:
sh check_staged_release.sh 1022 /tmp/felix-staging

Changes:
New Feature:
* [FELIX-4368] - Support OSGi Repository 1.0 Specification
** [FELIX-4369] - Support repository.xml as defined by OSGi Repository spec
** [FELIX-4370] - Support Repository service as defined by OSGi spec
** [FELIX-4371] - Pass the Repository 1.0 OSGi CT
  -> The results of the OSGi Repository CT can be found here:

http://people.apache.org/~davidb/felix_obr_2.0.0/TEST-org.osgi.test.cases.repository-5.0.0.xml

Bug fixed:
* [FELIX-3257] - OBR resolver unable to pick up the highest bundle
version when selecting the best candidate
* [FELIX-2465] - system.bundle should be automatically wired to the
relevant bundle
* [FELIX-3842] - NPE in LocalRepositoryImpl

Please vote to approve this release:

[ ] +1 Approve the release
[ ] -1 Veto the release (please provide specific comments)

This vote will be open for at least 72 hours.

Thanks,

David Bosschaert

You are right. This is new, since the OSGi Repository APIs are now
included as substitutable exports.

[VOTE] Release Felix Bundle Repository version 2.0.2

2014-06-23 Thread davidb
Hi,

I'm calling a vote on Felix Bundle Repository version 2.0.2.

It's been a long time since the OBR has been released, and since it
now also provides the OSGi Repository API 1.0 I think this warrants a
version of 2.0.x. Note that the exported packages are semantically
versioned.
This release replaces failed release attempt for version 2.0.0 which
failed the vote because of omissions in the DEPENDENCIES and NOTICES
files. I have also added the sources using the maven-source-plugin to
this release.

Staging repository:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachefelix-1025/

You can use this UNIX script to download the release and verify the signatures:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/felix/trunk/check_staged_release.sh

Usage:
sh check_staged_release.sh 1025 /tmp/felix-staging

Changes:
New Feature:
* [FELIX-4368] - Support OSGi Repository 1.0 Specification

Bug fixed:
* [FELIX-3257] - OBR resolver unable to pick up the highest bundle
version when selecting the best candidate
* [FELIX-2465] - system.bundle should be automatically wired to the
relevant bundle
* [FELIX-3842] - NPE in LocalRepositoryImpl

Please vote to approve this release:

[ ] +1 Approve the release
[ ] -1 Veto the release (please provide specific comments)

This vote will be open for at least 72 hours.

Thanks,

David Bosschaert

[VOTE] Release Apache Felix Gogo Shell 0.12.0 and Command 0.16.0

2015-10-01 Thread davidb
Hi all,

I'm calling a vote on the following bundles:

Felix Gogo Shell 0.12.0
** Improvement
* FELIX-5021 [GOGO] Use system bundle to find bundles
* FELIX-4529 [Gogo] Let gosh be configured by files contributed by
a bundle fragment
* FELIX-3341 Simple csh-like Command History
* FELIX-3340 Allow the prompt to be a Function

** Bug
* FELIX-4425 Short command in Gogo Shell not working with Java 8
* FELIX-3706 gogo shell startup failure in busy system
* FELIX-3703 Race condition in gogo runtime activator

Felix Gogo Command 0.16.0
** Improvement
* FELIX-5021 [GOGO] Use system bundle to find bundles
* FELIX-5009 Relative URIs would be nice for install and update
* FELIX-5008 gogo usage messages could be less confusing
* FELIX-3499 felix:cd command works only with relative paths

** Bug
* FELIX-4969 cd refuses to leave initial directory

Note that not changes have been made to the Felix Gogo Runtime bundle
since the last release.

Staging repository:
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachefelix-1096

You can use this UNIX script to download the release and verify the signatures:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/felix/trunk/check_staged_release.sh

Usage:
sh check_staged_release.sh 1096 /tmp/felix-gogo-check

Please vote to approve this release:

[ ] +1 Approve the release
[ ] -1 Veto the release (please provide specific comments)

This vote will remain open for at least 72 hours.

2015-10-01 Thread davidb
Hi David,

I didn't change the build process for these artifacts, so I guess they
were released like this before. In any case, the important artifacts
are there. We can change the produced artifacts for a future release,
but I don't think this is important enough to cancel this one.

BTW I can't count your email as a +1 or -1, so please indicate how you
actually vote here.

Thanks,

David
