One benefit of setgid over simply giving an account logreader group
membership is that that even that user account doesn't have general read
access to logs outside of a specific escalation point (in this case, the
setgid logfetch tool). To the extent a security review of the log reading
code is needed, it makes auditing easier.

If there are multiple levels of log security needed (secure vs. everything
else?) one could use multiple setgid tools (logreader or daemon for
regular logs, adm for secure ones?), or I suppose just have different users
 with different group/secondary group memberships.

Either way, one should still never need to make a tool setuid root to read a

since logs currently are only readable and writable for root user (not
group), setgid wouldn't work. Thinking it over, I still would use a
special log reader group (and putting users for log reading programs
into this group).

logcheck e.g. uses a small tool (logtail) for reading logs. If we simply
setgid logtail, everybody could read logs. Still I can not see an
advantage of setgid.

This will touch *all* log files. Kevin Fenzi suggested, this should
become a feature (I think this is rather a bugfix than a feature, but
I'm not a fesco member), I started a Feature Page in the wiki:

it is far from complete, take it as work in progress.

yum debuginfo strangeness

2011-03-04 Thread Neal Becker
I pushed mercurial-1.8-1 to fc14 testing. The next day I unpushed it.

Today I did yum update. updates-testing is not enabled. I got:
 rpm -q mercurial-debuginfo
mercurial-debuginfo-1.8-1.fc14.x86_64

Of course, I don't have mercurial-1.8.

So this is undesirable behavior. The debuginfo I might need for my currently
installed
mercurial-1.7.5-1.fc14.x86_64

got removed, and a useless debuginfo replaced it.

This and many of the other ones that you reported against my name and
OCaml native binaries. The OCaml compiler doesn't generate DWARF
output (because nothing at the moment could consume it, so what would
be the point). Now I don't know if it's a bug or not that debuginfo
is missing for these, but maybe the script should exclude
 OCaml-generated programs (somehow).

Fine, thanks.

I modified the script to skip OCaml-generated packages. There seem to be
no reasonable way to correctly detect OCaml-generated _binaries_.

There was an idea one may need more different locally installed debuginfo rpms
but so far it is not possible (one of the reasons is /usr/src/debug contains
only NV and not NVRA so they conflict) and also with all the mock and ABRT

So the rpmbuild fix proposal so that binary-debuginfo NVRAs must match may
be even useful from my point of view nowadays.

 3. outsource the project to Fedora Project
 4. try to $ tx push -t
 5. got unauthorized error with correct user/login in .transifexrc

 - as it turned out you have to push the translation files *before* you
outsource the project, because once you do it, you have to be a member
of that team to add translation, which I think is wrong and the owner of
the project should always have the permission to add (push) translations
(even the button Add Translation in webui dissapears once you
 outsource the project)

A fix is on the way for our weekly Tx updates. Until then, please use
the above workaround (push translations before outsourcing access).

Instructions on wiki were updated with this tip.

 Quick Summary
 ---
The Fedora translation workflow has changed.  If you are a developer
of a package being translated by the Fedora Translation (L10n)
Project, you must change your workflow slightly if you want translated
strings to appear in your software package. Tools and assistance are
available to make this workflow as simple as possible for developers.
 Read below for details.

 Details
 ---
Over the past couple of weeks, we've made some improvements and
infrastructure changes to the Fedora translation system.  We've moved
from a self-hosted version 0.7 instance of the Transifex software to a
hosted version of the 1.1-dev version at Transifex.net. The upgrade
from version 0.7 to version 1.0 (and beyond) introduces a number of
important changes for developers and packagers.  Please pay close
attention to this email, particularly if your software package uses
translations provided by the Fedora Translation team.  While the
changes aren't terribly complicated, they do have a bigger impact on
the developer than they do on the translation team.

The most visible change is that Transifex’s native integration with
source code management systems has been replaced by a mechanism for
automatic updates.  Transifex now watches an HTTP view of a repository
for change notifications.  In addition, there is now a more secure
command-line tool for project maintainers and translators.  This new
command-line tool has been packaged for Fedora in the
transifex-client package.  It is currently available in Rawhide
(pre-F16), and in the updates-testing repositories for Fedora 13,
 14, and 15, and EPEL 5 and 6.

 Here's the new workflow:

This series of steps only needs to be run once for a project.
 * The developer installs the transifex-client package:
    yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install transifex-client
 * The developer runs the tx init command in the top level folder of
 the project.
 * The developer runs the tx set command according   to the
 transifex-client user guide found at:
 http://help.transifex.net/user-guide/client/client-0.4.html.  This
creates a small config file, .tx/config, which can be committed in the
 repository for re-use, if desired.

This series of steps are run on as as-needed basis:
 * The developer updates and commits his or her POT file to the
project's repository at string-freeze time or as needed.
 * Transifex watches an HTTP link to that POT file and auto-updates its
English strings regularly, *OR* the developer can also push the POT
file to Transifex (either manually or as part of a
build script) by using the tx push command.
 * Translators work inside Transifex.  Translated strings are stored
inside of Transifex, and are *not* pushed automatically to the
 developer's repo.
 * Before rolling a release, the developer runs 'tx pull' (either
manually or from a build script) to fetch the latest translation files
from Transifex. Translation files do not need to live in
the repo, although the developer may commit and store copies if desired.

For more details on the features of the new version of Transifex and
more help on using the transifex client, please refer to either
 http://help.transifex.net/user-guide/one-dot-zero.html or the
 Fedora-specific wiki page at
 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAQ_on_migration_to_transifex.net. If
you have technical questions, feel free to ask questions in the
#fedora-l10n or #transifex IRC channels or on the devel mailing list.

poppler soname bump in F15 and rawhide

2011-03-04 Thread Marek Kasik
Hi,

I plan to rebase poppler in Fedora 15 and rawhide to poppler-0.16.3.
There is one API change (in PreScanOutputDev.h) and 1 soname bump
(libpoppler.so.12 to libpoppler.so.13).
You can test it against your package with this scratch-build:
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=2884655
I'll do chain-build of poppler and packages requiring it next Thursday
(10th of March).

For the sake of brevity... I already understand the encrypted

I mentioned one: any filesystem tree that grants regular users write

subdirectory tree a separate filesystem is one way to do it.

Another reason to isolate user-writable subdirectory trees to separate
filesystems is to make certain types of security attacks more
difficult (by removing the ability of a regular user to create a hard
link to a file).

The more complex a system is... the more likely it is to fail.

Generally speaking, yes. But sometimes the benefits provided by the
increased complexity are worth the (negligible in this case, IMHO)
increase in risk.

GTK Menus and Buttons don't have icons

2011-03-04 Thread Hugo Osvaldo Barrera
Some time ago, GNOME decided that menus and icons having icons is
confusing (though a great deal of people said hey, icons are easier to
recognize than texts).

Personally, I disagree and reverted this to the previous behaviour. I
found most people I know either did the same thing, or asked me how to
do it.

I realize that following mainstream GNOME is usually the preferred
choice inside fedora, however, I really believe that we should consider
if this particular option is the best. Menus and Buttons with no icons?
I can't think of many other places I've seen such a thing, icons are
REALLY easier to recognize than texts, that's what GUI are for.

Cheers,

With the move to Gnome 3 this discussion is moot. None of it matters any
 more.

You're in for a shock with all the Gnome 3 changes if you think no menu
 icons are bad. :)

I suggest you download the latest F15 alpha and start discussions on the
 desktop list.

I realize the transition to Gnome 3 in F15, but this change affects
everyone, even if I don't use gnome (any version), but use pidgin, or
some other GTK-based software.

Re: Bugs in debuginfo packages

I had a quick look at ELF headers and so on, but I think you are

even completely pure OCaml programs link to small pieces of
gcc-compiled runtime (it's probably a bug that debuginfo isn't
generated for those pieces).
