Re: Welcome Ted Dunning to the ZooKeeper PMC!

2011-05-26 Thread Ted Dunning
Readers of this list probably know me more than they would like. But I have
been a rabid proponent of Zookeeper ever since I saw Ben give his first
public talk on the subject. I still remember that during that talk I kept
thinking to myself that the ZK approach was hitting a fabulous balance of
simplicity and power. Since that talk, I haven't looked back and have
included Zookeeper in a number of projects of my own and pushed others
(sometimes even successfully) to use it as well.

The only beef I have about Zookeeper is that it is very hard to find ways to
contribute. The issues of usability and correctness are subtle and many
possible additions are actually subtractions. In addition, the Zookeeper
community has done a brilliant job of identifying a tremendously powerful
abstraction that meets a critical need without allowing mission creep to
settle in. That is an incredibly hard and rare thing to do.
