Taher Alkhateeb commented on OFBIZ-6274:

Thanks to Deepak for committing his work in r1752920 we have now fully
converted all artifacts from org.ofbiz to org.apache.ofbiz

However, we have a regression that we did not catch the first time (fooled us).
The tests are unstable. Sometimes they all pass, and sometimes they crash
randomly (I observed 6, 14, and 58 tests crashing at different points).

This is probably a minor issue somewhere, but is difficult to track down
because the tests fail randomly and so it is hard to tell exactly where the
source of the trouble is. Under investigation at the moment.

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Pierre Smits
Hi Taher,

You said: 'You can run the system by typing java -cp build/libs/jarname.jar
org.apache.ofbiz.base.start.Start or running the jar directly.

I tried:

java -cp build/libs/ofbiz-gradle.jar org.apache.ofbiz.base.start.Start

I guess that 'ofbiz-gradle.jar' is the 'jarname.jar' you mentioned.

But that resulted in:

Error: Could not find or load main class org.apache.ofbiz.base.start.Start

Best regards,

Pierre Smits

I see no reasons to not already clean the data files from useless data,
readability will improve. Then we should not add new data fields in data files
even if we changes things in data model, and even if we do the files will be
better then.

OK Pierre, I saw your exchange with Taher on dev ML, please reopen this issue

Thanks to [~taher] I was able to find the jar:

The pom file is in another subdirectory:

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Pierre Smits
Thanks.

In a wadload of postgresql jars found I got:

./Users/pierre/.gradle/caches/modules-2/files-2.1/postgresql/postgresql/9.0-801.jdbc4/153f2f92a786f12fc111d0111f709012df87c808/postgresql-9.0-801.jdbc4.jar

So that adds to the traceability issue I have. A pom in one folder and a
jar in another, no apparent relation and no logging. More digging to do. :(

Best regards,

Pierre Smits

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Pierre Smits
Hmm.

It seems I overlooked that it was a directory.

This is what I have in the directory:

Pierres-MacBook-Pro:files-2.1 pierre$ ls
./caches/modules-2/files-2/postgresql/postgresql/9.0-801.jdbc4/58952dea25c6251a7666d8eea01e4a31da0f8cf7

postgresql-9.0-801.jdbc4.pom

And the pom file contains:

  4.0.0

  postgresql

  postgresql

  jar

  PostgreSQL JDBC Driver

  9.0-801.jdbc4

  http://jdbc.postgresql.org

  The PostgreSQL Driver JDBC4

  BSD License

  http://jdbc.postgresql.org/license.html

  repo

I am yet to find the actual jar on my Mac.

Hi Pierre,

The jar name is there, what is hashed is the directory name. For example
the postgresql jar on my computer is

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Pierre Smits
Taher,

Have a look at:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OFBIZ-7783?focusedCommentId=15380747&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-15380747

It appears that the build proces doesn't only copy the jars, but also
transforms them. The files stored aren't recognisable. Not by their type
nor by name.

Ohh. I forgot to mention some other requirements:

- The 3rd party libraries must reside within the application
- Auditors must be able to track the origin of 3rd party libraries
residing in applications

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Pierre Smits
Hi Taher,

Jacques already implemented a change to the rc scripts in the tools folder,
but that works through the gradle build proces. And building is something
that isn't allowed on production servers. In order to meet SLAs they are
optimized to maximum uptime and maximum performance.

 Hi Taher,

 Thanks for your quick response.

The reason why this is needed is because I am limited in my options in
hardened servers in production environments, as a result of GRC policies
 and procedures.
 This entails (amongst others):

- no ports open than those that are required to access the server
environment (ssh) or the application (in the case of OFBiz: the
 designated
ajp port.
- no manual starting of stopping of services other than through
services (rc scripts) and chron jobs
- no downloading of software etc from within the server
- no build processes allowed on application servers when the reside
in the production environment.

I trust that answers your question.

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Pierre Smits
Taher,

Deployment is very controlled process/procedure bound by constraints, so
the deployment process must bring all required elements together in to
something that can be deployed. In OFBiz terminology the convenience
package or binary release.

In this deployment process this also means that everything not needed in
the production environment must be removed:

   - java source code
   - build definition files
   - the OFBiz data sets
   - etc

Re: OFBiz & Gradle building OFBiz

2016-07-16 Thread Taher Alkhateeb
Hi Pierre,

Okay I'll try to answer and provide as much relevant information as I can.

- So first, the system currently does create a jar file in /build/libs. The
name of the jar is the name of the project (currently defaulting to the
folder name). You can run the system by typing java -cp
build/libs/jarname.jar org.apache.ofbiz.base.start.Start or running the jar
directly.
- However, it is better to avoid using the jar file directly. Because
Gradle is a full programming language + DSL and is therefore a fundamental
part of the framework solution. Your best bet is to talk to OFBiz always
through Gradle and avoid using it directly.
- H, the point about not downloading the libraries is a little
challenging. Maybe one solution is to copy your $HOME/.gradle directory to
the production environment which contains all the dependencies. But anytime
you make a dependency change then you need to copy it again.
- the rc scripts are really nothing but bash scripts that call your java
-jar under the hood right? So the solution very simply is to change the rc
scripts to call gradle instead. This is one of the tasks for a WIP of
fixing everything in /tools.

Does that help? any other logistical problems? BTW this is very good
feedback we need that kind of stuff for deployment fine-tuning. I heard
others ask similar questions.

Regards,

Taher Alkhateeb

Hello Everyone,

As you already know, we have been doing major work in terms of improving
and refactoring the framework. We are buzzing and making changes everywhere
and people are getting excited about helping out. This is fantastic! and I
hope we can continue in this new direction.

However, before we started the refactoring work, I kept wondering why did
we get here in the first place? We do we have lots of bad and messy code in
the code base? Why are we at point where we are shifting all energies to
cleaning up?

So as I started working with people on the refactoring project and the
answers to the above questions started to slowly appear. I list below my
perception of the problems and recommendations for avoiding repeating these
problems of bad code.

Problem: We are very conservative
--

How many times did you hear this: "Don't remove that, somebody might need
it" or "Oh no, you just made a regression in trunk" or "No keep it, _one_
person X objected".

You know ... making software is difficult. It involves taking many
decisions, some of these decisions might not appeal to every person but
they are necessary for the health of the project.

So here is where I observed conservative behavior:

- We are too sensitive to objections that even _one_ person might stop an
initiative. In a way we might be a little too nice.
- We treat trunk like it is almost a stable branch, and for any serious
change we immediately prefer to create branches.
- We _rarely_ remove anything, and when we suggest removing things big
resistance happens. We suffer from "code hoarding"
- We are shy about changing other people's code. Shy not because we don't
know what to do, but we are concerned about making those who wrote the
software displeased.
- We treat code written by others like it is holy and difficult and we
cannot repeat, when in fact many times we can make it actually _better_!

The above observations in my opinion are the main reasons why we have bad
code. We just pile up and we are so afraid of change. We don't change
anything and the code as a result suffers and deteriorates. We just pile
things on top of other things and do not revisit the design and try to make
it better and cleaner. Sometimes revisiting the design involves _DELETING_
which is a strange word in our community :)

Recommendation: Shifting our mindset
---

At a high level, we can say our problem is fear! How do we reduce and
control fear? How do we gain confidence about making change without too
much pain? Luckily many smart people already thought about these things and
came up with wonderful solutions. I list hear recommendations which are
inspired by these thinkers:

- First we must be aware that we are conservative and accept it. We should
be conscious of how apprehensive we are about change
- We should have a very strong test coverage of our code and we should
exercise Test Driver Development as a core philosophy in our programming
methodology. Having very well tested code gives you confidence. Confidence
gives you courage to change.
- We should accept trunk as an _unstable software_. It is a place where all
the brain storming and thinking and innovation is happening.
- We should be open in expressing our opinions. Being correct is better
than being nice. Mind you I'm not encouraging conflict! I am instead
encouraging good technical discussions that lead to useful outcomes. It is
only when people challenge your technical opinion that you really expand
your horizons and learn something
- For me personally, I think most importantly, we should accept _REMOVING_
and _DELETING_ things. This is a natural phenomenon in all software
systems. Sometimes we create something and realize later that it was a bad
idea. Just Delete it!! Don't keep it hanging forever.

In conclusion
-

So OFBiz has a wonderful community and great people. However we are overly
conservative, and we need to be a little more brave and willing to embrace
change. Yes this will lead to some friction and at times feeling lost, but
the long-term benefits far far outweigh the losses in my opinion.

What do you think? I would love to hear everyone's opinion on this, and
thank you again for being such supportive and wonderful

Hi Taher,

Thanks for your quick response.

The reason why this is needed is because I am limited in my options in
hardened servers in production environments, as a result of GRC policies

This entails (amongst others):

   - no ports open than those that are required to access the server

Jacques Le Roux commented on OFBIZ-6302:

I compared the 2 ViewCertificate.ftl, they are almost the same. At least 1 will
be gone. I made a small mistake in my patch (added commons-safe-head.ftl which
is a long pending and should not be there). Anyway, I was ready to commit when
we got issues in BuildBot, HM team is investigating...

> - Add CRUD services using entity-auto. Make sure PK is not optional while

> - Do related changes if any occurrence found for direct create/update/delete
> of this entity, and replace them with crud services implemented.
> - As no status/from date/thru date exists in entity, so nothing needs to be
> taken care while deleting the records from service.
