JDK 13 enters Rampdown Phase One

2019-06-15 Thread Rory O'Donnell

Hi Uwe & Dawid,

*JDK 13 Early Access build **25 is now available **at : - jdk.java.net/13/*

 * Per the JDK 13 schedule [1], we are now in Rampdown Phase One.
 o For more details , see Mark Reinhold's email to jdk-dev mailing
   list [2]
 o The overall feature set is frozen, no further JEPs will be
   targeted to this release.
 * Changes in this build 25 [4]

*Request for feedback on JEP 353 integrated in b24
*

JEP 353: Reimplement the Legacy Socket API" has been integrated into
jdk-13+24. It would be very useful if applications or libraries using
java.net.Socket or java.net.ServerSocket APIs could test with this build
and report any issues found. The JEP provides information on the system
property that can be used to switch back to the old implementation and
that may be useful to check for behavior differences between the old and
new implementation. It would be very useful to get feedback via the
OpenJDK net-dev mailing list, bugs via the usual channel.

*Updates to Release Notes since last email*

 * b25 - Support Kerberos cross-realm referrals (RFC 6806)(JDK-8215032
   )
 * b25 - Add -XX:SoftMaxHeapSize flag(JDK-8222145
   )
 * b24 - Reimplement the Legacy Socket API(JDK-8221481
   )
 o see above request for feedback
 * b24  - Deprecated rmic tool For Removal(JDK-8217412
   )
 * b24 - New String constants for Canonical XML 1.1 URIs(JDK-8224767
   )
 * b23 - Support for Unicode 12.1 (JDK-8221431
   )
 * b21 - Upgrade CLDR to Version 35.1 (JDK-8221432
   )

*OpenJDK 14 **Early Access build 1 **is now available **at : -
jdk.java.net/14/*

 * These early-access, open-source builds are provided under the GNU
   General Public License, version 2, with the Classpath Exception
   .
 * Changes in this build [5]

{quote}At update time, we need to recognized that the root field isn't
retrievable, and thus prevent atomic updates to non-root documents.
{quote}
I started working on this, and opened a pull request since working with
multiple patches makes it a little harder to spot changes.
I am unsure which test out of the SolrExampleTests should be used with the
default config in order to test this.
 On the other hand, would writing a new test case for this be a better solution?

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-8863) Improve handling of edge cases in Kuromoji's DIctionaryBuilder

2019-06-15 Thread Tomoko Uchida (JIRA)

[

Tomoko Uchida commented on LUCENE-8863:
---

As far as UniDic and trustworthy extensions (neologd or Sudachi), they should
not have empty base form or POS tag or something else (I will check it, please
trust me). Empty base form is actually a bug, and I have to report about it to
the dictionary developers if those have invalid or errorneous entries.

> While building a custom Kuromoji system dictionary, I discovered a few issues.
> First, the dictionary encoding has room for 13-bit (left and right) ids, but
> really only supports 12 bits since this was all that was needed for the
> IPADIC dictionary that ships with Kuromoji. The good news is we can easily
> add support by fixing the bit-twiddling math.
> Second, the dictionary builder has a number of assertions that help uncover
> problems in the input (like these overlarge ids), but the assertions aren't
> enabled by default, so an unsuspecting new user doesn't get any benefit from
> them, so we should upgrade to "real" exceptions.
> Finally, we want to handle the case of empty base forms differently. Kuromoji
> does stemming by substituting a base form for a word when there is a base
> form in the dictionary. Missing base forms are expected to be supplied as
> {{*}}, but if a dictionary provides an empty string base form, we would end
> up stripping that token completely. Since there is no possible meaning for an
> empty base form (and the dictionary builder already treats {{*}} and empty
> strings as equivalent in a number of other cases), I think we should simply
> ignore empty base forms (rather than replacing words with empty strings when
> tokenizing!)

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-13545) ContentStreamUpdateRequest no longer closes stream

2019-06-15 Thread Colvin Cowie (JIRA)

Colvin Cowie commented on SOLR-13545:
-

Hi Mikhail, I had a look at doing it with a mock/spy. It worked, but it feels
fairly fragile, since I didn't have direct access to the InputStream that is
created, and had to spy on the invocations all the way down to it.

I also saw StreamingUpdateRequest (which is using an autoclose) and it is
newing up the stream right where it is used.

{code:java}
  @Override
  public void write(OutputStream os) throws IOException {
    try (InputStream is = new FileInputStream(f)) {
  IOUtils.copy(is, os);
    }
  }
{code}
So if I was to try and write a mocking test for it, I wouldn't have anywhere to
hook in.

I could change the actual ContentStreamUpdateRequest and StreamingUpdateRequest
classes to expose the InputStream(s) they open, so that it's easier to mock
out, but I don't know what the testing strategy is when it comes to something
like this.

For now, I've updated the tests for both so that they create a copy of the file
they were uploading, upload it, then delete it. That will fail on Windows if
the stream isn't closed, but will (probably) always pass on linux, even if the
stream isn't closed. So it's not a foolproof test either.

I've submitted the PR (https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/723), but I'm
happy to do something different with the tests though, if it's worth pursuing.

Thanks

[GitHub] [lucene-solr] colvinco opened a new pull request #723: SOLR-13545: AutoClose stream in ContentStreamUpdateRequest

2019-06-15 Thread GitBox
colvinco opened a new pull request #723: SOLR-13545: AutoClose stream in
ContentStreamUpdateRequest
URL: https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/723

   # Description

   As discussed on SOLR-13545, ContentStreamUpdateRequest doesn't close the
InputStream it creates, after a change made in SOLR-12142

   # Solution

   Use try-with-resources to autoclose the stream

   # Tests

   I've updated existing tests that make update requests backed by file
streams, so that they attempt to delete the file they have streamed to Solr. If
the stream isn't closed, the test will fail on Windows, since the file will be
locked. On Linux the file will appear to be deleted even if the stream isn't
immediately closed.

   I think the alternative would be to change the request classes to expose the
InputStream so that it can be mocked or spied on, to explicitly check that
close is called, but that also feels fragile.

   # Checklist

   Please review the following and check all that apply:

   - [X] I have reviewed the guidelines for [How to
Contribute](https://wiki.apache.org/solr/HowToContribute) and my code conforms
to the standards described there to the best of my ability.
   - [X] I have created a Jira issue and added the issue ID to my pull request
title.
   - [X] I am authorized to contribute this code to the ASF and have removed
any code I do not have a license to distribute.
   - [X] I have developed this patch against the `master` branch.
   - [X] I have run `ant precommit` and the appropriate test suite.
   - [X] I have added tests for my changes.
   - [] I have added documentation for the Ref Guide (for Solr changes only).

We can't make the code crazy just because its popular. But we can make the

> Visualization is now a fundamental element of Solr Streaming Expressions and
> Math Expressions. This ticket will create a visual guide to Solr Math
> Expressions and Solr Streaming Expressions that includes *Apache Zeppelin*
> visualization examples.
> It will also cover using the JDBC expression to *analyze* and *visualize*
> results from any JDBC compliant data source.
> Intro from the guide:
> {code:java}
> Streaming Expressions exposes the capabilities of Solr Cloud as composable
> functions. These functions provide a system for searching, transforming,
> analyzing and visualizing data stored in Solr Cloud collections.
> At a high level there are four main capabilities that will be explored in the
> documentation:
> * Searching, sampling and aggregating results from Solr.
> * Transforming result sets after they are retrieved from Solr.
> * Analyzing and modeling result sets using probability and statistics and
> machine learning libraries.
> * Visualizing result sets, aggregations and statistical models of the data.
> {code}
>
> A few sample visualizations are attached to the ticket.

{quote}Can we just throw an exception on empty base form? It sounds like a
missing check in the code. I don't think its good to try to support N different
ways of doing things when only one is tested (the ipadic way)
{quote}
I agree with the sentiment - be strict, and keep it simple. One thing is we
already handle empty POS fields by ignoring. EG in the section where it says
"build up the POS string" we concatenate various POS tokens with "-" as a
separator, unless they are empty, and then we don't add adjacent separator
chars. The other thing is – I don't know what dictionaries may already exist?
Is there an externally-defined standard we would should accept? I can certainly
modify the dictionary I have to have "*," but what about Unidic or dictionaries
people might get from Sudachi or other neologd providers? If there is some
common usage that expects empty strings, I think we should support it, and it
really is kind of natural to express a missing value with an empty string? Are
there people here who have looked at those?

   which all makes me wonder whether test-tools has become obsolete?

[jira] [Commented] (SOLR-13537) Build Status Badge in git README

2019-06-15 Thread Shawn Heisey (JIRA)

Shawn Heisey commented on SOLR-13537:
-

Does the badge reflect the build only or the build+tests?

I don't think it would be all that useful with the build only, and with the
current state of Solr tests, build+tests would be red a large percentage of the
time. That could cause a reputation problem for the project ... although it
could be argued that's a plus, as it might be a strong motivation to make
things better. The idea proposed by [~janhoy] where we report on a build
running a smaller subset of tests (at least until Solr's full integration tests
improve) sounds good. I think that's the only way this would be helpful right
now.

We have people diligently working on improving the Solr tests so they don't
fail constantly, but it's a huge task, and isn't going to be completed quickly.
 I wish I had enough free time available to help with that.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think the badge would only show up on github. Since
github is not the canonical source repository, and as far as I can tell the
readme is not rendered by Apache gitbox, I wonder how often our committers
would actually see it. As Jan says, the information is not all that useful to
anyone who is not working in the code, and because of the state of Solr tests,
I have doubts that it would be useful to those of us who are working in the
code.

Down the road, I do think it's a great idea, but right now, I'm not sure it is.
 Consider this a -0 vote.

Side note: This probably belongs in LUCENE, not SOLR.

> In order to aid developers and DevOps engineers who are working in a
> git-driven ecosystem, it would be helpful to see the status builds in the
> README. This is a standard for many open source projects. I think one could
> debate whether we should have a multi-line build badge visual in the README
> because people need to know about the builds for various versions and
> platforms in the case of Lucene/Solr because it is such a large and widely
> used project, in a variety of environments. The badges not only celebrate
> that fact, they support its persistence in the future with new developers who
> look for such information instictively.
> I would recommend the active build pipelines (currently 8.x and 9.x) for each
> platform, Linux, Windows, MacOSX, and Solaris.

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-8863) Improve handling of edge cases in Kuromoji's DIctionaryBuilder

Robert Muir commented on LUCENE-8863:

Can we just throw an exception on empty base form? It sounds like a missing
check in the code. I don't think its good to try to support N different ways of
doing things when only one is tested (the ipadic way)
These isn't an "edge" case, I see it as bug in your dictionary, we should fail
:)

I'll submit a patch soon. My initial idea was to maintain LUCENE-8816 as an
overall tracking/planning issue and then have smaller issues, one for each
patch. I'm used to a style of one issue tracking a fairly small amount of work;
perhaps one or two self-contained patches.

Tomoko Uchida commented on LUCENE-8863:
---

Thanks [~sokolov],
 +1 for changing assertions to "real" exceptions. I think it would be good if
we add a special exception class for it, to improve clarity and
understandability.
 To deal with user generated dictionary, I am also thinking about adding an
option or parameter to the dictionary builder to "ignore invalid entries and
just output some WARNING then continue" instead of emitting exceptions, for
tolerance. But it may be the out of scope of this issue and I can handle it
with another issue.

[jira] [Commented] (LUCENE-8816) Decouple Kuromoji's morphological analyser and its dictionary

> As many Japanese already know, default built-in dictionary bundled with
> Kuromoji (MeCab IPADIC) is a bit old and no longer maintained for many years.
> While it has been slowly obsoleted, well-maintained and/or extended
> dictionaries risen up in recent years (e.g.
> [mecab-ipadic-neologd|https://github.com/neologd/mecab-ipadic-neologd],
> [UniDic|https://unidic.ninjal.ac.jp/]). To use them with Kuromoji, some
> attempts/projects/efforts are made in Japan.
> However current architecture - dictionary bundled jar - is essentially
> incompatible with the idea "switch the system dictionary", and developers
> have difficulties to do so.
> Traditionally, the morphological analysis engine (viterbi logic) and the
> encoded dictionary (language model) had been decoupled (like MeCab, the
> origin of Kuromoji, or lucene-gosen). So actually decoupling them is a
> natural idea, and I feel that it's good time to re-think the current
> architecture.
> Also this would be good for advanced users who have customized/re-trained
> their own system dictionary.
> Goals of this issue:
> * Decouple JapaneseTokenizer itself and encoded system dictionary.
> * Implement dynamic dictionary load mechanism.
>  * Provide developer-oriented dictionary build tool.
> Non-goals:
> * Provide learner or language model (it's up to users and should be outside
> the scope).
> I have not dove into the code yet, so have no idea about it's easy or
> difficult at this moment.

[jira] [Created] (LUCENE-8863) Improve handling of edge cases in Kuromoji's DIctionaryBuilder

2019-06-15 Thread Mike Sokolov (JIRA)
Mike Sokolov created LUCENE-8863:

 Summary: Improve handling of edge cases in Kuromoji's
DIctionaryBuilder
 Key: LUCENE-8863
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8863
 Project: Lucene - Core
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Mike Sokolov
Assignee: Mike Sokolov

While building a custom Kuromoji system dictionary, I discovered a few issues.

First, the dictionary encoding has room for 13-bit (left and right) ids, but
really only supports 12 bits since this was all that was needed for the IPADIC
dictionary that ships with Kuromoji. The good news is we can easily add support
by fixing the bit-twiddling math.

Kuromoji
does stemming by substituting a base form for a word when there is a base form
in the dictionary. Missing base forms are expected to be supplied as {{*}}, but
if a dictionary provides an empty string base form, we would end up stripping
that token completely. Since there is no possible meaning for an empty base
form (and the dictionary builder already treats {{*}} and empty strings as
equivalent in a number of other cases), I think we should simply ignore empty
base forms (rather than replacing words with empty strings when tokenizing!)

Thanks for testing, [~dsmiley], you definitely found a bug. The issue is that
when adding the array-with-gaps encoding, I did not update the
{{org.apache.util.fst.Util}} class, specifically its {{readCeilArc}}. It's only
used in a couple of places, and I just overlooked. I'm posting a patch that
fixes this issue [[here|https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/pull/721]]

   This method got overlooked when I recently added the new FST encoding.
Thanks to @dsmiley for uncovering this.

[~janhoy] I don't know if you saw, but I added a new badge and screenshot using
a different build rather than the flaky ones.

[jira] [Created] (LUCENE-8862) Collector Level Dynamic Memory Accounting

2019-06-15 Thread Atri Sharma (JIRA)
Atri Sharma created LUCENE-8862:
---

 Summary: Collector Level Dynamic Memory Accounting
 Key: LUCENE-8862
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-8862
 Project: Lucene - Core
  Issue Type: Improvement
Reporter: Atri Sharma

Inspired from LUCENE-8855, I am thinking of adding a new interface which tracks
dynamic memory used by Collectors. This shall allow users to get an
accountability as to the memory usage of their Collectors and better plan their
resource capacity. This shall also allow us to add Collector level limits for
memory usage, thus allowing users a finer control over their resources.
