An astonishingly large proportion of people go through a phase of promoting

the most common computer-related subjects of this kind of fixation.

I did it, because just recently have met a guy, who was insisting that
it is better because this and that. I'm not a specialist to judge the
quality of any WM by browsing its code. So I hoped that ppl on the
mailing list do have enough competence and patience to deal with this
kind of easy and naive question.

Though the question was pretty meaningless. We get questions like this
a lot: "how is better or worse than dwm?" Let me put it this way:
do you need runtime configuration, Xft, EMWH, Imlib2, and a systray? I
don't, and I use tagging, so I think it's worse. What should I say,
"it's worse because it's bloated and lacks tagging"? Clearly you
disagree. So why not try the window manager and find out for yourself
how it is better or worse for you?

Re: [dev] revolution

2011-06-10 Thread Bryan Bennett
Kurt - I think you need to rethink your definition of "Troll". He simply
asked a question. Regardless of whether you agree with the idea of the
window manager in question, he didn't make some fallacious statement
regarding DWM or any other suckless tools - he's simply asking for
opinions. There is a sizable minority of DWM users (myself included)
that use DWM's tags as workspaces. Yes, it's 'wrong' in regards to
how the window manager is INTENDED to be used - but that's what's
nice about *MY* computer - it's mine and I can use what software I
want as I see fit. Not everyone *NEEDS* to the 'dynamic' from
'dynamic window manager' . I know I don't - I prefer DWM over any
other window manager for other reasons besides the concept of tagging.

No one implied that WMFS was anything 'special' - but rather that it
took some ideas from DWM and changed them up a bit. It sits on a
middle ground between dynamic tiling window managers and a
lightweight floating WM. (Honestly, look at it like a tiling openbox and
you'll get a better idea of it's capabilities)

Re: [dev] revolution

2011-06-10 Thread Kurt H Maier
Why are you people falling for this troll? WMFS has nothing to do
with dwm, it's just another tiling static window manager. From its
website:

" * A Tag is actually a workspace. "

Witthout dwm's tagging concept, there is nothing special here. You
can identify such window managers by their EWMH compliance. EWMH
requirements are incompatible with true tagging, and tagging is the
concept that puts the 'dynamic' in 'dynamic window manager'.

Re: [dev] revolution

2011-06-10 Thread Bryan Bennett
WMFS simply feels like DWM++, which is an unpopular concept
in these parts I honestly liked it quite a bit. It takes DWM's window
management concepts and tacks on some convenience features that
are nice to have, but not essential. It DOES have a systray, but it
was useless for me (as I'm used to DWM's ways) but the simple fact
that it has a full config file was nice. I didn't stick with it as it didn't
have the layouts I wanted though.
