python-django update to Django-1.6
Hey, recently, I saw a few requests to update python-django to Django-1.6, the corresponding bug is [1]. As there are quite a few changes, I'd expect this update to be harmful, at least - python-django-openstack-auth - openstack-dashboard will break, and won't even build any more (because they also execute sanity checks during build). So, the current plan is, to fix both packages upstream and then to update python-django to Django 1.6 in rawhide. I'd expect this to happen within the next two weeks and I'd update python-django to Django-1.6 around Dec 16th. Because of bad timing, we won't have Django-1.6 in f20. Re: Best practice for multiple version/OS boot?
On Mon, 25 Nov 2013 06:33:03 +, Tim Landscheidt wrote: So what are Fedora developers /actually/ using? Creating a separate GRUB partition and chainloader/configfile? Chainloading (via 40_custom) is what I'm still doing with GRUB2, and it works with different bootloaders, too (unlike configfile). I've used configfile manually and as a last resort only. Installing boot loaders into boot partitions also has the benefit that those are available when I replace the main OS *and* MBR. Running OS prober in the main OS after each installation/ kernel update? Not really an option. Only three installed kernels are kept during updates, so if you ever forget rebooting to the main OS to recreate the GRUB2 config file, you've lost. Something else? How often do the setups al- low one to shoot oneself in the foot, or are they (more or less) foolproof? The most important breakage I remember is that eventually I've had to repartition in order to add an MBR gap (around Fedora 16). -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
Question about Final change deadline
Hi, Tomorrow is F20 Final change deadline happening (according to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/20/Schedule). If I still have a few packages in updates-testing - will these be added to the final compose later? Or these packages should be in stable by the time of Final change deadline to hit the final compose? Bump of giflib broken OpenJDK (and many other packages I guess)
Hi! Although it is more then nice to have giflib 5 in rawhide, I would encourage you to untag[1] it from rawhide, and prepare doubled packages in koji to give dependent packages time to rebuilt: 1) Find a provenpackager / releng member to work on rebuilding all the packages quickly (in dep order) 2) Introduce a libgif4 compat package with the old soname, to satisfy deps while the packages are being rebuilt. Right now any openjdk can not build, because it need itself to build. And old version still needs giflib4. So the build fail on dependency reolution. Many other packages will have similar problem, or will even need changes in code. Please really work around it quickly, as right now whole update proces of java packages is stopped. * PRD (mmaslano, 16:19:29) * LINK: http://piratepad.net/PwUiH4MEPR (abadger1999, 17:04:53) * ACTION: everyone to send one general thing they want the WG to enable and one specific thing they'd personally want to work on to the mailing list this week (abadger1999, 17:37:44) As I've stated previously, I would like to work on few areas: - Python stack - making Fedora the most appealing distro for Python developers, enabling builds of extension packages against alternative interpreters like PyPy or Jython - SCLs - getting SCLs into Fedora (in a pragmatical and usable way) - Setting up development environments - DevAssistant [1] - Better tools for packagers/packaging automation - pyp2rpm (I haven't visited that for some time, will have to give it some time...), spec2scl, ... So to get back to your question: - I'd like the WG to think about how we could support building extension packages for multiple interpreters of dynamic languages - e.g. Python+PyPy+Jython, Ruby+JRuby+Rubinius (this will probably need to be coordinated with FPC). - Personally, I invest lots of my time in work on DevAssistant, which IMHO is a relevant tool for this WG (it's about setting up development environments, scaffolding source code etc.) and I'd like to continue working on that. Re: Best practice for multiple version/OS boot?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On 11/24/2013 11:33 PM, Tim Landscheidt wrote: Hi, IIRC fedora-review suggested to test packages on all sup- ported Fedora releases. So, with a larger hard disk, I want to install Fedora 19, 20 (soon) and Rawhide and throw in (recent) Debian and Ubuntu as well. As my notebook doesn't support VMs, I'm interested in best practices for partition- ing and multi-boot setups. Currently I use a partition for /boot and another for an en- crypted LVM, so I only need to worry not to put private data in /boot, and I would like to keep such flexibility. I suppose I need to create a /boot partition for each ver- sion/OS. I have had different Fedora versions share the same encrypted LVM without problems; I assume Debian and Ubuntu will do so as well, but I will keep some free space and partitions just in case. More contested seems to be the multi-boot setup. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=872826 has a myriad of opinions on how it should be set up; http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Jlaska/Multiple_OS_Bootloader_Guide suggests chainloader, and http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Multi_002dboot-manual-config.html recommends configfile. Of course there is also GRUB's OS prober. So what are Fedora developers /actually/ using? Creating a separate GRUB partition and chainloader/configfile? Running OS prober in the main OS after each installation/ kernel update? Something else? How often do the setups al- low one to shoot oneself in the foot, or are they (more or less) foolproof? Thanks in advance, Tim Enough people have asked this sort of question that Chris Roberts and I started hacking on a Guide to address it. Suggestions, criticisms, or contributions are equally welcome. Self Introduction
Hello all, My employer, ONELAN, have been using Fedora as a baseline Linux system for our products for a while now, and I've just hit a situation where no-one's packaging gstreamer1-python, but we're going to start depending on it. Rather than just keep my packaging work to myself, I'm volunteering to maintain this package within Fedora, so that everyone can benefit from it, including ONELAN (who will hopefully see the quality of the package improve as I learn from you guys). -- Simon Farnsworth signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part. -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Some relevant information for multiple python interpreters: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Toshio/Flock2013_Python_Guidelines#pypy With Alex Gaynor's input I'm thinking that we probably have two choices in this area: 1) Separate (sub)packages. Similar to what python2, python3, and python26 in EPEL5 stacks are doing. Precedent wise, this likely makes the most sense. 2) Move to something like Debian does but maybe with less symlinks and maybe build-time instead of run-time .pyc creation. dmalcolm rejected the Debian approach as too hacky. To me it's a bit too complex for what it enables. But perhaps the implementation could be simplified and made suitable for use in Fedora. This would be a big departure from the past and would affect the main python stack as well as alternate interpreters so it is a much bigger and time consuming task to enable than the first alternative. -Toshio pgp8rplUUqlHB.pgp Description: PGP signature -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct

Re: [pkgdb2] call for testers, bug reports and RFE
Till Maas wrote: It is possible, but I have to agree that github is more convenient/efficient than the workflow you describe. Huh? The export patches, attach to issue tracker workflow allows me to work with a normal local clone. The GitHub pull request workflow forces me to create a fork on GitHub and push my clone there (and for some projects, users who don't know how GitHub works will most likely attempt to use those forks, even though they aren't actually meant to be used other than as a source for pull requests; for pkgdb2, this is probably not an issue though ;-) ), then juggling with the 2 different upstreams (the true upstream and the clone it forced me to create). And GitHub tries to enforce that broken workflow in all silly ways possible. For example, their issue tracker arbitrarily only accepts image (picture) files as file uploads, no patches (nor even any other non-image content, e.g. log files). It is also not possible to file a pull request from anything other than a repo located on GitHub, you cannot even use a clone hosted elsewhere, let alone submit an exported patch (the way ReviewBoard, used e.g. on reviewboard.kde.org, works, a much better patch review interface, which I guess would be easy to set up on Fedora Hosted if maintainers think the issue tracker is not good enough). So from the patch submitter's point of view, GitHub is much worse! And from the maintainer's point of view, I don't see what's wrong with git am and git push either. Those are normal git commands you can issue on the command line, or if (like me) you prefer point-and-click UIs, you can apply the patch with qgit and push it with git-cola. (By the way, don't ask me why git-cola doesn't have a menu entry for git am, or why qgit doesn't support even basic repository manipulation such as git push. At least I can fire up qgit from git-cola, having it set up as the history viewer.) So you can just use the same tools you use for your own development, you don't have to go through some crappy proprietary web interface. Jan Kratochvil wrote: There were multiple Bugs suggesting the same, they are linked together for example from this one from 2005. But it all got WONTFIXed: Debug info RPMs do not require exact maching binary rpm https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=151598 The problem with those dependencies is that -debuginfo covers all the subpackages, so which one should it require? All of them? That's more often than not NOT what I want. (E.g., do we really want to force everyone to install gcc-* just because ABRT/DrKonqi/whatever wants to install the (usually unneeded) debugging information for libgcc? Getting gcc-debuginfo dragged in is bad enough!) Hi, On Tue, 2013-11-19 at 15:30 +0800, Mathieu Bridon wrote: My plan is to do the following in Rawhide (the future Fedora 21) : * Move the headers back to /usr/include, as upstream intended * Put the event.h header into a libev-libevent-devel subpackage, and make it Conflicts: libevent-devel (this is what Debian did) * Drop our pkgconfig file. I have just done that: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=480826 Repeating below the information I had gathered to help maintainers of libev-using packages adapt their own packages. I'd be happy to help fix those packages if needed, I just can't do it myself (except for weighttp) as I'm neither a provenpackager nor a co-maintainer. And once I move the libev headers in /usr/include, then they'll be found anyway. i3lock -- The spec file calls pkgconfig to find the libev headers. This should just be removed, and the package should build just fine, as intended by upstream. libverto Upstream itself requires the pkgconfig file for libev. That's just a terrible idea, as it means libverto won't build on e.g Debian, or with the upstream libev. libverto should be fixed upstream here IMHO. ocaml-lwt - The package has a patch to make it find the headers int he Fedora-specific location. It should be dropped, and that should be it. picviz -- The package has a patch to make it find the headers int he Fedora-specific location. It should be dropped, and that should be it. rubygem-passenger - Upstream hardcodes -I/usr/include/libev in the cflags, which is only needed with our current libev package in Fedora, nowhere else. Anyway, the package should just build without any change once I move the libev headers to /usr/include. spectrum Upstream searches for the ev.h header in various folders, so things should continue to work without a change. stud Our package has a patch to hardcode -I/usr/include/libev in the CFLAGS. On Mon, 2013-11-25 at 10:27 -0500, Nathaniel McCallum wrote: - Original Message - That's why I said I wouldn't make libev-devel conflict with libevent-devel. I said I would put the event.h header from libev into a libev-libevent-devel subpacke, and only this one would conflict with libevent-devel. I presume libverto uses ev.h from libev and event.h from libevent, right? In that case, it would still do that just fine even after I make the changes. I believe that should work. I'm happy to fix the .pc upstream requirement of libverto. This proposal seems sensible to me. Thanks Nathaniel. As I mentioned elsewhere, I have just done this in Rawhide. Basically, the upstream changes for libverto should be trivial: - libevent installs its event.h header in /usr/include, so you can link to that directly - libev installs its ev.h and ev++.h in /usr/include as well, so you can link directly to that. And that's pretty much it, there shouldn't be anything for you to do, except stop requiring the libev pkgconfig file (which I dropped in Rawhide). With this change, libverto should then build on all distributions, as we were (afaik) the only ones shipping a pkgconfig file for libev. Let me know if I can help. -- Mathieu -- devel mailing list devel@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel Fedora Code of Conduct: http://fedoraproject.org/code-of-conduct
