AW: Where we are and where we are going with Apache NetBeans 9.0

2018-05-29 Thread Christian Lenz
What does vc mean? Vote candidate? I know the „Problem“ behind the vote, but if
we make fixes or whatever, we have a new build, with a new build number so the
vote was for rc1-20180303 or the build number rc1-143. If the vote fails, we
make some stuff like fixes or whatever and we have a new build so rc1-20180304
or rc1-144 or whatever. So you are still counting numbers but rc is confusing
and vc yeah could be but it is not my personal favorite. It is not concrete
enough. IMHO.

But please understand what this is about — when we go through the voting
process in Apache, the vote may fail, which has happened several times and
then we need to make fixes, produce a new release, and start the voting
process again.

The question is how to distinguish between these vote candidates, I propose
vc1, vc2, vc3, etc.

What do you think?

[Mentors] ‘incubating’ in splash screen?

2018-05-29 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Mentors,

Please help. What should we display on the splash screen and About box:

Apache NetBeans IDE 9.0

Apache NetBeans IDE (incubating) 9.0

Which of the above should be on the splash screen and About box?

Thanks,

Gj

If we are not required to use it as part of the name (just required to be
visible in the artifacts name), we should not use it on the splash screen
or anywhere else in the branding.

My major concern is - is it required?

+1 for mentioning Apache...

Re: NB 9.0 Splash Screen

2018-05-29 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
I don’t think we have a choice about including ‘incubating’. No one using
NetBeans is outside of the Apache world. And that is part of our name until
we leave the incubator.

The name on the splash screen should be:

Apache NetBeans IDE (incubating) 9.0

Can you ask David to change that and resend it?

Thanks,

Gj

better? https://github.com/AlexFalappa/nb-springboot

I know it is not part of the core but this Plugin is used often and there are
some issues open. So try to make PRs to this Project, if you want 😊. I thought
on this Plugin, because you said you are working with spring.

I'm a Java software engineer from 5 years and this is my first approach to
a free software project. I have experience in Java EE and Spring
technologies.

Netbeans was my first IDE and helped me a lot to achieve the goals of the
project. I would like Netbeans to be used by more people.

I have seen a lot of components in the JIRA project. I'm not sure where to
start.

Thanks.

you download the nightly, there is a Long number in the titlebar, I think it
was the date like NetBeans 9.0-dev-20180101 or smth like that. So why not using
beta-20180303 and for RC too? So everyone knows, that this rc is the latest
build or is 3 days old.

My 2 cents

I don’t like the rc1-rc1 bit. I think once one knows the reason it exists, they
can understand it, but a release candidate for a release candidate, is just
hard to say with a straight face IMO. I prefer the rc1-vc1 bit myself. Either
way, I think folks will ask what it means, but at least the words for the
shorthand match exactly what it is; voting candidate for a release candidate
versus RC for an RC. My couple pennies.

AW: NB 9.0 Splash Screen

2018-05-29 Thread Christian Lenz
Of Course, it should be Apache NetBeans DIE but I think we don’t Need to make
the Apache so proiminent. As you can see the new proposal, where Apache is
above NetBeans. And -1 for incubating, but this is only my personal opinion. I
know that this is still an incubating Project, but no one cares outside of the
Apache world for this. They see NetBeans is an Apache Project. IMHO

It should indeed be Apache NetBeans IDE, followed by the release number,
i.e., 9.0.

However, should "incubating" also be included, i.e., it would then be
Apache NetBeans IDE (incubating) 9.0.

We need to get this sorted so we can prepare the final release candidate.

Gj

+1 to include "incubating".

Re: Keeping the DNS in netbeans.org domain was: Upload Maven bits

2018-05-29 Thread Emilian Bold
Of course this should be done in an orderly fashion. Not sure once Apache gets
the domain if they will agree to this, particularly hg.netbeans.org since that
will be like hosting / distributing source code they don't own and somebody
will certainly rush to veto this.

I think there are a whole bunch of domains and URLs(!) that would be a shame
not to have an orderly migration. Google ranking and general discoverability is
going to be terrible if we just drop these domains from the Internet.

I remember a while back I wanted to start an 'Archival Project' to preserve
most of what's right now online, but I saw little feedback from the Oracle side
on getting access to the data (for example, a bugzilla database dump) and I
don't feel like scrapping the whole website myself. Bugzilla of course, also
has a ton of historical, contextual knowledge that will be terrible if it goes
away -- commits and comments routinely reference bugzilla and much of the meat
of understanding what happened is in the bugzilla comments.

Re: Where we are and where we are going with Apache NetBeans 9.0

2018-05-29 Thread Wade Chandler
I don’t like the rc1-rc1 bit. I think once one knows the reason it exists, they
can understand it, but a release candidate for a release candidate, is just
hard to say with a straight face IMO. I prefer the rc1-vc1 bit myself. Either
way, I think folks will ask what it means, but at least the words for the
shorthand match exactly what it is; voting candidate for a release candidate
versus RC for an RC. My couple pennies.

Re: Contribute to the project

My name is Toni,

I'm a Java software engineer from 5 years and this is my first approach to
a free software project. I have experience in Java EE and Spring
technologies.

Netbeans was my first IDE and helped me a lot to achieve the goals of the
project. I would like Netbeans to be used by more people.

I have seen a lot of components in the JIRA project. I'm not sure where to
start.

Thanks.

There may be a need to vote multiple times, though we’re getting better at

Anyway, I propose we use the shortened names rc2-vc1, rc2-vc2, rc2-vc3,

Apache Derby would be another one.

For the "add drivers" part it might be worth looking at the PR, that
removed MySQL:

https://github.com/apache/incubator-netbeans/pull/294

The changes that were done in db.drivers would need to be reversed for
adding drivers.

I have been doing Gentoo ebuilds for over a decade. I can crank some
stuff out pretty quickly. I also re-did pretty much all of Java on
Gentoo to make packaging anything Java related less cumbersome. I was
pretty well versed and system re-designed when I took on Netbeans
packaging my way. Using the stuff I have been working on for sometime.

Though others said my effort for updating Java on Gentoo was seemingly
impossible. What is impossible for some is feasible for others :)

> Most modules will be pretty simple

The modules were pretty simple to package. That is also a testament to
consistent project structure for all sub projects. With a few
deviations here and there. For the amount of ebuilds, Netbeans was less
effort to package than other stuff with far less sub projects/modules.

Good work to all current and past Netbeans Developers!!!
Their good work is in part what saved me time. Much appreciated!!!

Hard to say, but likely switching to say Maven or Gradle would be more
work than it took me using Portage on Gentoo + my stuff. Then again my
stuff was a long time in the making ~2yrs. Had it not been for all that.
It would have likely taken more to package Netbeans or any Java package.

Still problems editing Java code with NB 9.0

2018-05-29 Thread Peter Nabbefeld

Hello,

while RC1 is on its way to be released, I still get exceptions when
typing some erroneous construct into the Java editor. E.g. I like to
type the following:

for (file:files) ...

"files" here is a collection, and I like to use the hint to supply the
type of "file" from the collection.

Well, writing the type in front of the name isn't so much work, but I
don't like those exceptions to be thrown. And there're others, too.

Kind regards
Peter

Other JDBC drivers which could be included, with Apache-compatible licenses:
* Microsoft SQL Server: https://github.com/Microsoft/mssql-jdbc/tree/v6.5.2
* SQLite: https://github.com/xerial/sqlite-jdbc/tree/3.23.1

The MySQL/MariaDB ones are GPL/LGPL and so can’t be bundled, unfortunately. I’d
still say it would be worth bundling PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and SQLite.

I'm not sure when I'll have time to look at this. I doubt, that it will
make it into Netbeans 9.0. I opened NETBEANS-870 to track this:

needs to be done:
- get an updated driver
- check the license
- update the db.drivers module with the new binary and updated license

If anyone wants to do it, I'll review.

I'd like to work on this. I'll have lots of questions, but I want to
learn the NetBeans internals. I'm studying "NetBeans Platform for

I had a look at NETBEANS-170 (referenced by 870):

Where we are and where we are going with Apache NetBeans 9.0

2018-05-29 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
Hi all,

Major development today, with thanks to many people for working on the
release and Emilian for putting it together, we have released the rc1 of
Apache NetBeans IDE (incubating) 9.0.

My thoughts on the current status are here in the Apache NetBeans blog:

https://blogs.apache.org/netbeans/entry/announce-apache-netbeans-incubating-91

The cadence of our releases is going to speed up significantly, I believe,
and we could look at doing a minor release every 2 months with a major
release every 6 months, for example. Right now everything is as slow as
sludge since we're getting started with the whole process, though we're
getting better at it all the time.

Please read the blog entry above to orientate yourself around where we are
and what the requirements are from this point onwards, feel free to ask
questions, and we can update that blog entry accordingly.

Thanks,

I'd like to work on this. I'll have lots of questions, but I want to
learn the NetBeans internals. I'm studying "NetBeans Platform for
Beginners" and the API docs on netbeans.org.

I had a look at NETBEANS-170 (referenced by 870):

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-170

If Postgres is the last driver still bundled with NetBeans, are the
above steps even worth the effort?

Re: NB 9.0 Splash Screen

2018-05-29 Thread Geertjan Wielenga
It should indeed be Apache NetBeans IDE, followed by the release number,
i.e., 9.0.

However, should "incubating" also be included, i.e., it would then be
Apache NetBeans IDE (incubating) 9.0.

We need to get this sorted so we can prepare the final release candidate.

Thanks,

Gj

Keeping the DNS in netbeans.org domain was: Upload Maven bits

2018-05-29 Thread Jaroslav Tulach
Hello Emilian,
I'd even argue that once netbeans.org domain gets transfered to Apache, it
is important (for the smoothness of migration) to keep DNS names of certain
IP addresses. For example

hg.netbeans.org
wiki.netbeans.org

shall in my opinion continue to work and point to the same machines, while
they are on. This shall not be done to save Apache any resources - all new
development of Apache NetBeans shall use Apache infrastructure, but these
old machines contain a lot of knowledge and keeping their DNS records helps
us to transfer the important parts of wisdom in an incremental fashion to
the proper Apache infrastructure.
