Re: Total size of Fedora source

2012-05-19 Thread Alek Paunov

Bunch of random strings somewhat related to your proposal:

Build:

 * Assuming loaded source DB (during distribution build)

 * Source query:
pkg:gnome-keyring[@fgit='3f7ff7']//cfunc:gkm_rpc_log/trans-calls::*/arg:line/c:string/string()

   (All string line [1] literals used in calls (direct and
transitive) to gkm_rpc_log [**])

 * Filling the err-message grammar (snippet from [3]):

err-message = WARNING:  gnome-keyring ::  (
...
| couldn't secure socket:  everything
| couldn't connect to:  everything :  everything
| couldn't send socket credentials: everything
...
)

(the grammar is needed for parsing the user input for points 1st
and 3rd of your note (see also [***] alternative))

Runtime:

 * parse the user/service query WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn...:
applying the above gremmar and rendering part of the syntax tree in
response.

Kind Regards,
Alek

[*] Let's forget for a minute about the fact of hundreds different
patters in the whole codebase, let's pretend that we have to handle just
the sample error message from your propsal ;-)

[**] Imaginary xpath/xquery-like language for code queries ([4,5,6] -
leading large scale implementation AFAIK):

  pkg: pacakges namespace
  3f7ff7: 3f7ff7289907d2a27912909e63908eadb16d97bf == 3.2.1-3: Current
F16 git for gnome-keyring - implies upstream 6d5818 [2]

  cfunc: C functions namespace
  trans-calls: transitive calls axis (like ancestor-or-self but for
calling relation instead of nesting tree relation)

  arg: argument names namespace
  c: C language constructs namespace
  string(): in xpath string() function tries to convert the context
tree node to string scalar

[***] Less elegant, but also less complicated (we do not need grammar
and parsing, but just code-point _key_ matching) option is to convince
Tomas to include build instrumentation in the spec (David's gcc plugin
based in case of gnome-keyring) for hard error messages pre-enumeration
with the following effect:

 [3] L250 becomes: [FGKR0TK] couldn't secure socket: %s
 [3] L256 becomes: [FGKR0TL] couldn't connect to: %s: %s
 [3] L262 becomes: [FGKR0TM] couldn't send socket credentials: %s

Re: [Test-Announce] Fedora 17 Final Release Candidate 2 (RC2) Available Now!

2012-05-19 Thread Richard Vickery
After having this installed, is it adequate, or acceptable, to ask what
kind of information you want? Is it adequate to offer that I am prevented
from installing software in the add/remove software (market)? Those that I
attempted thus far to install consisted of Libra-office and Thunderbird
software, and am not able to install anything except for Google Chrome.

Re: [Test-Announce] Fedora 17 Final Release Candidate 2 (RC2) Available Now!

2012-05-19 Thread Richard Vickery
An update since the email below: This market still doesn't work, however
yum works very well; yum may be a challenge for those users who are not
teckies, and don't know how to use the command line as well as seasoned
users, especially since we/you give the users access to this market, for
lack of a better term.

Also, I find that scrolling is a problem with some programs on this
computer. In said programs, such as Nautilus, on this portable unit, when
sliding my index down the side of the mouse-square, I am taken immediately
to the bottom of the folder. I have to grab the scroll-bar with the
mouse-button, which can be slightly annoying.

hope this helps,

Richard

  What are the chances of having RealHotspot backported for F17 and F16 and
  available as an update?
  For F17 at least, quite good if your network card supports it. At the
  moment, that means Intel 6xxx and later, ath5k, ath9k, and perhaps a few
  others.  Try this:

  iw phy

  and if under Supported interface modes: you see AP, then your card
  and driver are capable of real AP mode.

  Dan

  None of my devices will connect using adhoc connection in my Fedora 16
  installation and having a true AP hotspot would
  certainly improve things tremendously.

  .

 Thanks Dan.

 # iw list | sed -n '/Supported interface modes/,/AP/p'
 Supported interface modes:
  * IBSS
  * managed
  * AP

 Looks like I'm good as far as my card and driver.

 Just hoping for a backport to F16 since I have one of those nvidia video
 cards that couldn't run F17.

This project is awesome, I need it to connect my android !, and I will
try follow it. I don't know what is need but we always can get all
packages from 18 and compile in 16.
About nvidia , if you are talking about property driver , rpmfusion just
built new drivers , about 6 hours ago.

Thanks,

 The total number of connections should be the same, as far as I

The risk is the rise in the maximum number of concurrent connections. A
server happily supplying 50,000 concurrent connections should not be
assumed to remain happy at 150,000 concurrent connections.

 Since it should be safe to assume that the downloads are independent
 events then there should not be any significant difference for busy
 servers. :-)

I am afraid that I have missed your point here. I am somewhat blinded by
the use of the word independent. I have a statistical background and
that word carries a meaning similar to unrelated.

Perhaps you could state your argument with more explanation

Thank you, Glen

3 times x is 3x. Tripling the stampede on a busy server for a dubious
increase in personal speed is kind of rude, from the mirror manager's
point of view. The 'ftp accelerators' that divvy up a download into a
hundred ftp range requests is pathological enough to deal with.

Before this work proceeds, can we please see some hard numbers, and
get some input from mirror managers? Remember that the project relies
in great part on the generosity of the institutions that provides
mirrors.
