just so long as you don't assume that the root project is actually in a root
direvctory of the project.
we have some 40 projects in CVS and it is utterly infeasable to move them all
to support a strict folder heirarchy. we will have another project, adjacent
to these projects which holds the master poms.
we need a var that always points to the root direcotry in multi module builds

${basedir} always points to the local module. There are cases, when having a
local relative repository, when it would be usefull to have a var that always
pointed to the root project, ${rootdir}.
In such a case you may want to think of having the names ${rootdir}
${moduledir}
