I'm really liking the idea of adding a LIST action. That would allow us to
have the same commit for all branches. Optionally, we could deprecate STATUS
and remove it in the next major version, with LIST as the replacement.

The last part of the proposal, removing initFailures and just including failed
cores in the regular core list, probably needs to be a master-only change. An
alternate idea for that: implement a LIST action that does what was proposed,
and leave STATUS as it is.

[jira] [Updated] (SOLR-12889) Clean up CoreAdmin behavior and responses when acting on cores that failed to initialize

2018-10-20 Thread Shawn Heisey (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-12889?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel

Shawn Heisey updated SOLR-12889:

Description:
Solr isn't behaving quite correctly when performing CoreAdmin actions on cores
that exist, but failed to initialize.
 * RELOAD works. That was made possible by SOLR-10021.
 * UNLOAD works, and can even delete directories if asked to.
 * RENAME works, but Solr must be restarted for the admin UI to reflect the new
name in the "SolrCore Initialization Failures" message.
 * SWAP doesn't actually work, but returns a response that *LOOKS* like it
worked.

I didn't try the other actions, because it doesn't really make any sense to
allow those on a core that failed.

What I see as things that need to be checked or implemented when acting on
failed cores:
 * SWAP
 ** Fail fast.
 ** OR make it work properly. If we choose this, adjust the core name in the
initFailures part of the STATUS response.
 * RENAME
 ** Fail fast.
 ** OR make it work properly. If we choose this, adjust the core name in the
initFailures part of the STATUS response.
 * UNLOAD
 ** This looks like it behaves correctly. Tried it with deleteInstanceDir=true
and it did wipe out the whole core.
 * Other actions not already mentioned
 ** Fail fast

Something else to consider: Get rid of the initFailures part of the STATUS
response. List all cores, even those that failed. Include a boolean item in
the response to indicate whether initialization succeeded, and only list some
of the full information for a failed core. This would make implementing
SOLR-12863 easier.

I've been trying to decipher the javascript and html for the admin UI and it is
proving to be difficult. My javascript knowledge is only a little bit past
beginner.

The CoreAdmin API action STATUS does return the names of cores that fail to
initialize, in an "initFailures" section. I've been doing some tests to see
what actions can be taken on failed cores, and filed SOLR-12889 for cleaning
that up.

Solr isn't behaving quite correctly when performing CoreAdmin actions on cores

 * RELOAD works. That was made possible by SOLR-10021.

Could this be an opportunity . . . for Solr to eat its own dog food?

How about using Streaming Expressions . . . For example the following
expression provides a frequency table for a numeric field:

let (a=search(MyCollection,
 q="*:*",
 fl="myWordCount_l",
 fq="myWordCount_l:[0 TO *]",
 rows=1000,
 sort="myWordCount_l asc"),
 b=col(a, myWordCount_l),
 c=freqTable(b))

With the addition of a filter function (either an exponential function or just
a list of step points), it would be on par with the data being provided from
Luke.

Re: Curiosity Q about placement of expressions classes

2018-10-20 Thread Gus Heck
Hi Shawn,

Yeah, I understand that's the general logic but the recommendation in the
above link is to avoid using *most* of the classes and supply a string
representing the expression. A user seeing all these classes in the
javadoc (or ide) would easily think that they should be using them.

After looking back at the 7.2 refguide I see that there used to be an
example that explicitly set up names for classes, but that's now done
automatically via o.a.s.streaming.Lang (yay for standardization! :) ), so
there is no need to reference the vast majority of the streaming classes
directly (unless ignoring Eric's advice in the linked post)

This morning for fun I tested what it takes to move everything in the
o.a.s.solrj.io package to core as a package names o.a.s.streaming, and only
a few unit test configs got sticky. There were no cross refs to constants
or uses by outside classes. I think things may have progressed to the point
where stuff users shouldn't be using could be pulled down to core before
they do get entangled in dependencies.

Of course one can't just move everything, one has to leave behind something
to facilitate the execution of streaming... but from the looks of the
example here:
https://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/7_5/streaming-expressions.html this
process needs only a zkhost, a collection and a string containing the
expression, so it seems like the string should pass directly to a cloud
solr client (which knows about a zkhost and collection already) and not
require any special classes beyond the TupleStream return value and Tuple
(produced by TupleStream)... plus Explanation and StreamComparator which
are returned by other methods on TupleStream.

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12884) Admin UI, admin/luke and *Point fields

Christopher Ball commented on SOLR-12884:

Could this be an opportunity . . . for Solr to eat its own dog food?

How about using Streaming Expressions . . . For example the following
expression would provides a frequency table for a numeric field:

let (a=search(MyCollection,
 q="*:*",
 fl="myWordCount_l",
 fq="myWordCount_l:[0 TO *]",
 rows=1000,
 sort="myWordCount_l asc"),
 b=col(a, myWordCount_l),
 c=freqTable(b))

With the addition of an exponential function as a filter, it would be on par
with the data being provided from Luke.

All communication between Solr nodes uses SolrJ.  SolrJ is an integral
part of the server as well as a jar providing a standalone client.

Many of the string constants that Solr provides are actually located in
SolrJ, because they are useful for both client and server operations.
Take a look at the CommonParams class.

Streaming expressions are something that users want to do with the
client, so it makes sense for some significant parts of it to live in
the client code.

Thanks,
Shawn

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-7642) Should launching Solr in cloud mode using a ZooKeeper chroot create the chroot znode if it doesn't exist?

2018-10-20 Thread Shawn Heisey (JIRA)

[
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-7642?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=16657934#comment-16657934
 ]

Shawn Heisey commented on SOLR-7642:

[~janhoy], that seems like a good compromise.

In truth I would prefer to always create the chroot without restriction, so
SolrCloud is easier to use.

My agreement with the notion of only auto-creating "/solr" was just to address
fears about the creation of surplus and/or incorrect znodes.

Sometimes we know enough about a situation that we can easily dismiss fears and
objections to our plan ... hopefully with a rational reason. Creation of extra
znodes for incorrect chroots could certainly happen in the wild, and I can't
say with 100 percent certainty that it would never cause anybody any actual
problems. For that reason, I don't think we can ignore it.

If I'm honest, I think the system property to restrict the chroot name is a
placebo. But sometimes users need the assurance that a placebo provides, so I
support the idea. I wouldn't expect much implementation difficulty.

> {code}
> The work-around for this is to use the scripts/cloud-scripts/zkcli.sh script
> to create the chroot znode (bootstrap action does this).
> I'm wondering if we shouldn't just create the znode if it doesn't exist? Or
> is that some violation of using a chroot?

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-12785) Add test for activation functions in NeuralNetworkModel

Kamuela Lau commented on SOLR-12785:

Deleted old patches and added new ones to reflect the fact that Leaky Relu and
TanH were added in SOLR-12780.

A-patch adds tests without changing the implementation of default Activation
implementations (via a network with exactly one input and one output node).

B-patch changes implementation of default Activation implementations and adds
tests for that.

To put it another way, I'm not sure why this statement from that article
must be true: "SolrJ is what’s used for the communication between the Solr
node, so this level must be exposed."

Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-7642:
---

We could think the other way around. Just let Solr auto create any chroot
specified in ZK_HOST, but add an optional system property that users can set in
production to restrict to a certain chroot, e.g. {{-Dsolr.zkChroot=/solr2}}. It
would allow a very smooth dev/test experience, we could start recommending
users to always use a chroot, and we can provide users with added peace of mind
in production if they want to safeguard against human errors by adding an extra
line to {{solr.in.sh}}.

Curiosity Q about placement of expressions classes

2018-10-20 Thread Gus Heck
In prep for my talk at the conference I wound up having to make one quick
and dirty adjustment to the MaxMetric to handle dates (I need to think
about if I "fixed" the right thing there however). I'll probably open an
issue around that in a bit.

However, considering this post
https://lucidworks.com/2017/12/06/streaming-expressions-in-solrj/ and my
initial gut reaction of "why is THIS in solrj" I'm wondering what the
rational for having all of the streaming expressions classes (including
metrics) in the SolrJ area is. It seems more like something that happens on
the server side so I would have expected it to be in core.

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-8534) Another case of Polygon tessellator going into an infinite loop

Ignacio Vera commented on LUCENE-8534:
--

I had another go and now I can easily reproduce the issue:
{code:java}
public void testSmallPolygonTessellation() throws Exception {
  Polygon poly = GeoTestUtil.createRegularPolygon(0.0, 0.0, 1, 2500);
  assertTrue(Tessellator.tessellate(poly).size() > 0);
}{code}
Note that I am creating very tiny polygon with quite a lot of points. I think
the logic expect all points to have different Morton values which is not the
case here. Maybe the definition of point equality needs to be changed.

[~nknize], WDYT?

> Following on from https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-6968, provide
> a query parser that builds queries that provide a measure of Jaccard
> similarity. The initial patch includes banded queries that were also proposed
> on the original issue.
>
> I have one outstanding questions:
> * Should the score from the overall query be normalised?
> Note, that the band count is currently approximate and may be one less than
> in practise.
