We also experienced the same issue today. The affected node terminated after 5
minutes when it run short of file descriptors.

Are there debian packages for 0.10.1.1? http://packages.confluent.io/deb/3.1
currently has 0.10.1.0.

Your stack trace alone doesn't indicate that you have hit this bug. You should
also see an increased number of file descriptors on the leader, and all of it
should be fixed after a bounce of the leader. Do you see that?

Given that we had at least 4 reports of this issue for 0.10.1 and all were
resolved in 0.10.1.1 and later, I doubt you are hitting the same bug.

Hi Apurva, I shall send you the stack trace again but the behavior is exactly
same - we see this behavior almost every week. I haven't observed file
descriptor during the issue.

And it also gets resolved after restarts of nodes. We even observed missing
offsets in Consumer at the time of issue.

We restarted it 2-3 days ago, I shall take thread dumps, observe file
descriptor count and let you know today.

Regards,
Arpan Khagram

Hi all,
We have a 3-node cluster on our production environment. We recenctly upgraded
kafka from 0.9.0.1 to 0.10.1.0 and we are seeing a similar issue of
intermittent disconnection. We never had this issue in 0.9.0.1.

Is this issue fixed in later versions? I am asking this because I saw a similar
thread for version 10.2:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-5153

Please assist.

Michael Andre Pearce (IG) commented on KAFKA-4477:
--

What we see as per the logs is that the node that goes ill first reduces its
ISR's then we see disconnects from everywhere else. It does seem similar, but
we never see it re-expand the ISR's unlike the log files they've submitted.

We have had the issue in 3 environments, 5 times in the last week and a half.
We are trying to push through automated stack trace gathering. We unfortunately
don't use our APM tools to auto instrument on Kafka (note one reason for KIP-82)

Ive attached the stack trace that was captured before the node was restarted by

deadlocks, unlike the JIRA ticket you mentioned.

An additional comment - after we restart the node with this issue, there are a
large number of Unclean Leader Elections (presumably all topic-partitions that
the bad node was the leader of) and so we may lose a bit of data.

It would help if:

# we could have more stack traces
# the associated server, controller, and state change log for the period around
which this issue occurred.

Thanks,

It may also be helpful to grab the associated zookeeper logs. If the bad server
is losing contact with zookeeper at the same time that it loses connection with

James Cheng commented on KAFKA-4477:

Does the broker respond to metadata requests (kafkacat -L)?
You said that for the topics the broker owns, that the ISRs shrink down to just
itself. Does the broker exist in the ISR for topics that are owned by other
brokers?

If you see the broker disconnect and then reconnect from zookeeper very
quickly, I'm wondering if this might be an instance of KAFKA-1120, which might
be the same as KAFKA-4443. When I've encountered those bugs, what I've seen is

Also, could you share the values of the following metrics
`kafka.server:type=KafkaRequestHandlerPool,name=RequestHandlerAvgIdlePercent`
and `kafka.network:type=SocketServer,name=NetworkProcessorAvgIdlePercent` ?

If connections are being closed because the broker is slowing up, these metrics
should show the pressure on the request handling thread pools.

Nothing interesting there in our case.

Looked at 30 minutes before and after the incident. Within that timeframe the
worst numbers reported are (3 Node Cluster, the lowest reported value):

- NetworkProcessorAvgIdlePercent 0.96
- RequestHandlerAvgIdlePercent 0.74

File limit is set to {{Max open files1048576 1048576

Though the instances that encountered this saw its open files start steadily
increasing. It seemed that it would keep increasing had I not restarted the
process.

[~tdevoe], thanks for sharing the log.

On node 1001 and 1003, the symptom was that in a short window, there were a
bunch of shrinking ISR entries like the following and there were no ISR
expansion after that. Also, all ISRs were reduced from 3 replicas to 2 replicas
and replica 1002 seems to be the only one removed from all partitions. So, this
is not quite the same as described in the original jira.
Shrinking ISR for partition [topic_0_post,1] from 1003,1001,1002 to 1003,1001
(short window)

On node 1002, the symptom was that there was constant ISR shrinking and
expansion, which is also different from the original jira.

One thing that's worth checking is that if there is any GC induced ZK session
expiration in the broker, especially broker 1002.

[~michael.andre.pearce], the issue that you reported is a bit weird, but I am
not sure if other people have seen the exact issue that you reported as I
mentioned above. One thing that could lead to the symptom that you described is
if the leader broker is somehow slow in processing the incoming requests. This
will cause the follower and client requests to timeout and then be retried on
new sockets. The old connections will show up as closed_wait since they can't
be closed by the leader broker quick enough. However, the stacktrace you
attached shows that both the request handler threads and the network threads
are idle. Was the stacktrace taking at the right time? Could you also check f
there is any GC induced ZK session expiration in the broker?

Tom DeVoe commented on KAFKA-4477:
--

[~junrao] I respectfully disagree, and this is why I originally was hesitant to
post the extended logs - the shrinking ISR from 1003, 1001, 1002 happened after
I restarted node 1002 (as is expected).

If we pay attention to the timestamps, the symptoms described in the ticket
*exactly* match what I have seen.

- In the node 1002 log, we see all ISRs reduced to itself at {{2016-11-28
19:57:05}}.

- Approximately 10 seconds later at {{2016-11-28 19:57:16,003}} (as in the
original issue description) the other two nodes (1001, 1003) both log
{{java.io.IOException: Connection to 1002 was disconnected before the response
was read}}.

- After this occurs, we also see an increasing amount of file descriptors
opening on node 1002.

Checking the zookeeper logs does not indicate *any* sessions expired at the
time this issue occurred.

Hi Jun,

The stack was taken by the automated restart script we've had to put in place
before it restarted the nodes, which picked up the issue 20 seconds after it
started.

The broker during the period is not under high load. We do not see any GC
issues, nor do we see any ZK issues.

The logs we are seeing are matching those of other people, we have had this
occur 3 times further all having very similar logs aka nothing new is showing
up.

On a side note, we are looking to upgrade to 0.10.1.1 as soon as its released
and we see it released by Confluent also. We do this as we expect some further
sanity checks have occurred and use this as a measure to check no critical
issues,

We will aim to push to UAT quickly (where we see this issue also (weirdly we
haven't had this occur in TEST or DEV)) to see if this is resolved. What is the
expected timeline for this? We still expecting it to be released today? And
when would Confluent likely to complete their testing and release.

Cheers
Mike

It is worth noting we see the open file descriptors if we leave the process in

[~michael.andre.pearce], the 0.10.1.1 release will need RC1 since we need to
fix another critical bug.

Note that the cause of the leader dropping all followers out of ISR is
potentially different from dropping just 1 follower. For your issue, it would
be useful to also look at the controller/state-change log around that time to
see if the followers have received any LeaderAndIsrRequests.

Do you know the FollowerFetch request latency (reported by jmx) on the leader

Lorand Peter Kasler commented on KAFKA-4477:

We had encountered the same situation (even having this constantly growing file
handle usage mentioned earlier) and the Follower nodes were trying continuously
to connect (returning the same error every time that has been posted).
Also the (possibly deadlocked) leader node refused to export any metrics, but
before the incident the request latency wasn't at it's peak and it wasn't the
highest in the cluster.

Apurva Mehta commented on KAFKA-4477:
-

[~tdevoe], thanks for sharing all your extend broker logs, as well as the
controller and state change logs.

I have a few questions:

# The original description in the ticket stats that the problem node reduces
the ISR to itself, and then doesn't recover. In the logs you shared, the
problem node 1002 does shrink its ISRs to itself, but then the ISR begins to
expand back to the original set only 2 seconds after. The broker log for node
1002 also shows connections from the other replicas coming in. We can tell
since the SASL handshake is being logged. the strange bit is that nodes 1001
and nodes 1003, however, can't seem to connect until 2130, which brings me to
my next point.
# Did you bounce the hosts at 2130? If not, when were the hosts bounced?
# We have fixed some deadlock bugs where the ISR shrinks to a single node but
expands back again. Given the observation in point 1, it maybe worth trying the
0.10.1.1 RC to see if you can reproduce this problem when using that code. If
it reproduces, then we know for certain that the existing deadlocks are not the
issue.
# Another suspicion we have is the changes to the `NetworkClientBlockingOps`
code. However, this code does not have any logging. If you try the RC, and
still hit the issue, would you be willing to deploy a version of 0.10.1 with
some instrumentation around the network client code. This would enable us to
validate or disprove our hypothesis.

Thanks,
Apurva

Hi Apurva,

Whilst i await the issue to occur again to provide some further logs for you.

Just reading the above comment, and a query on this.

Whilst obviously theres by the sounds of it a possible deadlock causing the ISR
not to re-expand (though some stacks we have captured don't show this). The
question in the first place is why even are the ISR's shrinking in the first
place?

Re 0.10.1.1 RC unfortunately in the environments we see it in, we will only be
able to deploy it once 0.10.1.1 is GA/Tagged as they're UAT and PROD
environments.

On a note it seems 0.10.0.0 doesn't seem according to others to contain this
issue (we can only confirm 0.9.0.1 doesnt), is there any possible way to
downgrade from 0.10.1.0 to 0.10.0.0 , is there a doc for this? Obviously all
docs are for upgrade paths not downgrade.

Cheers
Mike

Regarding 2 - I restarted the host which shrank all of it's ISRs at 21:30.
Regarding 3/4 - We will definitely be willing to try 0.10.1.1 when it is
released, however we don't have an environment that we would be willing to test
the patched version.

Hi [~tdevoe] (and other as well),

Would it be possible to enable trace logging for kafka requsets in your
production cluster?

To do this you would have to set `log4j.logger.kafka.request.logger=TRACE,
requestAppender` in you log4j.properties file.

This would enable us to get the information of when the brokers sent responses
to particular requests. From the data you have shared, it appears that the
broker 1002 process the fetch requests from replicas part way, and then somehow
it gets lost. With the trace logging, we would be able to isolate the problem
to either the server or the client, and then redouble our focus.

If you do enable trace logging for requests, then the output will be in the
`kafka-request.log` file in your regular log directory.

Thanks,
Apurva

One clarification: if you use the `log4j.properties` file that is shipped with

log4j.logger.kafka.request.logger=WARN, requestAppender

Hi [~junrao]

We had similar issue this morning, this time though we DO see deadlock.

I've attached all the logs, and stack we gathered from all the process's. logs
are in csv original log line is in column _raw in the csv.

Ive also attached screenshots of our monitoring graphs of the follower stats,
we do see a spike, but this seems to be post restart of the process (i think we
should expect that?)

All are in 2016_15_12.zip.

Cheers

[~michael.andre.pearce], the deadlock seems to be the same as in KAFKA-3994,
which will be fixed in 0.10.1.1. We will try rolling 0.10.1.1 RC1 today.

[jira] [Commented] (KAFKA-4477) Node reduces its ISR to itself, and doesn't recover. Other nodes do not take leadership, cluster remains sick until node is restarted.

Niles Hiray commented on KAFKA-4477:

[~ijuma] working fine for us since 27 Dec. Before that it broke thrice in three
weeks.

> We have encountered a critical issue that has re-occured in different
> physical environments. We haven't worked out what is going on. We do though
> have a nasty work around to keep service alive.
> We do have not had this issue on clusters still running 0.9.01.
> We have noticed a node randomly shrinking for the partitions it owns the
> ISR's down to itself, moments later we see other nodes having disconnects,
> followed by finally app issues, where producing to these partitions is
> blocked.
> It seems only by restarting the kafka instance java process resolves the
> issues.
> We have had this occur multiple times and from all network and machine
> monitoring the machine never left the network, or had any other glitches.
> Below are seen logs from the issue.
