There seems to be a link missing at the end of the first line of the
above -- the link to info on Java's licensing. Presumably it's this
page: http://www.java.com/en/download/license.jsp
"(iii) you do not distribute additional software intended to replace any
component(s) of the Software"

so it MAY or MAY NOT be distributed along with a version of OOo built
with GCC 4/GCJ?

Yes, it is possible. Go here,

I recommend, if you just want to use OOo, NeoOffice/J. We are
developing the X11 branch to 2.0, but it is not quite there yet. It will
be very soon, however, and it is terrific. But for now, NeoOffice/J,
which is an excellent derivative, will do nicely.

Sorry to say this, but this text seems to dance around the question. It
looks like all it said was "read the license". Maybe it was just me, but I

Also, this bit:

That page doesn't seem to have any information about Java's license. :-(
Lastly, when you have a bracket inside a bracket, that's a sign that the
text is a bit complicated. Don't take me wrong, I enjoy using nested
brackets myself. But the Java thing is a sensitive issue and we probably
want to go for clarity.

Thank you for doing this work Erwin.

I think yes too, but I read somewhere that 'major' part of your

From my point of view - dependency on Java is growing, we should ask
Sun for this and place the answer on the www.openoffice.org site, so

Re: [Marketing] OpenDocument reader--as a Firefox extension

Daniel,
Thanks for helping to refine and clarify the idea. I think you are onto
something when suggesting two options, or two steps in the process of
developing the plugin. Must be the logical mathematician in you!

As for motivating people, the only thing I can think of is presenting
the idea to a broad array of forums, and hoping it catches people's
attention somehow. As such, I'm writing a quick article which I'll
attempt to publish online and get linked from various sources. First
I'll submit it to OSViews.com, then a few others (maybe try for a
Slashdot link too). I'll post the text to this list first, and ask for
comments and suggestions.

[Firefox] reads documents in standard formats and displays them on the
screen, and some of these formats (xhtml) are probably similar in many
ways to the XML-based OpenDocument formats. The fit is perfect. The
work to create an OOo file viewer by this route is probably less than
any other current option!
Using FireFox for this is a fantastic idea. I can't overstate how great
the idea is. In addition to what you just said, I would add that
OpenDocument is the natural evolution beyond XHTML. OpenDocument can do
anything HTML can, as well as much that XHTML cannot.
Now, there are roughtly two ways to do this:
1) Use an XSLT transformation to turn OpenDocument files to XHTML and
have
FF render the XHTML.

2) Write a complete plugin from scratch.
Option (1) is much easier, provided that:
 * Firefox knows what to do with an XSLT.
 * It's ok to lose formatting.
Writing an XSLT isn't the biggest problem. OOo already comes with one
for
XHTML export. So it comes down to whether FF know what to do with it.
The
second item might be more problematic. HTML simply cannot represent
OpenDocument files with accuracy.

Option (2) has the advantage of better formatting accuracy. It would
look
similar to the PDF plugin.

One idea would be to do this as a "quick and dirty" plugin, and plan
on a
better plugin later on.

Maybe as marketers, we can ignite the motivation in fine programmers
already out there looking for a great new project. What does everybody
think?
This made me smile. I don't know how to motivate someone to do this. It
sounds difficult.
Cheers,

Probably not until summer at the earliest (summer North America).

NeoOffice/J is a fork of OpenOffice.org

The current NeoOffice/J version is based on OOo 1.1.4. From I recall
from the website, the will start working soon on the next version of
NeoOffice/J which will be based on OOo 2.0.

NeoOffice/J is a derivative of OOo.

NeoOffice/J is at 1.1.4. There is no immediate work being done on it to
take it to 2.0. For 2.0, see our ongoing work in the X11 version.

I know the guy, we have a very interesting talk in Berlin, the challenges are
big dealing with MacOSX and OOo, specially because of the way Aqua works. I do
suggest strongly to volunteer to this project. I think you need to know C++ to
be able to contribute.

Ben,
What is the relation between versions of NeoOffice/J and OOo?
For example, does NeoOffice/J 1.1 mean the equivalent of OOo 1.1?
Or is NeoOffice/J 1.1 the equivalent of OOo 1.1.4 or OOo 2.0 beta?

Done.
Oops, wrong one. You've added the location for where to get the license
to it, but haven't included the text to say it's released as CC. Check
the first slide of any of the free lessons to see what I mean. :)

+ The first slide feels too long/blank... might be worth adding a
"click here to continue" type of button instead?
Tried it and it looked bad. I shortened the slide appearance time instead. If
a button would look better, maybe someone has an idea of what it should look
like?
Seems better now.

I think
the lessons should be re-worked completely, as they now look a bit lame (IMO
the weakest part of the presentation).

Does anyone agree that I should re work the lessons and make them at least a
little more comprehensive (although I think <~500KB should be a cut-off
point).
By "lessons", you're meaning feature demonstration? We shouldn't be
aiming to teach skills with this intro. ;)

Great idea. I'll do that now. Should be updated in 30 mins or so.
I think having to watch through the complete mini-demo for each of
components is the most frustrating feeling bit personally. ;)
Do you think "back to components" should be displayed throughout?
Sounds reasonable. Lets try it and see what it looks like.
As an aside, I just tried the demo part for Base, and kept on clicking
Next... it bounced me to the front page of DDGTS. That doesn't seem right.

The "Previous" and "Next" buttons at the bottom of each of the mini-demo
things look really ugly, and too far down. Not sure of a better way,
but thought I'd mention it.

The advantages listed could be better as well as in a better order.
Perhaps draw up a better list of advantages from the OOo1 flash demo,
and Erwin's page of new OOo2 features?
I had a look and shifted a few advantages from elsewhere (there were three
sitting on another slide). Removed one or two that I thought were less
relevant.
Ok. For this page, try it without the logo in the top left as that will
give it more room.

It's probably worth swapping the positions of the Advantages and
Components buttons, because having the Advantages button first makes it
"non-functional". i.e. its the first button many people will click, and
it doesn't go anywhere.

Hope that helps.
:)
Regards and best wishes,
Justin Clift
