[marketing-dev] Oracle Announces Its Intention to Move OpenOffice.org to a Community-Based Project

2011-04-15 Thread Danishka Navin
As a community member I request you to join with the document foundation and
continue the further development.

If you really want to make this as a community project you should listen to
the community. :)

The Document Foundation is not the competitor but proprietary products such
as MS Office.

If Oracle joined with the document foundation, it will be a great decision.

I did not say anything to *...@oracle.com but Oracle.
I do not have any personal issues with any of you.
and you are appointed by Oracle to continue with OO.org with the community.

I just gave an example related to Oracle.

I know nobody want to listen any thing against his/her company as they love
it...

btw, I was replying to Louis and its obvious this move can gain more
community to get MS Office.

simple question;

Oracle forked RHEL (and shamelessly promoting that faked spin as
UNBREAKABLE Linux only with the latest kernel)

Due to this poor approach making any advantage for Microsoft Server Market?

One of the best thing I love in FOSS is choice.

Let community to chose what they want.

This will be a good chance to see more cool features and enhanced HCI from
FOSS Office applications. :)

Still Oracle have a chance to be a good boy in the family of FOSS.

Best Regards,

Good work!

But can we use TDF logo with OO.org logo?

OpenOffice.org logo is not a part of TDF yet.

I like the way you think :)

As you know I am also interested on your work and joined for the l10n work
for OOo4Kids.

since OO.org community moving to LibreOffice you have to create a bridge
between LibreOffice and kids :-)

You are filling an important gap and and its a grate work!

As the 10th Anniversary logo used the standard OO.org logo for
reproduction, I don't know whether we need TM again.

and also I prefer Logos like Mozilla, Firefox, Gnome, CentOS, Ubuntu,
Debian, etc (without TM) but its my personal choice.

But respect for community comments. :)

How many officials per country?

can they cover all the regions?

OO.org is not the only project I am working.

Fedora, Mozilla let there community to talk about those projects.
And they motivate volunteer contributors.

As we don't have a separate Marketing Offices in each country we have to
take the support of volunteers.

None of us can't attend all the events in a country and its not practical.

I strongly recommend we must let others to use OO.org logo and templates for
OO.org related presentations.

WTF!
why the hell we need sponsors approval to use OO.org logo or presentation
template?

They can't control every thing.
If they want to do so, let them to do the OO.org marketing as well.

We are here not because of Oracle or Sun. Just because of OpenOffice.org.
I love OO.org and sponsor will be change time to time but we will not change
due to the sponsor.

What I am expecting is 'Sponsor should support us but he should not control
us.

Please tell me, will Oracle send a person to Sri Lanka to promote OO.org if
I resign from this project?
They want to promote only Oracle Enterprise Office and get the initial work
(l10n, customer feedback) done via OO.org to make stable Oracle Enterprise
Office.

2010-06-27 Thread Danishka Navin
Folks,

I suggest to have a survey in addition to all proposed and planned
activities.

Lets get the feedback from OO.org users and non-users.

What they expected from us?
What they got from OO.org?
What they feel about OO.org? etc

Thanks
Danishka

Dear Folks,

I am the Native Language Project owner of the OO.org Sinhala.
My OO.org ID is 'danishka' .

OO.org released in Sinhala for the 1st time with OO.org 3.2 and we are
planning to
promote it with the release (as we fixed many issues) of 3.2.1 version.

[marketing] Fwd: [FSF] FSF launches free software extension listing for OpenOffice.org

2010-05-08 Thread Danishka Navin
FYI

-- Forwarded message --
From: John Sullivan

Subject: [FSF] FSF launches free software extension listing for
OpenOffice.org
To: info-...@fsf.org, info-pr...@fsf.org

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Friday, May 7, 2010 -- The Free Software
Foundation (FSF) today announced a project to assemble a replacement
extension library for OpenOffice.org, which will list only those
extensions which are free software, at
<http://www.fsf.org/openoffice>.

"OpenOffice.org is free software, and an important contribution to the
free software community. However, the program offers the user a
library of extensions, and some of them are proprietary. Distributing
OpenOffice.org in the usual way has the effect of offering users the
nonfree extensions too," said FSF executive director Peter Brown.

The FSF asked the OpenOffice.org Community Council to list only free
software extensions, or to provide a second independent listing which
only included free extensions, but they declined to change their
policy.

Therefore, the FSF has launched an effort to assemble a replacement
extension library, which will list only the extensions that are free.
Any OpenOffice.org user will be able to use the new library instead of
the usual one just by making a simple configuration change. It will
not require any change in the code of OpenOffice.org itself.

At this stage, the FSF is looking for volunteers to check the
licensing on existing extensions and identify the free ones, providing
a short descriptive text for each of them so they can be listed in the
new library.

They have started a mailing list for coordination, and a project page
on the LibrePlanet.org wiki with instructions for how users and
developers can make a contribution to the effort. They are
at
<http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/openoffice-extensions-discuss>
and <http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Group:OpenOfficeExtensions>.

Once the library is ready, the FSF will be asking volunteers to help
develop free replacements for the nonfree extensions that
OpenOffice.org currently distributes.

OpenOffice.org users can also help by contacting the OpenOffice
Community Council and respectfully requesting that OpenOffice.org not
be used as a platform for distributing proprietary software. Contact
information for the current committee members is listed under
"Representatives" at <http://council.openoffice.org>. OpenOffice.org
community members (defined by the Council as people who have
registered accounts on openoffice.org) can also suggest new agenda
items for the Council's next meeting at
<
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Community_Council/Meeting_Guidelines#New_Action_Items
>.

### About the Free Software Foundation

The Free Software Foundation, founded in 1985, is dedicated to
promoting computer users' right to use, study, copy, modify, and
redistribute computer programs. The FSF promotes the development and
use of free (as in freedom) software -- particularly the GNU operating
system and its GNU/Linux variants -- and free documentation for free
software. The FSF also helps to spread awareness of the ethical and
political issues of freedom in the use of software, and its Web sites,
located at fsf.org and gnu.org, are an important source of information
about GNU/Linux. Donations to support the FSF's work can be made at
<http://donate.fsf.org>. Its headquarters are in Boston, MA, USA.

### About Free Software and Open Source

The free software movement's goal is freedom for computer users. Some,
especially corporations, advocate a different viewpoint, known as
"open source," which cites only practical goals such as making
software powerful and reliable, focuses on development models, and
avoids discussion of ethics and freedom. These two viewpoints are
different at the deepest level. For more explanation, see
<http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html>.

[marketing] Survey on OO.org

2010-03-29 Thread Danishka Navin
Dear All,

As I learned there are few Sri Lankan Banks and Insurgences companies has
been migrated to OO.org.
But some of their employees told me that they are not 100% satisfied with
OO.org.

What do you think about doing a survey on OO.org user satisfaction.

Can you help me?

I strongly belive that we can get a good input for OO.org enhancements.

Something like:

Reason for migration: self/due to company decision etc
Who introduce OO.org?
When u migrated
how long?
working filed/education level
whether he/she use Sinhala on OO.org

What are the great/cool things on OO.org
what are missing on Oo.org
 what we should add

whats the reason (if he/she not using oo.org
