OK, looks like you get most of the bits then the connection drops.

You can try using Ant to install. Download a binary kit, unzip it, run
ant -f installer.xml

I’m trying to see if there is a better answer.

Re: New installer failures

2015-07-07 Thread Nicholas Kwiatkowski
The reason why the player's URLLoader works OK with a proxy is that it
relies on Flash's engine, which relies on the browser's engine to do these
things. The browser will ultimately take direction from the OS if there is
a proxy in play or not and route traffic correctly in that case. We would
have to do this by hand, which is not impossible, but not a quick fix. The
other issue is that a proper proxy would proxy the SSL/TLS requests. By
all right they would issue their own certificate with the proxy listed as a
common name on the certificate presented and use a locally generated, but
trusted certificate. Again, we could do this, but it requires a large
amount of work to reinvent what we pretty much already have.

The whole point of this exercise was to get around people's own
misconfigurations -- namely still allowing really old encryption that some
servers didn't support by default. If the number of failures is great
enough, we can implement it, but I doubt it is. Adding a separate config
screen to support proxies is doable, and then we are in proxy mode we would
just accept all certificates would be the easiest option if we do want to
move on it.

Re: New installer failures

2015-07-07 Thread Alex Harui
Yes, the goal was to reduce overall failure rates. We haven’t pushed the
change that auto-updates everyone using older Installers so our current
failure rate doesn’t truly tell us whether we have more people failing
from bad configurations or from being behind proxies. I suppose we could
push that change and watch the numbers over the next several days. What
do folks think?

Meanwhile, Justin says GA is saying there is an unspecified “Error” in the
analytics. Our code in theory doesn’t send just “Error” to the analytics
but our code will include a “\n” when there is a failure with a stack
trace. I was hoping someone with a GA account could tell us whether the
“\n” is throwing off the analytics. We should probably get a new
measurement of the failure rate. Is it possible to get a unique sorted
list of all results from the past several days (duplicates removed)?

Would folks know what proxy information to enter? Would accepting all
certs be sufficiently secure given that those folks’ IT department has
already taken the step to use a proxy?

Is there a way for us to detect that there is a proxy? IIRC, on Windows,
each browser can have its own proxy and other configuration info but Flash
uses IE somehow which can be misconfigured. What is the deal on Mac? Can
each browser have its own config?

IOW, I think we can assume that on every computer exists one valid browser
config. I figure everyone has a working browser, but it might not be the
one that Flash chooses to rely on. Maybe the right answer is to have a
way to fail-over to try both the player’s mechanism and the new
as3httpclient and then tell folks that we are sure that Flash/AIR isn’t
configured correctly and not log a failure, just like we are detecting
that you can’t write to the destination directly and exiting without
logging a failure (or at least I hope that’s how our code is working).
Can we tell if Flash is relying on a misconfigured IE setting?

Thoughts?

The DER stream.null will happen when the SSL session can't be verified.
The only way that could happen is if there was a man in the middle or if
the server they were connecting to was unable to use modern security (for

2015-07-02 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

Can I assume we’ve never seen this error before?

There been a few instances of the same string, but given it’s generic nature
it’s hard to tell if it’s the same error or not.

For example:
https://www.google.com/analytics/web/?hl=en#report/content-pages/a37926454w66427073p68310079/%3F_u.date00%3D20150201%26_u.date01%3D20150702%26explorer-table.plotKeys%3D%5B%5D%26_r.drilldown%3Danalytics.pagePath%3A%2Ftrack-installer.html%3Ffailure%3Dtrue%2526label%3DApache%20Flex%20SDK%204.14.0%2526version%3D4.14.0%2526os%3Dwindows%2526info%3DError/

 Flex SDK 4.14.0%26version=4.14.0%26os=windows%26info=Error/

It occurs for FlexJS as well:

 FlexJS Nightly%26version=0.0.3%26os=mac%26info=Error/

There is a spike in the numbers of this error in the last few days so I think
we can assume it’s the new installer.

Is there a way to find out if a failure is from an IP address that later
 gets a success?

Not easily. We can’t tell if the same address gets repeated failures :-(

Did any other errors go away?

Not all of them no, but the windows directory issue is certainly less than
before but not gone, but I assume that this is because not every one is using
the new installer yet. Overall error rate is slightly higher.

A third place is in the uncaught error handler, but it would require
someone throwing an Error with the error string “Error” and the stack
 trace not being invisible.

Running on older AIR versions perhaps??? Another thing we could possible log.

So it is a bit puzzling how we can be getting this sort of failure report.
Folks, if you experience an installer failure, please post the log
somewhere and send us a link.

Probably the only we we’ll find out more. From previous experience it take
about 100 errors to get someone to speak up.

Thanks,
Justin

Most likely. Although there is a chance that there is a spike in the
conditions that produce this situation. Again, in my snooping through the
SWF, I don’t really see how we could ever see just “Error”. How does GA
handle spaces and newlines (\n) in the URL? It looks like we pass it to
mx:HTML which I assume encodes it? Do other tracking URLs show spaces and
newlines (\n)?

In looking at the logs, is this the first release with the new logic that
test write-access to the temp directory? What does the tracker report, if
anything, once we now tell the user that they don’t have write access?
Could we be trading the old windows directory error message for this one?

Maybe, but I thought we were using captive runtime. Although I do see
upgrade AIR messages when I run the installer. Maybe someone can make
sure we are building the Installer correctly.

None that I can find so I assume they are not handled. e.g. we also get a
couple of Error#3003” and Error#3004”.

In looking at the logs, is this the first release with the new logic that
test write-access to the temp directory?

Yes.

What does the tracker report, if anything, once we now tell the user that they
don’t have write access?

Nothing. We only track at the end when an error occurs or it successfully
installed something.

Could we be trading the old windows directory error message for this one?

The country distribution is different (far less en_US locales) so from that I
would guess that it’s a different error / combination of errors.

Thanks,
Justin

2015-07-01 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

It’s looking more likely we have a new introduced issue.

If you have access to google analytics this shows it quite clearly:
https://www.google.com/analytics/web/?hl=en#report/content-pages/a37926454w66427073p68310079/%3F_u.date00%3D20150601%26_u.date01%3D20150630%26explorer-table.plotKeys%3D%5B%5D%26_r.drilldown%3Danalytics.pagePath%3A%2Ftrack-installer.html%3Ffailure%3Dtrue%2526label%3DApache%20Flex%20SDK%204.14.1%2526version%3D4.14.1%2526os%3Dwindows%2526info%3DError%26explorer-graphOptions.selected%3Danalytics.nthDay/

Sadly the error tracking URL gives us little to go on:
/track-installer.html?failure=truelabel=Apache Flex SDK
4.14.1version=4.14.1os=windowsinfo=Error

We’ve had 50 of these in the past 3 days and 0 in the past month. Most errors
occur in non en_US locales (47 out of the 50) which may be an indication to
where the issue may lie.

This error is occurring at a higher rate than the Unable to create temporary
directory” windows error was previously.

New installer failures

Hi,

While I’ve not got enough sats to see what is going on it seems that while it
looks like the error rate has been reduced (yay!) are still getting some errors
with the installer.

Looks like we getting a lot more windows “Error” errors, in the order of about
20 a day. So far the error only occurs in non en_US locales.

We are also getting this error which I not seen before couldn't parse DER
stream.null” which may be worth keeping an eye on.

OK, but the success rate on Windows is “acceptable”? If so, are we ready
to hit the switch to get the auto-update to kick in?

It's hard to tell from the data what % of errors are from the new installer and
what are from the old. In the case of those 2 errors it seems reasonable to
assume that because they only occur in the last 2 days and have zero
occurrences in the week before they are most likely related to the new
installer.

Re what’s acceptable as long as it’s less than before seems reasonable to me,
and I don’t think we can do that without turning on the auto update and seeing
what happens and waiting a few days. Might me a nice idea to put the installer
version number in the error string at some point.

Thanks,
Justin
