[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-11946) Move bin/solr arg-parsing logic to Java

Jason Gerlowski commented on SOLR-11946:

Attached is a patch that shows what this would look like on Linux. The
attached patch moves most arg-parsing logic to Java land, with some caveats:
- Haven't touched the "auth" tool yet. That tool is a little more complicated
and I needed a bit more time on it.
- The help text is currently generated from the commons-cli {{Option}} and
{{CommandLine}} classes. It doesn't look much like the current help text. If
this is something we want to preserve as close as possible, this will require a
bit more work (but is totally do-able).
- No changes included for the Windows ({{bin/solr.cmd}}) script.

Would love any feedback or suggestions anyone has. Otherwise, I plan to revise
this patch and add Windows support in the coming days.

[jira] [Created] (SOLR-11946) Move bin/solr arg-parsing logic to Java

2018-02-04 Thread Jason Gerlowski (JIRA)
Jason Gerlowski created SOLR-11946:
--

Summary: Move bin/solr arg-parsing logic to Java
 Key: SOLR-11946
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-11946
 Project: Solr
  Issue Type: Improvement
Security Level: Public (Default Security Level. Issues are Public)
  Components: scripts and tools
Affects Versions: master (8.0)
Reporter: Jason Gerlowski
 Fix For: master (8.0)

Currently, there is logic in three different places that parses arguments for
the {{bin/solr}} scripts. There is logic in the scripts themselves
({{bin/solr}}, {{bin/solr.cmd}}), and there is logic in Java to parse the
arguments sent by the scripts themselves ({{SolrCLI.java}}.

This creates maintenance burden. It makes it easy for inconsistencies to creep
into the scripts (see SOLR-11840). It adds work when adding/removing/modifying
{{bin/solr}} script behavior. And it forces anyone hoping to improve the
scripts to be conversant in both bash and Windows batch scripting.

It would be a big help if _all_ the argument parsing was done on the Java side,
and little or none was done in the scripts themselves. There are a few
situations in which this is difficult, but in no cases is it impossible.

We should move this logic into Java-land.

I agree. Let's fix the remaining issue. The CHANGES.txt entry in trunk is still
in the 7.x part, but I keep it like that. If we decide to not put it to 7.x or
later we can still move.

The change in branch_7x broke anonther codec, because
{{StringHelper.bytesDifference()}} changed its requirements on the terms passed
in.

I revert...

We should fix the issue and then merge the branch also to 7.x.

yes we have to proceed with caution. the problem is the stringhelper change
impacts all term dictionaries. but it was broken what they were doing before :)

it is made difficult by some term dictionaries, such as the docvalues ones,
which do not kick in unless there are many terms, so testing there is light. We
should really review all uses first.

maybe the change is ok for 7.x too, maybe not. we can decide, but we should
first get it in safely for master.

The change in branch_7x broke a nonther codec, because
StringHelper.bytesDifference() changed its requirements on the terms passed in.

In revert...

We should fix the issue and then merge the branch also to 7.x.

[jira] [Created] (LUCENE-8154) TODO List when upgrading to Java 9 as minimum requirement

2018-02-04 Thread Uwe Schindler (JIRA)
Uwe Schindler created LUCENE-8154:

Summary: TODO List when upgrading to Java 9 as minimum requirement
 Key: LUCENE-8154
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8154
 Project: Lucene - Core
  Issue Type: Task
Reporter: Uwe Schindler

This issue is just a placeholder to record stuff that needs to be done when we
upgrade to Java 9 as minimum requirement for running Lucene/Solr:

- Remove {{FutureArrays}} and {{FutureObjects}} from source tree and change
code to use Java 9 native methods. Disable MR-JAR building (maybe only disable
so we can reuse at later stages)
- Remove Java 8 bytebuffer unmapping code

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-11939) Collection API: property.name ignored when creating collections

Alexander S. commented on SOLR-11939:

Hi Varun,

I am referring to
[https://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/6_6/collections-api.html]
|property._name_=_value_|string|No| |Set core property _name_ to _value_. See
the section [Defining
core.properties|https://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/6_6/defining-core-properties.html#defining-core-properties]
for details on supported properties and values.|

All shards and replicas are created on separate Solr instances so a single name
for all cores would work in this case.

Well, I started working on core names mostly because the WEB UI (at least in
5.3.1) doesn't work with collections so I wasn't aware that query requests
would work with collection names also. Core name doesn't matter that much then
and we're fine with generic core names.

It would be good to mention this in the docs somewhere.

Best,

Alexander S.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-11939) Collection API: property.name ignored when creating collections

Varun Thacker commented on SOLR-11939:
--

Hi Alexander ,

When you say there is discrepancy b/w the docs and the API which docs are you
referring to? Anything from [http://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/] ?

In general since you are creating a 4 shard collection , internally the
collections api will creates 1 replica per shard which internally is a core .
"property.name" won't work since you can't pass all 4 names.

Perhaps if you use the add-replica command (
[http://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide//collections-api.html#addreplica|http://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/7_2/collections-api.html#addreplica]
)  you could specify the name but in general it's best if you let Solr pick a
generic name.

So unless you find anywhere in the solr ref guide that confused you to believe
that you need to specify "property.name" I'd like to close out the Jira.

> Let's highlight the ref guide which we put a lot of effort in maintaining and

> - What is a SolrClientCache
> - Which Stream objects should be a singleton and reused
> - How many http connections / connections_per_host are we limited with by
> default
> - Example where the the Solr query node becomes the co-ordinator for the
> streaming expressions ( {{TupleStream solrStream = new
> SolrStream(solr_query_node, paramsLoc);}}
> - How to use an "empty" Solr node to fire queries against. This node should
> not have any collections. We could reduce the jetty thread pool size to rate
> limit number of parallel queries potentially?
