I defer to fellow Tika devs on this one. Perhaps
[~sergey_beryozkin]/[~sergeyb] has worked with https on CXF?

This is dated, but might be relevant to what we need to do:
https://arul.dev/2008/07/26/programming-ssl-for-jetty-based-cxf-services/

There's way too much hard coding in that example. I hope that there is an
easier way.

I managed to get it working with https by using this example under "Configuring
[HTTP/2|https://http2.github.io/] over
[TLS":|https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_Layer_Security]

[https://www.javacodegeeks.com/2022/01/so-you-want-to-expose-your-jax-rs-services-over-http-2.html]

{code:java}
String url = "https://"; + host + ":" + port + "/";
KeyStoreType keystore = new KeyStoreType();
keystore.setType("JKS");
keystore.setPassword("1");
keystore.setResource("keystore.jks");
KeyManagersType kmt = new KeyManagersType();
kmt.setKeyStore(keystore);
kmt.setKeyPassword("1");
TLSServerParameters parameters = new TLSServerParameters();
parameters.setKeyManagers(TLSParameterJaxBUtils.getKeyManagers(kmt));
JettyHTTPServerEngineFactory factory = new JettyHTTPServerEngineFactory();
sf.setAddress(url);
sf.setResourceComparator(new ProduceTypeResourceComparator());

factory.setBus(sf.getBus());
BindingFactoryManager manager =
sf.getBus().getExtension(BindingFactoryManager.class);
factory.setTLSServerParametersForPort(host, port, parameters);
JAXRSServerFactoryCustomizationUtils.customize(sf); {code}

I changed the above code in TikaServerProcess and managed to spawn a https
Jetty Server, hopefully that might be of some use to you guys?

Yes, yes, and more yes! Thank you!

How can we parameterize this? Or, I can figure out the mechanism, what
parameters do we want to make settable/configurable?

Dan Coldrick commented on TIKA-3719:

Hi [~tallison]

I'm far from being a java developer so not sure how much further I can help but
how about adding some parameter to the xml config file? Something like:
{code:java}

                true
                JKS
                1
                c:/temp/keystore.jks
                JKS
                1
                c:/temp/keystore.jks

{code}
Also holding keystore passwords in clear text doesn't feel right to me so might
have to do something around encrypting them somehow.

Next step would also to add some Authorization (Basic Auth would be a good
start :) ) to the server but maybe that would be a separate feature? Would that
be worthwhile raising?

Hi [~tallison]

Yes that sounds like a great idea, think it should be optional where it's
either hard coded in the config or with the ability to get it from an
Environment variable.

Any thoughts about adding Authorization? Separate JIRA? Personally would be
really good to get to a stage where tika server can be a fully hosted rest
service with Auth and some security around it.

I'd be interested in learning more about your use case if you're able to share.
 I've generally used tika-server on trusted networks docker/k8s or otherwise
restricted networks.

Do you really want to host tika semi-publicly and rely on auth? Make sure not
to use {{--noFork}}! :D See points about dangers of parsing files here:

Also, be aware that various parsers and Tika itself often write temp files from
the input data or portions of the input data, so you're relying on Java's temp
file capability to prevent reads/writes of other people's data on your server.
Is this safe for multi-tenant? I frankly don't know, but it does raise an
eyebrow for me.

Hi [~tallison]

Unfortunately I probably can't share our full use case :(

What I can say is it won't be public facing but our security guys will pickup
that TIKA server isn't https/doesn't have any authorization around it. We have
been using tika server for the last 2 years with a .net wrapper round it
(basically the .net wrapper spawns tika server and passes it files to process
with some extra logic around dwg files).

I've just pushed an initial attempt on the TIKA-3719 branch. That does not
include password protecting passwords and it does not do anything with the
truststore info.

To build it somewhat faster than a full build: mvn clean install -pl -am
:tika-server-standard

An example config file is here:

For testing it, I'd be tempted to create a self-signed certificate for
localhost valid for eg 30 years, with a well known password, and pop that into
test/resources. Then have a test that starts the server passing in that,
verifies it starts and does a call without error with all the ssl validation
(eg untrusted) turned off. Likely to be simpler than doing it "properly" with a
test CA issuing a test cert and a test verifying the cert with the CA.

Happy to create such a keystore if it'd help, it'd pretty similar to what you
need to do for Alfresco+SOLR so I've got notes somewhere on that!

Those look like the steps needed. I'd suggest we create ours as something like

{{{color:#445588}keytool{color}{color:#00} -genkeypair -alias
tika-ssl-testing -keyalg RSA -keysize 2048 -keypass tika-secret -storepass
tika-secret -validity  -keystore test-ssl.keystore.p12 -storetype PKCS12
-ext SAN=DNS:localhost,IP:127.0.0.1 -dname "CN=localhost, OU=Tika
Testing"{color}}}

That will create a PKCS12 formatted keystore with a self-signed key+cert,
password of tika-secret, which can then be loaded for a test server{{{}{}}}

If I ignore the trust manager the server starts. I'll do some digging around

I could get it working with my .pfx which is a pkcs12. I used powershell to
generate it, again if the command is of any use here it is:

New-SelfSignedCertificate -CertStoreLocation Cert:\LocalMachine\My -DnsName
"localhost" -FriendlyName "localhost" -NotAfter (Get-Date).AddYears(10)

I could then export it from windows certificate store to put in the jks I
attached.

Unit test is here:

the keystores and truststores are here:

The steps I took to create those (and credit to Bhashinee Nirmali) are here:

Still left to do is to inject the password's password as a system variable.
Let's open a separate ticket for that.

[~monkmachine], if you're able to get this working enough for your needs, I'll
merge it into main.

PDFBox is now available, and I'm eager to start our release process asap.

Ok Tim, will get it checked over and let you know in the next day or so if
that's ok. Many thanks for your effort, very much appreciated.

I'll open a separate ticket for the Key Store passwords as well :)

Thanks again :) (*)

I added configuration for client authentication wanted/required and a unit
test. This confirms that one way and two way tls work.

   Thanks for your contribution to [Apache Tika](https://tika.apache.org/)!
Your help is appreciated!

   Before opening the pull request, please verify that
   * there is an open issue on the [Tika issue
tracker](https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/TIKA) which describes the
problem or the improvement. We cannot accept pull requests without an issue
because the change wouldn't be listed in the release notes.
   * the issue ID (`TIKA-`)
 - is referenced in the title of the pull request
 - and placed in front of your commit messages surrounded by square
brackets (`[TIKA-] Issue or pull request title`)
   * commits are squashed into a single one (or few commits for larger changes)
   * Tika is successfully built and unit tests pass by running `mvn clean test`
   * there should be no conflicts when merging the pull request branch into the
*recent* `main` branch. If there are conflicts, please try to rebase the pull
request branch on top of a freshly pulled `main` branch
   * if you add new module that downstream users will depend upon add it to
relevant group in `tika-bom/pom.xml`.

   We will be able to faster integrate your pull request if these conditions
are met. If you have any questions how to fix your problem or about using Tika
in general, please sign up for the [Tika mailing
list](http://tika.apache.org/mail-lists.html). Thanks!

Stubbing toe now on this, [~tilman]. Again my apologies.

Separate topic. I'd like to log a warning that this capability is in BETA and
the configuration of it might change in future releases. I want us to have the
wiggle room to use the native cxf.xml instead of our hand-coded configuration
going forward if that turns out to be a possibility. The more we can offload
to cxf, the better.

[~monkmachine], what's your user name on confluence? We're happy to grant
write access.

Are you ok w BETA status? If we find out from cxf team, that users can
configure tls and/or auth via the cxf.xml file, then I'd really like to offload
that and remove the code we just added.

Hi [~tallison]

Yes happy with beta, be really good if the CXF guys can have a review (which
looks like they are going to) and extend to take cxf.xml files with all that
entails. Honestly can't thank you enough for the help you've provided. :)

Also is it possible to link to confluence from the main tika page and make it
stand out more? Confluence has a lot more detail than the main tika page which
I've always found to be more useful (might also help I'm a massive fan of
confluence)

Y, I'll do that when I update the page after the releases. Any chance you can
open a separate ticket to track that?
