Hi!

Was curious on how you can display ads on a Firefox OS Privileged app?
Theoretically when a user taps on an ad, it should invoke the browser.

Wrap the ad into an anchor tag . And
install an handler to invoke a web activity to open the browser with the content of href attribute.

Hope it helps!

Any tips or guide on how to do it? Would appreciate such feedback.

Thanks!

[b2g] Building Firefox OS for Beagleboard

2013-07-25 Thread nikarul
Hello,

I'm investigating the possibility of building Firefox OS for my Beagleboard-xm
with touchscreen interface, and I'm trying figure out what the best approach
would be. I found Romaxa's LinuxGL port to enable running the B2G frontend on
standard distributions such as Ubuntu, which would work well as I already have
a working version of Ubuntu on my Beagleboard, but development on it seems to
have stalled and I'm having issues building it on current version of Ubuntu.
It also seems to require patching an older revision of mozilla-central and I'd
prefer something that at least tracks recent versions.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

We absolutely will begin transitioning fuller manual tests on the 1.2 branch.
But keep in mind we only have the Unagis to use. Until we have the actual
device we want to develop on, this is the only hardware we can use.

That said, i ask that Development treats any daily failures that QA recommends
as blockers, to be treated with highest attention.

In response to the daily smoke tests request - right now we've been doing daily
sanity testing (~9 tests) per day on unagi on gaia master and linking key
issues off of the tracker bug in

Let me followup with Tony to see if we should start increasing the number of

Hey Michael,

Until Bug 800431 is fixed, system messages can only be delivered to the page
that signed up for a particular API. That is, only the page which called
navigator.push.register() or mozAlarms.add() will receive the corresponding
system message. Please let us know if switching to one page works.

The iPhone 3G has 128MiB of RAM, according to Wikipedia, so FxOS might
not be usable on one; see also

Yes, I think this would help a lot! We definitely need engineers who
are willing to keep an eye on TBPL results, help fix intermittent
oranges, and generally keep things running smoothly. If there's anything
I can do to help bootstrap engineers who are new to this, let me know.

I think if we had a few people volunteer to be 'mini sherrifs' that watch
travis and gaia tbpl, background when needed and file + follow up bugs in
the correct components and push their module owners we can get into a state
where its green enough to get enabled by default and sherrifed properly,
its intermittent green now.

This is the most important point. Until it becomes a priority to deal with
the test failures, the situation is never going to improve, as seen over

Re: [b2g] Getting gaia-master + mozilla-central to a better state

2013-07-25 Thread Zac Campbell

Hi Fabrice,

We (QA) have been running the automated UI tests on master for about a
month and it has caught lots of the bugs listed in 884399. (as an aside
I wish we had started testing on master sooner). but we are also hit,
for example the gfx regression last Friday knocked out all automation
until today so any improvement in quality landing on master would
benefit us, too.

The manual QA is still focussed upon v1-train with some sporadic master
testing.

What we first noticed was that bugs we filed against master got a very
slow response from devs whereas when we would file bugs on v1-train they
would get a very fast response. However that's probably symptomatic
rather than the cause.

Definitely would like to help out any way I can with stabilising master
(from QA perspective).

Re: [b2g] Getting gaia-master + mozilla-central to a better state

2013-07-25 Thread Jonathan Griffin
There are probably multiple reasons why this has occurred, but one of
them is the fact that bugs filed due to TBPL intermittent oranges are
usually ignored for B2G. This causes our intermittent failures to build
up in aggregate until they reach a critical point and tests become
almost unsheriffable.

I think it needs to become an engineering priority to deal with these
issues before they become critical. We need engineering owners for
these types of bugs who can be responsible for debugging and fixing them
before they get out of control.

See my recent post for a good case in point:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.b2g/YcyxeW0iuNg

One thing that could help, if some engineering resources were committed
to helping, are some additional categories in bugzilla for B2G;
currently many of these failures get filed in the "General" category,
which is busy and noisy and it's easy to see how things can fall through
the cracks. Would it make sense to add a Tests category, and file
general TBPL failures there unless they could be specifically pinned to
a particular gaia app or gecko component?

2013-07-25 Thread Michael Diener
I did a bit more research and the problem seems to be that the files defined
under "messages" in the manifest do net get called if the app is not running.

This is not just about Simple Push, but also happens for alarms through
MozAlarmsManager:

"messages": [
{ "alarm": "/push-message.html" }
],

The file is never called when the alarm should trigger. Is there a general
issue with the system messaging?

According to the spec ( http://runtime.sysapps.org/#system-messages ) the app
should be started when not running, but again, this does not happen:
"... Otherwise, if the application is not running, the UA must add the message
to the pool of messages and start the application ..."

Re: [b2g] Getting gaia-master + mozilla-central to a better state

2013-07-25 Thread Dale Harvey
If I was to guess I would definitely go with option 3, "are we just
regressing because of a lack of tests (we still have a huge technical
debt to repay there)?"

Luckily last I talked to James Lal there were too many people looking to
contribute
to the integration test framework to actually deal with, it is scheduled to
be usable
shortly, and as far as I know all the fancy new functional teams (certainly
the browser
team) are switching their workflow towards requiring tests for for items to
be complete.

[b2g] Getting gaia-master + mozilla-central to a better state

2013-07-25 Thread Fabrice Desre
  Hi All,

Development for 1.1 on the b2g18 branch is approaching its term (yeah!)
which means that we will soon rely on current trunk for 1.2.
Unfortunately the builds from m-c + gaia-master have been less than
stellar lately: gfx regressions on some devices, various crashes, etc.
to the point of not being dogfoodable at all. See
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=884399 to feel the pain.

Tests are not in great shape either, and sheriffs are considering to
hide the B2G Marionnette tests later today due to the ongoing high
failure rate
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?keywords=intermittent-failure%2C%20&keywords_type=allwords&short_desc=socket.timeout&resolution=---&query_format=advanced&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&list_id=7335976)

We need to improve a lot there, but it's not clear to me why we are in
this situation: are we rushing patches in? is the review-roundrip
pressure too high to ensure a decent quality level? are we just
regressing because of a lack of tests (we still have a huge technical
debt to repay there)?

I would also like QA to run daily smoketests on these builds if possible.

Thoughts?

If you can share a link to an ICS ROM and sources for those, then you
have your Firefox OS ported. Nearly.

I was also wondering the same for iPhone 3G. Old iPhones can run android
and they are totally unmaintained. Android is unusable and bloated on
those devices, so FxOS would be a perfect choice to bring back those old
iDevices. And the same for ipads.

I'm a newbie on the topic of porting FxOS to new devices, but I may help
if anyone wants to work on this topic.

Sorry; as far as I know, no one has ported Firefox OS to any model of
iPhone.

[b2g] Issues with Simple Push on 1.1 (Keon and Peak)

2013-07-25 Thread Michael Diener
I'm able to get an endpoint successfully, but after that the issues start.

The "messages" attribute from the manifest gets ignored or at least the files
listed there will never be called (no matter what they contain):

"messages": [
{ "push": "/ff/push-message.html"},
{ "push-register": "/ff/push-message.html"}
],

Normally the following code would be within push-message.html (as suggested by
the official Simple Push example):

window.navigator.mozSetMessageHandler('push', function(e) {
console.log("endpoint reached");
});

But as push-message.html never gets called, I put it instead in my main page
and the handler gets successfully called. The downside to this is that it only
gets called, if the app is in memory (in fore- or background). If it is not
(e.g. if device just started and app was not started yet), nothing is called.

Am I doing something wrong or are these 2 issues known bugs or even limitations?

This is about a hosted app (not a packaged app) in case it matters.

Thanks,
Michael
