Is this feature existing or is
a new feature (need to be

You mean the page footer, I
 assume. Projects are
 software projects,
 like Apache OpenOffice and
 the Apache Web (HTTPD)

 Projects are internal
 organization-wide structures
 (conference
 organization, legal affairs,
 apache.org servers

 internal are projects,
 that do not deliver a
 product in form of releases
 available to
 people/organisations outside
 ASF. E.g. legal affairs give
 advice to all projects,
 Infrastructure maintain our
 server farms.

 You can contribute to both
 projects and foundation
 projects. f.x. I am
 committer here in AOO and
 Infra.

Re: Can we do this email thing (whatever it is called)?

2013-09-17 Thread Siva
we don't have a specific name but we better call that umbrella of features as
 Open Office Tips Tricks.

On September 17, 2013 at 12:48 PM Rob Weir robw...@apache.org wrote:

When I purchase a commercial software package I register and then I am
sometimes offered a weekly tips email. It covers tips on how to use
the product, how to get support, FAQs, etc. It is very useful for new
 users.

But this is not a typical announcement list thing. Users don't all
get the same email each week. But everyone who is new gets the week
0 email, and a week later they would get the week 2 email, while
someone else in that same week who is new gets the week 0 email, etc.

Is this clear? It is sort of a system where the user gets a
programmed set of emails on a schedule.

Does anyone know what this is called? And are there open source
products or free services that support this?

I think this could be very useful for new OpenOffice users. Currently
we give them a huge torrent of information on the download page, and
in release notes. I doubt more than 5% of the information gets
absorbed because it it is too much. But if we could do it via weekly
tip emails, then it we'd probably get more information across.

Another approach would be via a feed that is loaded by AOO itself at
first load. Many products have something like that, a tips dialog
that gives a new tip every time the product starts, or once a week or
 something.

Re: [PROPOSAL] Admin mailing list

2013-09-16 Thread Siva
Hope I could do this job but have a little expertise with moderation.
Probably Listing down what are the jobs to do would be good.

I'd like to propose a new mailing list: ad...@openoffice.apache.org

It would serve a few primary purposes:

  1) A focused mailing list to help our volunteer admins coordinate
maintenance of our project infrastructure, or at least that portion of
  it maintained by the project.

  2) It would give a single point of contact for admin-related
questions, outage reports and requests from project members or the
  public.

  3) It would allow other parties interested in monitoring our admin
discussion, say Infra@ members, to follow a more focused list.

If this idea sounds good, we'd need the usual set of 3 or so
  moderators, geographically disbursed.

The proposal has been out for 8 days now. Mostly +1's, though there
was the suggestion that we wait until there is an organized
admin-team. But then I pointed out that this is not only for
sysadmins, but admins of other systems like Bugzilla, mailing list
admins, as well as being the list for incoming reports from the
public. My impression was that satisfied any concerns.

To move this forward now I will need some list moderator volunteers
for the new list. If you can help moderate, please respond with your
 preferred moderator email address.

Note: I'd like us to keep the admin on-topic. So if moderators
receive emails asking product support questions, I'd expect them to be
rejected, with a note pointing the user to the forums and/or the user
 mailing list.

 -Rob
