2007-01-16 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Dear Translators/Localizers,

this is to inform you that in the UI we have a few strings that need to
be translated for the OOo 2.2 release. If you are working on translation
to provide on Thursday for 2.2, please make sure to provide translation
for the strings in the following project:

svxsource\dialog\numpages.src

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

Dear Translators/Localizers,

I would like to give you a headsup for the upcoming 2.2 update release.

Translation deadline for 2.2 is January 18th, 2007

Note that January 18th is also the bug fixing deadline for all
language relevant issues. After this deadline only critical bugs will
be fixed.

Release Map with translation deadlines specific for the 2.2 release
can be found at:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease22

The Sun/Globalization team (in a few cases in collaboration with some
N-L communities) will be working on the below languages:
French, Italian, German, Swedish, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese,
Dutch, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Korean, Japanese,
Hungarian, Polish
However, if you wish to contribute to the translation work for the
above listed languages just drop me an email specifying the volume you
could translate (500, 1000, 2000 words) from January 4th to
January 18th. Please let me know by January 2nd if you wish to
contribute to one of the above languages so that I can make the
necessary arrangements.

Hope this information is useful for you to schedule your work.

Kind Regards,
Rafaella

Hi Rafaella,

did you communicate this to Natalie?

I leave the rest of the mail intact to be sure about this. BTW I don't
think any of us has cvs-access. So maybe you can attach the strings to
be translated to the existing issue 73150?

It is explained in last comment of

Please file an issue about missing language, as this languages list
will be the main one in future.

Do you have any idea where strings from scp2\source\ooo.po are used? How
does missing language impact on our 2.2 build? Can I expect that
Slovenian language will be added for 2.2 release?
Thanks

I think at moment these strings are used only in newly designed extensions
dialog, another set of similar strings is used in Windows installer.

The corresponding issue is 72160. Currently two descriptions are the
same in English while the bullets are different. You may want to check
the actual dialog (Format - Bullets and numbering) to figure out what
describes the best these bullets in your language.

Hmm, CWS os91 is back in "New" so these strings still may change. And
they will change.

[l10n-dev] followup to issue 73501

2007-01-16 Thread Ain Vagula

I'll bring this conversation out of IZ.

Clytie wrote:
I also query the utility of this type of string:
\\Icon\\
main0227.xhp#par_id3153838.help.text
There are a LOT of them, and each time, the only translatable text is
"icon". What utility do these strings
have? Is it worth our time to translate this same text, over and over?

Timar wrote:
clytie,
This is not a problem of the format but the problem of the tool you use. There
are tools which can be programmed to parse this format and handle tags correctly
(as non-translatable placeables). These tools can also ignore the changes in
markup, therefore you will have much less work during updates. Sometimes only
the name of icon changes, sometimes inch is converted to cm in dimensions or
vice versa. You are not obliged to use free po editors. I think there are better
solutions which are not free but I value my time more than a few hundred Euros.

Clytie wrote:
timar: I work in a lot of other free-software projects, and haven't
encountered this problem before. For one thing, they all work on the
unique-string principle, so you don't have to translate the same text
over and over, and secondly, my PO editors handle all those projects'
files effectively. So I am inclined to see this as an OpenOffice.org
issue.

My comment:
Timar didnt mean that po-editors itself do something wrong (although
gettext itself can always surprise when merging), but there is some
functinality missing. Eg. in some editors you can maybe define, that
'this is a tag and must be copied like it is when changed without
making string fuzzy'. From helpcontent fixes 90% (or more) are tag
fixes, which is really PITA for translator - to find out character by
character where is the change.
Another pain for many languages is so called unique string principe
you count as benefit. Simple words, like format, group, start, etc.
have in original language one shape, are they nomens or verbs... In
target language we have to separate many such strings, as eg. 'format'
has in my language at least 5 different meanings. Now we use in
po-translation kde-style comments, that makes some additional work for
translators but can ensure at least reasonable quality.
