RE: VOTE: release 4.0 (RC2)

2012-10-06 Thread Uwe Schindler
Hi,

+1 to release this time!

- I ran smoketester on Linux (JDKs: 1.6.0_33, 1.7.0_07, server, 64bit), passed!
- I used the PANGAEA index (version 3.6.1, copied from our production system),
ran checkindex on it (both JDKs) passed. Index size and deletions were reported
correctly this time. I also checked an force-merged PANGAEA index, passed also.
- I used IndexUpgrader to upgrade both 3.6.1 indexes, passed.
- I checked the output of IndexUpgrader again with CheckIndex, the output for
the force-merged 3.6.1 index was identical to the migrated 4.0 index (number of
terms,)
- I compared the index sizes of the single-segment 3.6.1 and 4.0.0 indexes: 4.0
was slightly larger. You have to know that this index contains thousands of
fields (it allows to search in XML based on XQuery-like, so we have a field for
every possible xpath of our rather complex XML schema in the index). The search
speed improved dramatically (because of the separate term dictionaries for
every field). In addition, so the bigger size is also caused by splitting
fields to separate term dictionaries vs. one in 3.6. 4.0 also has more
statistics. I think an index with 10 fields may be smaller, will try this a
little bit later with another index
- I used the demo module to run some text-only queries, they passed.

On small thing: We mention (in lucene's package), that Java 6 is needed, so we
should at least mention that in the release notes. We should improve our
docs/index.(html|xsl) to mention system requirements. Same for Solr. We have a
system requirements page on the website, but that is unversioned, so we should
also add a section for 4.0 there. But this is not the way to go. We should also
mention that Java 7 is the preferred Java version, if you have 1.7.0_01 at
least.

Hi,

-1 to release those artifacts!

First the good thing: I ran smoketester on an Ubuntu 12.04.1 Server with 2
older Opteron CPUs (NUMA), passed perfectly (1.6.0_33 and 1.7.0_07). I also
inspected the artifacts and had a look at JavaDocs. I found some typos in
READMEs, but all not very problematic. I had no real Lucene 4.0 Application
ready to test with (I am still in process to upgrade PANGAEA), but so far so
good.

But I found a serious bug when comparing the output of checkindex on the same
index in 4.0 and 3.6.1 (used a 7 GiB PANGAEA index):
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-4455; The deletions are reported
negative (segment with no deletions is reported to have them) and the size of
the segments is doubled, causing MergePolicy to behave wrong (depending on
settings).

In any case: Many thanks to Robert for making the release - if we must respin,
depends on you!

Does this mean a re-spin?

I have a low-risk but high impact (in terms of features) bug-fix I would
like to get in to 4.0: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-
but I did not want to put the breaks on any release that was being voted on.

Patch looks fine: though it should have a CHANGES entry (since it was
introduced after the beta release from what I can tell)

The only other things i see listed as bugs are
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-3637 and
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-3560

If these things are safe and useful to fix in 4.0 (the three patches
look safe to me), then do it asap (but of course run the proper
tests).

Thanks

If it doesnt, then it should have one for 4.1

I just got it committed to the 4.0 release branch, after I ran tests.

I didn't add a CHANGES.txt entry because this is basically a bug to an
existing entry that is already post-beta (SOLR-3304).

For the record: My vote for RC0 is -1.

In my opinion, SOLR-3875, SOLR-3879, and LUCENE-4430 seem serious enough
to warrant a respin (and if a few of the other recently fixed bugs can
make it in even better).

I don't want to speak on behalf of anyone but myself, but the sense i get
from various comments in Jira IRC is that I am not alone in thinking we
should respin a new RC1 -- however this should in no way discourage people
from continuing to test RC0, because that's the only way we are going to
find more bugs that we should fix for RC1 (even though i've already voted
-1, I'm sure as hell going to keep hammering away on RC0)

Running smokeTestRelease.py on Win7+Cygwin, I can't get past the Solr example

I ran the smoke tester three times using Oracle v1.7.0_01 64-bit, and then two
times using Oracle v1.7.0_07 64-bit. Four out of the five runs failed on the
first Java7 Solr example test (from the unpacked .tgz distribution), while one
run passed the .tgz Solr example test, but then failed on the .zip Solr example

so please remember to back-port fixes that should go into 4.0 to the

I think Roman is working on trying to coerce the linter into testing
that the .war file is correct. Maybe you can help him (python is hard
for me)?

As far as the ecj-linter, its technically a test: I don't object to it
being backported except for the fact that I would prefer we only do
what is minimal and necessary.

This is really important: we need to maintain stability. the release
branch shouldn't be a free-for-all, even for bugfixes.

Fortunately, it looks like maybe I get covered by SOLR-3875 and
maybe SOLR-3879 being enough reasons for a re-spin G
If so, SOLR-3880 is the fix for jEOE appearing in the /browse output.

I would do this check with ANT, but with python it should be possible by doing
a pexec on unzip -l WARFILE | grep -v servlet-api

As far as the ecj-linter, its technically a test: I don't object to it being
backported except for the fact that I would prefer we only do what is minimal
 and necessary.

As I said, I don't care, would be nice for later tests on this release branch
with e.g. Jähnkins.

This is really important: we need to maintain stability. the release branch
 shouldn't be a free-for-all, even for bugfixes.

In other Open Source projects, the stable release branch is closed down and
only the RM has commit rights (e.g., PHP before it used to use GIT).

yeah, i dont want to be the one guy committing to this thing, I don't
currently have the time to manage all the fixes, nor do i necessarily
know enough about all the pieces involved to do the correct
cost-benefit analysis.

instead i'm asking that other people do this: maybe the 'correct' fix
for some bugs is too risky to go in the release branch and a safe
workaround makes more sense (we have 4.x/5.x for bigger changes, thats
fine).

and please be conservative, just open the issue with Fix version: 4.0
and Blocker, and take your time. let changes bake. add tests to ensure
additional regressions are not introduced by fixes (I am concerned
about that). run 'ant nightly-smoke' before committing to the release
branch (because my jenkins is running this continously, and is
configured to automatically revert commits that break the build).

of course I want a solid release that isn't full of bugs, I am just of
course pushing back on *all changes* because I'm trying to encourage
stability.
