So the donations is in someone’s hand awaiting further work to address dlight
dependency after which it will be merged into the git repository?

Beyond voting and the like, is there anything the community can do on this?

Re: c/c++ module ?

2019-10-22 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
It has been open source since approximately the year 2000, so basically 20
years.

Now that it is in Apache, it is on top of that open governance — not only
can you reuse it, you can also directly drive its roadmap.

When will the next release be released? Up to you: start voting in vote
threads. When will it provide feature X, Y, or Z? Up to you: provide the
pull request and it will be done.

The limit is your sky.

We’ve just signed the document and handed it over to Apache, so the C/C++
donation is complete (took a lot of work) but it depends on something else
that is still in process of donation, therefore it is probably better to
wait for that part (dlight) to be donated rather than putting something
into our GitHub that won’t build. So there’s a lot of progress but even
more needed.

Well, they are not needed for most users, though It is easier to explain
the users where to find these tools when we are requesting a profiling

Maven projects Compile on Save requires nbjavac

2019-10-22 Thread Alessandro
Hi all,
while testing NB11.2 voting candidate running on OpenJDK 11 I noticed
that the "Compile on Save" checkbox in maven projects project properties
dialog was greyed out but I didn't digged it further.
After a while I tested the installation of nbjavac plugin and shortly
afterwards noticed that the "Compile on Save" checkbox was enabled and
selected.

Is this a known requirement?

Out of curiosity which features does exactly nbjavac enable when on OpenJDK
11 ?

Found no direct documentation on the web site/wiki but as far as I recall
nbjavac is mandatory for JDK 8 and optional for JDK 9 and above.

Regards,
Alex

[DISCUSS] Handling release updates

2019-10-22 Thread Neil C Smith
Hi All,

A few recent emails make me think that there's at least the
possibility we'll want to consider some cherry-picked module updates
for 11.2 over the next month or so, assuming the release goes through
OK.

At present I think we've only done this once for 11.0 with the gradle
patch update? That process seemed a little unwieldy to me, and
somewhat detached from our build server?! Or maybe that's me
mis-remembering things?

I'm wondering whether if we do ship updates, we trigger a new
milestone in the release branch, and have a vote on full sources, as
per normal. Alongside that we nominate specific module convenience
binaries (nbms) to be added to the mirrors / update centre.

That seems a potentially easier way to handle this. On the downside,
it may require keeping both the original and updated source bundles on
the mirrors? I'm also wondering what the mirroring / archiving
implications of overwriting specific nbms are?

We would possibly end up with a dist structure something like -

11.2 /
  11.2 source
  11.2 binaries
  nbms /
update centre
11.2-update1
  11.2-update1 source

Any thoughts? Barking up wrong tree? :-)

Best wishes,

Neil

Re: Adding NetBeans sources as NetBeans platform

2019-10-22 Thread Boris Heithecker
Yes, the strange think is, if I build a zip ("ant build") and extract it, I
can add it as a platform without problem.
But, as I said, adding the nbbuild/netbeans directly causes problems. The
folder is recognized as a platform and I can add it as a NetBeans platform,
but the modules list is either empty or contains only one single module
"RCP Platform".
This is inconvenient because I want to compile a platform application
against my own fork of the platform which I'm adapting at the same time. I
don't want to zip and extract every time I make a slight change to the
platform sources.
My guess is that the ant target "zip-cluster-config" causes the magic that
make the IDE recognize the modules, because this is what is called in
addition to "build-nozip".
I'm going to file an issue tonight.
Boris

The steps to do this are outlined here:
 https://blogs.oracle.com/geertjan/netbeans-sources-as-a-platform
Step 2 is the problem: although the IDE doesn't fail to register the
platform (both are 11.2-vc1), the platform has only one module (in the
"Modules" tab), which is "RCP Platform".

 Should I file an issue?

Just open the module you want to work with. Work on it. Run it. It
 will run on your build.

Re: Adding NetBeans sources as NetBeans platform

2019-10-22 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Are you able to register another NetBeans IDE as a NetBeans Platform
without a problem -- is it only when you try to register your own build of
the sources?

Just trying to identify where the problem might be.

Re registering a NetBeans Platform, can you try to reproduce in 11.2
 vc1?

 Hi all,
in NetBeans 11.1 IDE, I can't add the sources (nbbuild/netbeans) as
 a
NetBeans platform. The build folder is recognized as a platform,
 but after
running ant build-nozip only a small and varying number of modules
 is
detected - sometimes one, sometime none at all. Is there anything I
 need to
 know?
