Anyway, there is no justification for you having used the wording that you used ('How on earth did this "release" get out (Fedora/OpenOffice ??) ?? This is just one of many basic issues I and others have had with Fedora recently.'), because: 1. Fontwork objects are 3-D objects, therefore the performance depends on graphic driver, card and so on. I just checked it and it works reasonably well on my machine (6-slide presentation with a fontwork on each slide was loaded in 10 seconds and transition between slides took a second at worst). That means there are users for whom it works without problems. 2. This upstream bug: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=58291 says someone had similar performance problems with fontwork in OO.o 2.0. That means it's nothing new in 3.1 (and I personally doubt there was much change in this area between 2.3 and 3.1). 3. Fontwork is just a very small piece of OO.o. Even if it had as poor performance as you describe on _every_ system, it would hardly be a blocker for release of OO.o and it's absolutely unimaginable it would be a blocker for release of Fedora. That means it can hardly be described as basic issue. D. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel

Chris Adams wrote: > It shouldn't be based on the sum, as that would mean positives for one > release could override negatives for another. That's kinda the whole point. "Kinda" because of course negatives should not be ignored, but that's always true, even if the positives are for the same release! They need to be checked for validity (e.g. longstanding breakage which is not a regression nor the one bug supposed to be fixed is not a valid reason to reject the update, but I've seen even more blatantly invalid complaints), and fixed if valid, not outvoted. (This just shows again how numeric karma is flawed. It's really stupid to rely on that number for anything serious.) But my point is that lack of positives for some release should indeed be ignored if there's enough positive feedback for the exact same update on some other release. > If you want to require simultaneous pushes, they should only be after > testing for each release is known good. First of all, I don't want to REQUIRE anything, but RECOMMEND things. We already have enough rules we're required to follow, and unfortunately more (and completely unnecessary ones at that) are coming soon. :-( And secondly, my suggestion is to assume that positive feedback on release n + no complaints on release m = the package is fine on release m as well (which has a probability very close to 1 in practice, especially if it's built from the same specfile in both cases). > Just because something works on F12 doesn't mean it doesn't break things > on F11. How do I get these symbols on my system? R. PS. I hope this is the right place to ask, but if it isn't, then I'll ask elsewhere. On 03/17/2010 01:13 PM, Andrey Ivanov wrote: In order to support "Old DN format including DN in the double quotes" another cn=config switch may be necessary. It seems there was recently a new switch introduced to make the dn syntax validation a little more "relaxed" - nsslapd-dn-validate-strict. Maybe this one could be used to allow for DNs with double-quoted values? Actually, the way how we are going to handle the old style 'dn: ="",' is converting the old style to a new style in the normalization when the server receives DNs from clients and the converted new style DN is used in the rest of the process. The nsslapd-dn-validate-strict value is examined in the DN syntax validation code for now. Unless we change it, the DN syntax validation code always receives the new DN style. Ok. What i wanted to say is that we should avoid any new config parameters in cn=config. The way you propose to handle the problem is the best one - it is completely transparent to the user, the server back-end "sees" only the normalised DNs so it does not complain and no additional configuration parameters are necessary. That being said, are you suggesting if nsslapd-dn-validate-strict is on, we should not convert an old style DN to a new style? That'd be really strict. I'm leaning toward to the other side accepting the both old and new style with no restriction. Do you see any disadvantages in allowing the old style? No, absolutely not, i agree completely with your reasoning. The code should be strict but not completely rigid :) Taking care of the "legacy" presentation in a transparent manner is the ideal solution. Thanks so much for the confirmation, Andrey. Python SIG
I noticed that there's an effort to better organize the various Special Interest Groups in Fedora: https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-engineering-services/ticket/2 I noticed that although https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Python had "[[Category:Language-specific SIGs]]" we didn't have: "[[Category:SIGs]]" and so we weren't showing anywhere on that page. I've fixed this, and the page is now at least showing on the list at the bottom of: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:SIGs However, we're not in the hand-written list on that page, and I feel that we should be (hey, Ruby gets a mention, why can't we :) ) Any ideas what the summary info for the SIG should be? At the risk of plagiarism, Ruby's says: "A SIG for people who are interested in improving the state of Ruby in Fedora. This includes packaging Ruby libraries and applications, setting and improving standards for packaging them as RPM's and maintaining Ruby packages for Fedora." and that might be a good first start, but I'd also include the runtime as well as libraries and applications - I don't want people to feel that the runtime is somehow sacrosanct (just more care required!). How about this: "A SIG for people who are interested in Python on Fedora. This includes packaging and optimizing the various Python 2 and Python 3 runtimes (CPython, Jython), packaging libraries and applications, setting and improving standards for packaging them as RPM's and maintaining Python packages for Fedora." (somewhat copied from Ruby) I think the various questions on the F-E-S ticket are good ones. I'm willing to do some work towards some of that ticket, but any help would be welcome. Thoughts? Hi there, is there a list of known deficiencies of fedora - I mean those which can be cured by developing new software, rather than fixing bugs? Or, if such list does not exist, can you name a few missing item from fedora? Nevertheless I believe if someone (anyone) starts to be active on their mailing list, it will make things move again in a good direction. If it does not, it makes sense to do a fork, because a _lot_ of people use the package, send patches, and improve logwatch in a long run. I have had this in my todo list since 5 months or so, even promising it to a colleague of mine that time. Unfortunately there are still things with higher priority to be done. If you can help and devote some time to logwatch, then we should cooperate. > This question is important in the context of the issues i had > programming for logwatch. Is it really enabled by default on Fedora? It should not be enabled in a desktop spin, and Fedora currently has no server spin. If logwatch is installed and enabled on some spin one day, this should be documented in the deployment guide, so inexperienced users can read about the presence of logwatch, and how to use it. [389-devel] DN normalisation design document
Hi Noriko, i've read the design document http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrade_to_New_DN_Format In order to support "Old DN format including DN in the double quotes" another cn=config switch may be necessary. It seems there was recently a new switch introduced to make the dn syntax validation a little more "relaxed" - nsslapd-dn-validate-strict. Maybe this one could be used to allow for DNs with double-quoted values? Here is the commit comment for that parameter : commit 0410819d48795fca4faf986cf8658c34c4d929e3 Author: Nathan Kinder Date: Wed May 13 11:12:11 2009 -0700 Add strict DN syntax enforcement option. The DN syntax has become more restrictive over time, and the current rules are quite strict. Strict adherence to the rules defined in RFC 4514, section 3, would likely cause some pain to client applications. Things such as spaces between the RDN components are not allowed, yet many people use them still since they were allowed in the previous specification outlined in RFC 1779. To deal with the special circumstances around validation of the DN syntax, a configuration attribute is provided named nsslapd-dn-validate-strict. This configuration attribute will ensure that the value strictly adheres to the rules defined in RFC 4514, section 3 if it is set to on. If it is set to off, the server will normalize the value before checking it for syntax violations. Our current normalization function was designed to handle DN values adhering to RFC 1779 or RFC 2253 Concerning the logic of escaping/unescaping/normalisation we could test how openldap behaves in each case (as you've made it in "DN HEX HEX" bug). For upgrades/migrations and double quotes in DNs: the two values may be left during the upgrade (just in case someone uses them as-is) and then an optional validation/cleaning script could be provided separately? The sensitive part here is the whole o-NetscapeRoot tree: console using and writing this type of values, replication agreement/management etc As for the "related bugs" section i think another bug should be added ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=199923), it concernes the same RFC4514 compliance. -- 389-devel mailing list 389-de...@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/389-devel

How do i decrease the time mock takes?
hey, How would I decrease the time mock takes to rebuild my srpm? I read up this page[1] "The cached buildroots trick above is much faster than using squid alone, but you can also use squid in addition to the cached buildroots, particularly if you are at the slow end of an Internet connection." However, mock still takes a lot of time to update the cache here. How can i further speed it up? - Is there a reason why presto is disabled for mock? Thomas, I don't want to go into details because I don't want a flame war, but the IRC backlogs prove you wrong in different ways. And still I wouldn't dare calling you a liar. I have added a spec file and patches to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10 which allow linphone to build on F-13. The version has had to be updated to linphone-3.2.1 because ortp, on which it depends, has been updated to 0.16.1. Can someone apply the updates and build it? I don't think I can take it any further. Thanks! I reported elsewhere to some virt. folks that it is also a CPU hog (in terms of waking up guests every two seconds to poll a virtual CD device that may almost never have "media"). They are going to look at fixing the qemu emulation so that virtualized drives can report media status without being polled. But this now yields two interim solutions, including either explicitly telling hal not to poll (I typically do this on all new installs under virt) or removing this package in the future. My one reads the system's Yum repo configuration by default (and it only has a few options explained by --help, such as restricting the check to packages matching a regexp - and a multilib option could be added but it's not really tested with x86_64 and multiarch repos). Probably the first thing I'd change if I continued to work on it is to merge the file mode conflicts with the file checksum conflicts for better readability. libssh2 F11 update breaks Fedora 12 DVD update
On the F12 install DVD we have libssh2-1.2-2.fc12. A fully updated F11 will have libssh2 with a higher version. Apparently anaconda force updates some packages, if you update with the F12 DVD, but not the libssh2 package, which will lead to a broken yum, because python-curl needs libcurl, which needs libssh2. But the libssh2 from F11 needs libssl.so.8 which is not available anymore on the system (anaconda force update of openssl??). So yum does not run anymore. The non-technical user ends up with a broken system. Solution? -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel
