Need perl help to remove dpkg dependency on licensecheck (devscripts-minimal)

2015-10-09 Thread Sandro Mani

Hi

Recent versions of devscripts-minimal (containing licensecheck) began
depending on dpkg-perl due to [1]. Unfortunately I'm quite unfamiliar
with perl, can anyone suggest an alternative way to accomplish the same
which does not use spawn from Dpkg::IPC?

Thanks
Sandro

4. Take over responsibility for keeping the application up to date

I'm actually all for unbundling, but going it alone is not guaranteed
to be simple. "Oh, hey, that deprecated function has been removed."

Sounds like you're volunteering for an Unbundling SIG, go ahead, you
have blessing.
I can even provide you a list of offending packages or ones that are
not updated because of the unbundling efforts (ie: hadoop)

Good luck with that, we can't even ban repeated offenders on this very
list, let alone packagers that let bundled libs sneak in.

I read all above and I still believe that you're turning something
that has always been a best-effort goal into some kind of dogma.
New policy needs better wording and guidelines changes but it's not
that different from the previous one.

Unbundling will still be required when possible and necessary (e.g
dead upstream), but we have now a better footing to track bundled
libs, and stop misguided behaviours.

(Another) One mailing list to rule them all

2015-10-09 Thread Robert Kuska
For those who are interested new (official) mailing list was created (kudos to
Nick
Coghlan and Barry Warsaw). The purpose of the mailing list is to bring together
all folks
from various Linux distro communities to discuss any future (e.g.
usr/bin/python)
or current features (/wave PEP476) affecting our beloved distributions and how
to
deal with them consistently :-).

Also here is Nick's reasoning:
> With the Python 3 migration, and the growth in interest in user level
> package management for development purposes, what do you think of the idea
> of setting up a new Linux SIG to have those discussions? I know it's a case
> of "yet another mailing list", but I think it will be worthwhile to have a
> clear point of collaboration within the Python ecosystem, rather than
> expecting Pythonistas to know how to reach out to (other) distros directly.

I am worried that a lot of packagers will just refuse to do anything that
upstream does not support, either:
* because they ARE upstream, or
* because they are too worried about offending upstream, or
* because they are too lazy and/or too busy to rebase patches.
And the often-cited fact that there are more and more upstreams not
supporting unbundling only makes this WORSE and is actually a reason for
MORE strictness in downstream policies, not less!

The new policy does not require any kind of rationale for refusing, just
saying "no" is enough to block everything.

I find it funny that you are citing Debian in an attempt to support your
point, because Debian actually has a "no bundled libraries" policy at least
as strict as our old one.

Because it is the worst possible consequence of bundled libraries (or abuse
of compatibility libraries – there too, more effort needs to be spent on
making things work with the latest version of the library, a compatibility
library must be only a last resort).

And symbol conflicts are not that trivial to detect:
* The packages will typically build just "fine", the crashes happen only at
  runtime.
* Scanning binary packages for conflicting symbols does not work either
because they are only a problem if the conflicting libraries get dragged
into the same executable at runtime.
* The crashes can appear only if or when certain plugins are loaded.
(Plugins are an additional obstacle for any kind of static analysis.)
* The crashes can appear only on certain desktop environments, because a
conflicting library can get dragged in by platform integration plugins.
* The crashes can even appear only on certain hardware! One example from the
past: The dreaded Krita symbol conflict between OpenGTL and Mesa OpenGL
(which both bundled their own, incompatible copies of LLVM). Krita was
working fine (or at least without crashing on this symbol conflict) on
proprietary drivers, but not on the Free ones. (This was originally fixed
in Fedora and distributions that listened to my advice in the upstream bug
by making both OpenGTL and Mesa link to the same shared LLVM library. But
some distributions kept using bundled, static or compatibility copies of
the LLVM library and thus that crash still existed on some distributions
years later! It is now historical because OpenGTL was discontinued and
Krita stopped using it.) This example, by the way, is why I am extremely
worried about the recent explosion of llvm* compatibility libraries in
  Fedora.
* A symbol conflict that happens not to cause a crash can suddenly start
crashing if the implementation of one of the 2 versions of the library
  changes.

So to me, this is a giant scary mine field that is just waiting for somebody
to step on it. And I get the feeling that the vast majority of our packagers
does not understand the risk.

Did you think that the faster dependency resolution came for free in DNF?
Yum used SQLite databases, DNF uses solv data. solv data is generated by
libsolv, which parses the repository data and caches it in a form that can
be rapidly re-read and used for doing repository queries and dependency
resolution.

Debian has to use it because dpkg does not support soname dependencies. But
for RPM-based distributions, it just does not make sense. The only thing it
allows (that the soname AutoProvides and AutoRequires don't already handle)
is to attempt to parallel-install libraries for which this is NOT supported,
which is a recipe for:
1. security issues, because you are using an obsolete unmaintained library
version without realizing it (because nothing will replace your libfoo1
if the current version of your distribution ships libfoo2 instead), and
2. file conflicts, because nobody tested parallel installation of the 2
   versions.

IMHO, shipping a compatibility library needs to be a concious decision by a
maintainer. A naming scheme that allows abusing old unmaintained packages as
compatibility packages is a recipe for a disaster.

The Mageia soversion macros are a horrible overengineered mess that leads to
unreadable and overcomplicated spec files. Please do NOT pollute Fedora
packages with such completely unnecessary macros.

I also think our naming scheme for libraries makes a lot more sense:
1. The default version of the library typically has NO version suffix. Thus:
1.1. It is obvious to users which version is the default.
1.2. The package names for the default version are simpler.
2. Compatibility libraries are normally named after the user-visible
version, NOT the soversion. E.g., if we ship libfoo 0.10 as a
compatibility library, we ship it as libfoo010, not something like
libfoo7. Soversion-based naming is particularly misleading for kdelibs,
where kdelibs 3 has the soversion 4 and kdelibs 4 has the soversion 5.
(The new KDE Frameworks 5 now typically also have 5 as their soversion,
the libraries have new names (libKF5*.so) so they don't conflict. But as
long as older kdelibs still exist, that just adds to the confusion.) Our
kdelibs 3 package is called kdelibs3, not kdelibs4, which would be
extremely misleading. Debian used kdelibs4c2a for kdelibs 3 and kdelibs5
for kdelibs 4! (The "c2a" is another unreadable mess because they decided
to encode the C++ ABI in the package name. We just did a mass rebuild on
a flag day and were done with it.)
3. There is also no requirement that library package names start with
"lib*". This should also stay that way. E.g., upstream thinks of glib as
glib, not libglib (a particularly silly name, by the way). So we should
   not unnecessarily munge the name.

%autosetup is an inflexible nonsense that just does not work in many setups
(no control over the application order of the patches, no control over the
switches passed to patch, no way to conditionally apply patches, etc.), and
also does not help specfile readability. I refuse to use %autosetup in my
packages and will yell at anybody that dares changing one of my packages to
use it (and revert the commit).

Please no! Let's not fragment Fedora even more than it already is with those
"products".

* Would packages belonging to multiple products (kernel, glibc, glib2,
systemd, NetworkManager etc.) be copied into each of those repositories?
* Where would packages that belong to a non-"product" spin (e.g. KDE) go in
that plan? Into Workstation? Into a "nonproduct" dumping ground? Neither
is really an ideal situation. If neither, then we are actually talking
about a repository per spin, which means a dozen repositories with
  significant overlap.
* And what about niche packages not clearly associated to any "product"?
Would those also end up in a "nonproduct" dumping ground that is not
enabled by default on any "product"?

I think there is a lot of value in having a common repository that ensures
interoperability to the maximum possible extent. Even Ubuntu with their
separately marketed products (Kubuntu even being released by a separate
company these days) draws from a shared repository. Let's not throw this
away.

yes, via hard links

Well, that's essentially what we have now with the Everything repo and
the whole "updates" repo.

I'm not suggesting getting rid of the the everything and full updates
repos. But maybe some focused products would benefit from a smaller
repo set. I'm also just tossing out the idea - I personally don't have
any need for it.

At this point in time, Fedora is the only major distribution I know of
that doesn't use versioned shared library package names. Both SUSE and
Mageia do, and of course the Debian/Ubuntu family does. I've spoken to
folks working in both SUSE and Mageia (especially Mageia as of late), and
I've heard that there's a particular eagerness to find a way to have RPM
generate these versioned library names for packages.

Mageia itself has a macro that generates these names, and packagers merely
have to utilize them to get the appropriate name generation. Part of that
is because of the quirks of urpmi and supporting multilib, but I don't see
why we couldn't work with the other two distros to develop a standardized
soname suffix generator that could simply be activated as a flag on a
subpackage.

IMO, it would be very nice if we could come together and hash out a
standardized approach to things. We've done it with %autosetup, %autopatch,
%make_build / %make_install, and a number of other things in RPM, I don't
see why we can't for this too.

Firefox is exactly an example of how NOT to do things, and I'm fed up of it
getting a blanket exception to our packaging guidelines. And now the "fix"
is to simply remove the guideline for all packages. :-(

I haven't checked recently, but last I checked, Debian unbundled a lot more
libraries from Firefox than we did, even where upstream explicitly "did not
allow" it. (They opted to not use the trademark anyway, so they are only
bound by the Free Software license, that of course allows unbundling
whatever they want.) One example is libpng, where Firefox requires the non-
upstream APNG patch. Debian simply ripped out APNG support from Iceweasel to
build it against the system libpng. (Though in this case, IMHO, the best fix
would be to simply apply the APNG patch to the system libpng and ignore the
libpng upstream's opinion. Then all browsers could benefit from APNG
support. Some distros do that, too.)

Then you open the doors to symbol conflicts (see my reply to Adam Jackson
elsewhere in this thread).

And the Debian way that just lets you keep your libfoo1 from even an older
RELEASE of Debian, with no updates whatsoever, not even security updates
(because there is simply no libfoo1 in the repositories for the current
version if the libfoo source package now produces libfoo2 instead), does not
work either. Compatibility packages MUST be maintained or they become a
major security issue.

The compatibility libraries also partly defeat the space savings that can be
had from unbundling.

Compatibility libraries must only be a last resort, if it is really not
possible to port the packages to the latest version. By default, we ALWAYS
need to port to the latest version.

You are missing the fourth choice: We simply push ABI-changing updates of
the library as grouped updates with all dependent packages. This works fine
as long as the library is not used by too many packages and the ABI changes
are not so major as to require nontrivial porting. We have already done this
in practice many times, for several packages. For example, exiv2 updates are
done in such a coordinated way (usually by Rex Dieter).

Then you try to port the application to the new APIs, and if it's not
possible, you revert the library commit that removed the old API.

Request to co-maintain f22-background

2015-10-09 Thread Luya Tshimbalanga
Hello,

I built an update for f22-backgrounds package which includes the missing
supplemental backgrounds.

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/package/f22-backgrounds/

Unfortunately, I do not have permission to commit the change although I
uploaded the latest tar.xz file as f22-background-22.1.0 (about 120 MB
size).
Can a proven package do the commit? I attached the updated spec file and
made a scratch build below
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=11381781

Thanks,

For the cloud case, I think it'd be nice to have one collection of
packages which are on the image itself, plus another with stuff likely
to be installed (nginx, various language stacks, databases,
caching...), and then maybe everything else.

But, maybe we say "eh, too hard", and just focus on Atomic, which works
entirely differently and therefore doesn't have this issue.

Depends what you mean by automatically: debian packaging requires
lots of manual steps. In case of an so bump the version string has to
be updated in various places in the debian/control file. I presume
that most people do search on the file.

Yeah, sounds like it wouldn't help in this case.

For the record I'm now doing the rebase using the interactive editor
and it's WAY better, wish I'd done the last one this way. =) It lets
you easily just apply the areas and tags from the existing needle to
the new screenshot, tweak a bit if you like, save under a new name, and
move on to the next one. Handy.

The reason we kept lesstif even after OpenMotif was finally freed is because

Motif 2.

A lot of applications still do not mainly because by the time

From the people who did the porting was it a quick fix or a bunch of patches?

As far as the packages I touched are concerned, the "porting effort" was
very low.

The effort basically was reflecting the packaging dep-naming changes
into the specs.

I did not have to apply any changes to the packages' source code. My
guess is, on the code-level, today's "Motif" is sufficiently backward
compatible, the packages already saw testing against Motif or even been
developed on Motif (and then ported to lesstif)[1]. I point, I which
makes me wonder, is Fedora seemingly being late in the switch to Motif
in comparison to other distros.

A problem hiding is package installation conflicts between the *-devel
package of different versions of the lesstif, openmotif and motif
packages. Therefore, I tried to stay with lesstif on fedora < 24 and
switch to motif only on fedora >= 24.

I know, we are late in the release schedule, but I am considering to

One thing that would be very helpful would be to enable keepcache=1 in
the dnf configuration? This is consistent with what yum was doing in
the old config, and in particular lets supermin pull out the pristine
RPMs of the installed packages, so we can build the libguestfs appliance.

That does sound a lot better than having to boot a VM and manually take

rawhide buildroot creation changes

2015-10-09 Thread Dennis Gilmore
Hi all,

as of this morning US time we have changed the way rawhide buildroots are
created in koji. rawhide is now using dnf to install the packages into the
buildroot. this means that in f24 and on dnf will be used to create the
buildroot. as well as manage the updates on your system.

We will not be making the same change to f22 or f23 in koji, yum will
continue to create the buildroot there. please report to Release Engineering
[1][2][3] any issue you encounter as a result of this change.

I mean, I can't speak for fesco as a whole, but speaking for myself: I
reject the question. I don't think "drawing a line" is a useful way to
think about these issues. All engineering is compromise.

> For example is the next step for Fedora to dissociate itself with
> upstream and start implementing "workarounds" instead of fixing things
> where they belong to satisfy the end users needs and expectation as well?

I'm not sure if you're aware, but that is exactly the thing a
distribution is. The software we package is not produced with a single
vision in mind, it does not all just magically fit together on the
first try. From a quick grep, of the 16000ish packages in rawhide,
~5500 have at least one patch in their spec file, and there are about
18000 patches total. Frankly I'm pleased it's that low.

You appear to be trying to set up a false dichotomy, and I reject that
model. Of course we're going to continue to work with upstreams on
bugs and best practices. It won't always be successful, it never has
been and it never will be, and we will always carry patches to make
Fedora work. We will continue to work to reduce that delta, even
though we know that it will never be zero.

More to the point, any internal beauty and elegance in building the OS
itself is fundamentally uninteresting. They are fine goals to have,
but they are only _good_ in proportion to the quality of system they
build, and the ultimate measure of quality here is utility. If that
means I need two forks of a library in the OS because different apps
have incommensurate needs and uses of that library, so be it.

Like I said, reality is complicated. Maybe it's unfortunate that
reality doesn't conform to our expectations, but as far as I can tell
that's been true for literally my entire life so I kinda stopped being
surprised and upset by that.

It's actually a step worse than this as well - our policy on this (and
on .a files) actively discourages people from being Fedora contributors,
and discourages upstreams from working with us.

Well, someone has to maintain the packages... I don't think it's
practical at this point to automate that all away.

Users who aren't maintainers would need to convince some maintainer to
take on the work.

If I remember correctly the supplemental backgrounds are subpackaged

Debian seems to have solved this problem in a much nicer way: multiple
major versions of shared libraries can be installed in parallel, and
manual work is not required, the version of the library is included
in the binary package name.

Fedora sets this bar very high: a separate review, slightly different
guidelines, so nobody bothers except for special cases.

rawhide buildroot creation changes

2015-10-09 Thread Dennis Gilmore
Hi all,

as of this morning US time we have changed the way rawhide buildroots are
created in koji. rawhide is now using dnf to install the packages into the
buildroot. this means that in f24 and on dnf will be used to create the
buildroot. as well as manage the updates on your system.

We will not be making the same change to f22 or f23 in koji, yum will
continue to create the buildroot there. please report to Release Engineering
[1][2][3] any issue you encounter as a result of this change.

Regards

Dennis

Of course it doesn't scale... unless someone has figured out some magic
dust to make software bug free and always secure and always integrated,
there needs to be people supporting all those parallel installed things
and making sure they are secure/bugfixed/integrated.

So, the barrier is then that if you need/want a compat package, you
must commit to maintaining it, or convince someone else to.

It looks like GTK+ rendering changed somehow between 2015-10-08 and
2015-10-09, which has broken almost all the tests. Looks like DPI
settings again, perhaps. I'm investigating.

This was handled far too quickly and without considering the full

this caused a lot of resentment among the FPC members (or at least
that's the impression I have).

Seconded.

What FESCO did was such kind of utterly disrespectful and rude toward FPC.

ATM, I consider it to be a matter politeness not furtherly pronounce my
opinion because I would have to be personal.
