[OSM-dev] [nominatim] Will it complete sometime?

2011-06-27 Thread Günter Dressel

Hi guys,

we are running nominatim (rev. 25615) since a couple month now.
Our PostGIS Database reached the 2 Terabyte mark at beginning of may 2011.
Still level 30 gets processed, and in the last weeks we couldn't monitor any
valuable changes at the database.

How big will the database grow? How big is yours?
How long shall we sit and wait? When would you beginn to look for some kind of
a bug in nominatim?
Postgres (we think) is configured to handle big loads.
Seems it to you, that our system configuration mixed up? Tough we got plenty of
RAM and couple of CPU cores...

Regards,
Günter

There is a "geocoding" mailing list which might be better suited to
questions that regard running Nominatim; but the list has such low
volume that I had zero responses to a similar question I asked there a
while ago ;)

2 TB is certainly more than *my* Nominatim instances need (see
http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/geocoding/2011-May/000194.html).

Didn't knew that. Just subscribed :)

Your tables show different sizes. Totally different :)
Which version of nominamtim are you running?
How long had your computer to run to build that database?
Did you complete the nominatim run?

Just learned that tirex has WMS capabilities.

Recently the same question was asked on the german devserver list:

The answer was like "Tirex is able to handle 1.1.1 just as most WMS
servers, so there's not much sense in impementing 1.3.0.

But I guess if you provide a patch that extends the support to both
versions, it would be welcome.

Maybe. I have the problem and I posted a URL where a debian user reported the
same bug.

If you have a /usr/share/default.style, then you placed it there on your own.
This definetly is not the right place for this file. It should be located below
/usr/share/osm2pgsql and the binary should read it from there without needing
the -S switch.

The bug even already existed on trac. I just had to add my patch there.

Version we install through apt-get install osm2pgsql is old than the
source available to compilation If I am not wrong.

Doesn't change anything. I had a look at the SVN server and the Makefile.am,
available there, still has the bug described here.

There is one thing, I don't understand: Why does noone seem to be interested in
this bug? It's a simple change. Two patches exists. One older version and the
new version, I've attached.

Is one of the developers of osm2pgsql reading this mailing list?

Well, the developers on this list are very much bound by there own
projects and there is no maintainer of osm2pgsql, so no body feels
responsible for it.

developer, maybe, but there is no maintainer.

I'll apply the patch as soon as svn is working again.

[OSM-dev] Problem with tirex

Cannot open master UNIX domain socket: No such file or directory

the following does not work either (found this in Peter Körner's
tutorial), probably because there is no script for tirex-master in
/etc/init.d :
$ /etc/init.d/tirex-master restart

$ which tirex-master
/usr/bin/tirex-master

Anyone have a clue what might be the reason for "Cannot open master
UNIX domain socket: No such file or directory" ?

[Potlatch-dev] [OpenStreetMap] #3869: Polygon name (label) placement is too random

#3869: Polygon name (label) placement is too random

 I've been long struggling with
 [http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/118596170 this (118596170)
polygon]'s label - I was not being able to find it displayed on map, until
I've noticed it being incorrectly placed a few hundred meters to the side.
(The object is a simple 6-point polygon approx. 6 meter long - a tourism
 attraction.)

Create a 2x2 meter large 4 point polygon, tag and name it appropriately
 (e.g. {{{amenity=school}}}, {{{name="School placed on our street"}}}). The
label will be most probably not 'visible' (zoom out might be necessary to
locate it). Move around the corner points by ± few pixels - the label will
erratically jump around in up to multiple hundred meter steps.

I understand that if a label is much larger than its objects, it is
impossible to place it inside. But why not over the object or tightly near
 it???

Re: [OSM-dev] Problem with tirex

2011-06-27 Thread Jochen Topf
Look into your tirex.conf. There is a line
# Directory where UNIX domain sockets are created
#socket_dir=/var/run/tirex

That directory must exist and tirex must have the right to write
in it.
