Sounds great. My two cents is not to copy http://why.openoffice.org
which rejects the most popular web browser on the planet. It baffles
me that any major web site would do that to such a huge portion of
guests.

Release partys would be a nice idea. I like the idea of getting
together with developers and users... maybe we can do something like
that in Germany as well!
I agree with the idea. The problem with such a party is that we must
know the release date at least a couple of month before, and then we
can't change it. For sure, a party in every major geography would draw a
lot of attention.

[marketing] splash screen for 3.0

2008-07-07 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hello everyone,

thanks to all of you for your great contributions regarding the new
splash screen for 3.0. Unfortunately, some of the important requirements
were missed by most people and given the short time frame until we need
to deliver the new splash screen (next week's Monday, July 14th!), we
have three candidates for the final vote:

- Wyrfel
- Stella Schulze
- Kamonwan

Unfortunately it came to my attention only last week that we can NOT
change the color of the logo as well or alter it in any other way. That
means we need to have a black-blue logo, the original OpenOffice.org
logo, including black seagulls. As this is kind of a new information, we
want to give the three final candidates the chance of modifying their
splash screens accordingly.

In addition, I ask all applicants to also send in their other design
elements (about screen and installer window) and the vector format of
their proposals. Also remember that we need two versions of the logos:
one with Sun logo and copyright text, and one without.

Please also double-check if you have signed and sent in the SCA (Sun
Copyright Assignment) yet. If not, please do so immediately.

I'm sorry for this really short announcement and I must admit that we're
quite late this time for the new design. Nontheless, I hope that we can
work together as a community and make it. :-)

Thanks again to all of you who sent in a proposal - this surely prooves
that the art project isn't dead, and I look forward working with you in
the future!

[marketing] [Fwd: [webmasters] Florida Linux Show 2009]

2008-07-07 Thread sophie

Hi all,

Some of you may be interested by attending.

Kind regards
Sophie

--- Begin Message ---
Hi,

We at the Florida Linux Show 2009 wanted to see if OpenOffice.org would be
interested in exhibiting at the Florida Linux Show 2009 at either the
Jacksonville or Orlando conference. Both shows are business oriented and
will have an Open Source theme. Last year's Jacksonville show had over 400
attendees, over 20 exhibitors, over 15 Official Major Sponsors and the
Florida Linux Show 2008 appeared on over 900 websites, and had three
sessions of eight speakers including Jon "Maddog" Hall and Rob "Limo"
Miller. Video interview clips are still available on Linux.com. Based on
the attendee survey, three words continued to resonate "Awesome, Awesome,
Awesome".

We are going to build on our success from last year and we were hoping that
you might be able to exhibit at the Florida Linux Show 2009 at either or
both the Jacksonville show and or the Orlando show. The Jacksonville show
is March 9th, same location, University of North Florida University Center.
The Orlando show date is tentatively October 26th and several location in
the Orlando area are being considered (I will email you the location once
the selection process is complete). Both shows will have a Linux & Open
Source software theme, however, the Orlando show will also to talking a lot
about Open Source Software Gaming Software.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to exhibit, because you
will receive more media exposure the sooner you because a sponsor or
exhibitor. If OpenSource.org could send a presenter he/she would be most
welcome.

All the Best,

if we find some people organizing this, you definitely have my
vote. :-) We shouldn't try to copy Mozilla, so maybe someone has a
clever idea on how this should look in detail.

It isn't really about 'copying' Mozilla isn't it ? The first experience
of consumption an user has for a project is when (s)he initiates a
download. The issue with doing a download station based system where it
is downloaded once and then passed around would not get the chalk marks
on the wall, but it would sure help a lot of users access an otherwise
big binary.

Having people gather at pre-defined download stations makes for great
time to meet and share messaging about OO.o though.

Well, OOo3 is a much bigger package than FF3, beating the record by
number is unrealistic. However, it might be worth a try to challenge the
FF3 record by megabytes. Half a million downloads should be OK for OOo I
guess.
