[jira] [Created] (HBASE-8135) Mutation should implement HeapSize

2013-03-18 Thread nkeywal (JIRA)
nkeywal created HBASE-8135:
--

 Summary: Mutation should implement HeapSize
 Key: HBASE-8135
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-8135
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Client
Affects Versions: 0.94.5, 0.95.0, 0.96.0
Reporter: nkeywal
Assignee: nkeywal
Priority: Minor
 Fix For: 0.95.0, 0.96.0
 Attachments: 8135.v1.patch

Code is there already.
Doing so would allow to share some code when doing client side buffering.
patch compiles locally, should not impact tests, but not tested locally.

HBASE-8014: Backport HBASE-6915 to 0.94

2013-03-18 Thread Jean-Marc Spaggiari
This is a very simple patch to get 0.94.x tests working with JDK 1.7.
Can any commiter have a quick look at it?

Thanks,

JM

I am running test suite.

Will integrate if test suite passes on jdk 1.6 and Lars gives green light.

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-8136) coprocessor service requires .meta. to be available all the time.

2013-03-18 Thread nkeywal (JIRA)
nkeywal created HBASE-8136:
--

Summary: coprocessor service requires .meta. to be available all
the time.
 Key: HBASE-8136
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-8136
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: Client, Coprocessors
Affects Versions: 0.96.0
Reporter: nkeywal
Priority: Minor

HTable#getRegionLocations does not use a cache: all the calls to this function
go to .META.

So:
- we're missing an opportunity to reuse/update the location cache in the
HConnection.
- this method is called by the coprocessor service. So, for people using this
features, they have .meta. on their execution path, and it's not good for
performances, scalability and reliability.

I'm not totally clear on the fix. I think it should be possible to use the
cache to see if we have all regions for the table. But it means we won't always
have the last version when calling getRegionLocations.

Any thought on this?

  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: Region Assignment
Reporter: Jimmy Xiang
Assignee: Jimmy Xiang
Priority: Minor
 Fix For: 0.95.0

Since we are going to remove assignment timeout monitor, we should add some
state to show if a region failed to open/close after max retries.

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-8138) Using [packed=true] for repeated field of primitive numeric types (types which use the varint, 32-bit, or 64-bit wire types)

2013-03-18 Thread Jeffrey Zhong (JIRA)

Summary: Using [packed=true] for repeated field of primitive
numeric types (types which use the varint, 32-bit, or 64-bit wire types)
 Key: HBASE-8138
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-8138
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
Reporter: Jeffrey Zhong
Assignee: Jeffrey Zhong
Priority: Trivial
 Fix For: 0.98.0

It's recommended to do the following for numeric primitive types
{quote}
For historical reasons, repeated fields of basic numeric types aren't encoded
as efficiently as they could be. New code should use the special option
[packed=true] to get a more efficient encoding

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-8140) TableMapReduceUtils#addDependencyJar fails when nested inside another MR job

2013-03-18 Thread Nick Dimiduk (JIRA)

 Summary: TableMapReduceUtils#addDependencyJar fails when nested

 Key: HBASE-8140
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-8140
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: mapreduce
Reporter: Nick Dimiduk
Assignee: Nick Dimiduk

TableMapReduceUtils#addDependencyJar is used when configuring a mapreduce job
to make sure dependencies of the job are shipped to the cluster. The code
depends on finding an actual jar file containing the necessary classes. This is
not always the case, for instance, when run at the end of another mapreduce
job. In that case, dependency jars have already been shipped to the cluster and
expanded in the parent job's run folder. Those dependencies are there, just not
available as jars.

The maven-antrun-plugin execution doesn't have a default mapping in
m2eclipse, so if you import the project into eclipse, you will get an error
that the mapping is undefined. All that's needed is to define an execution
via the org.eclipse.m2 lifecycle-mapping plugin - it doesn't actually affect
the usual maven build at all.

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-8143) HBase on Hadoop 2 with local hort circuit reads (ssr) causes OOM

2013-03-18 Thread Enis Soztutar (JIRA)
Enis Soztutar created HBASE-8143:

Summary: HBase on Hadoop 2 with local hort circuit reads (ssr)
causes OOM
 Key: HBASE-8143
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-8143
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: hadoop2
Affects Versions: 0.95.0, 0.98.0, 0.94.7
Reporter: Enis Soztutar
Assignee: Enis Soztutar
 Fix For: 0.95.0, 0.98.0, 0.94.7

We've run into an issue with HBase 0.94 on Hadoop2, with SSR turned on that the
memory usage of the HBase process grows to 7g, on an -Xmx3g, after some time,
this causes OOM for the RSs.

Upon further investigation, I've found out that we end up with 200 regions,
each having 3-4 store files open. Under hadoop2 SSR, BlockReaderLocal allocates
DirectBuffers, which is unlike HDFS 1 where there is no direct buffer
allocation.

It seems that there is no guards against the memory used by local buffers in
hdfs 2, and having a large number of open files causes multiple GB of memory to
be consumed from the RS process.

This issue is to further investigate what is going on. Whether we can limit the
memory usage in HDFS, or HBase, and/or document the setup.

Possible mitigation scenarios are:
 - Turn off SSR for Hadoop 2
 - Ensure that there is enough unallocated memory for the RS based on expected
# of store files
 - Ensure that there is lower number of regions per region server (hence number
of open files)
