Re: Moving the Sling Management Console to Apache Felix

2008-05-16 Thread Felix Meschberger
[Crossposting to Sling and Felix]

Hi all,

After some distraction and the waiting periods for votes and IP
Clearance, I now have moved the console over to the Apache Felix project
as

org.apache.felix
org.apache.felix.webconsole
1.0.0-SNAPSHOT

The source is located at [1] and I also have deployed a first SNAPSHOT
build to the Apache Snapshot Repository.

To get the thing running, you mainly need an OSGi HttpService
implementation active (like the Felix http.service or the OPS4J Pax Web
Service) and install the web console as a bundle.

By default the console is accessible at the URL path "/system/console"
and requires user id and password (both being "admin" by default). All
settings are configurable through the Configuration Admin Service with
PID org.apache.felix.webconsole.internal.servlet.OsgiManager.

Have fun !

Regards
Felix

The easiest (but somewhat heavy with 19MB) possibility is to download

[VOTE] Moving the Sling Management Console to Apache Felix

2008-05-07 Thread Felix Meschberger
Hi all,

After an initial round of discussion and letting it almost be forgotten,
we should finally start to get this moving again.

As noted in [1] the incubating Apache Sling project has a module - a
single bundle - which provides a Web Based Management Console. The base
bundle allows mainly for OSGi management such as bundle lifecycle
management, configuration, etc. But the console is in fact extensible
and more functionality may easily be plugged into it.

Members of the Felix and Sling community met at ApacheCon in Amsterdam
and and came to the conclusion, that the Apache Felix project would be
the natural location for such a management console. Mainly because
people looking for OSGi stuff would turn to Felix and not primarily to
Sling.

There is no release yet of the Sling Management Console and there are a
number of open issues [2], which should be fixed/implemented before a
first release of the console. Nevertheless the console is already usable
in its current state and therefore, I think we may just move it as is
and finish it in Apache Felix.

So here is the vote. As always, it will be open for 72 hours and only
votes of Felix PMC members are binding (though anybody is cordially
invited to vote):

[+1] Yes, move the Management Console to Apache Felix

I quickly talked to Aaron about this issue. He said, that it should
probably not be an issue to move this code but he would confirm with
Noel of the IPMC and come back to me.

Point is, if we can show to the IPMC that both communities are

not be a problem to the IPMC.

You're probably right - I would indicate in the vote request that most
of the console code has been contributed by Felix Meschberger, and
some of it by you and me, mentioning that we're all experienced
committers.

That should make it easier for people to accept the move, even though

Great,

so I guess the final thing we have to do is to vote in both projects if
each project agrees to moving the stuff. Not sure, but as Sling is in
the Incubator we might need a vote from the Incubator PMC - otherwise we
would bypass the incubator process :)

Yes, I think that this is a great idea after seeing the console in
action yesterday evening at the BOF.

Greetings, Marcel

And me! +1 to that.

Moving the Sling Management Console to Apache Felix

2008-04-10 Thread Felix Meschberger
[Crossposting to Sling and Felix]

Hi all,

In the Apache Sling project we have a nice little web based management
console for OSGi framework. This console currently has the following
features:

   * Manage Bundles: list, install, start, stop, uninstall, refresh
packages
   * Managed DS Components: list, enable, disable (requires Apache Felix
SCR)
   * Configuration Admin: Simple GUI to edit configuration
   * Configuration Status: List installed bundles, framework/system
properties,
active services, available DS components, show
configurations
   * OBR: List contents, install from OBR
   * System Information: Setting system startlevel, set default bundle
start level,
general VM information

This console is not really related to the Sling project and may be of
use to about any OSGi based application to easily manage the framework
instance. As such we (Richard Hall, Marcel Offermans, Karl Pauls,
Carsten Ziegeler and me) discussed that it might be a good idea to move
this console to the Apache Felix project. In fact, people interested in
such a console would certainly go to Apache Felix and not to Apache
Sling in search for such a console.

I would like to hear the oppinions of the two communities with respect
to moving the current "Sling Management Console" to Apache Felix.
Thanks.

Felix
