I suspect most of the users of old-school window managers won't want to

FedRTC.org SIP and XMPP service - help needed

2015-11-12 Thread Daniel Pocock

Hi all,

I've been looking at ways to expand on the fedrtc.org service and would
like to start creating a team around the service just as we did in
Debian[1].

There are many ways for people to participate:
- answering questions from users of the service
- helping people diagnose problems and decide whether the problems
justify bug reports
- interacting with upstream developers and package maintainers, e.g. for
bug triage
- maintaining documentation / screenshots on the wiki
- proposing and/or implementing new features
- project work

This is a fast moving area and there are many opportunities for people
to show initiative and leadership and engage in project work. For example:

- the current service is only SIP, but it would be great to do XMPP too.
debian.org just went live with XMPP using Prosody. gnome.org and FSFE
also have XMPP.

- integration of SIP or XMPP with other parts of the Fedora world, such
as fedmsg[2]

- integration with IRC

- adding event-driven code to the web page (see example[3]) to make
lookups and display interesting data about callers

- helping migrate the service to run on official Fedora infrastructure
(it is currently running using packages on CentOS7 and EPEL7 so this
shouldn't be too hard)

If anybody is interested, please contact me and we can discuss how to
proceed. People are also welcome to join the Free-RTC mailing list[4]
to discuss aspects of this work that go beyond Fedora.

Regards,

Daniel

If an _upgrade_ introduces new sub-packages or new dependencies, you
need a method that can install those new packages *and* update older
installed ones at the same time. Running "rpm -U *.rpm" is like asking
RPM to "upgrade the installation to the packages specified by *.rpm",
which may involve replacing older installed ones as well as adding new
packages to the installation.

To squeeze a similar feature into "dnf install *.rpm" would be odd as
long as "dnf update …" still accepts local package files, too.

git repositories normally use '/' to separate namespaces, so i'd propose

$ fedpkg clone containers/cockpit

and maybe add support for

$ fedpkg clone srpms/cockpit

at the same time.

This has the added benefit that cgit will automatically filter docker
reposistories when you visit, e.g,

http://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/containers/

This should not be a big problem---the printer used to work, so we have
a regression. From Fred's description, it looks like a simple issue,
actually.

I agree with you that the ball is in Fred's court, though: he's the one

to me that Fred should find, reopen and pursue his bugzilla report.

On the other hand, Harald, I have to say that in this case my irony

I now have moved:

buildvm*
arm02*
arm04*
buildhw*

over to being Fedora 23.

Next week I will move the bkernel builders over and hopefully we will
also retire the old buildppc instances in Favor of some new Fedora 23
ones soon. Then we should be 100% Fedora 23 builders.

One issue to note: dnf is not that verbose when running builddep. It
will tell you if the package you needed cannot be installed, but it
won't tell you that the reason is 5 more layers deep. ;(
I've filed https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1281596 for
this.

Ok, after doing some more digging, perhaps systemd generators[1] could be
used to generate the unit file dynamically if support exists.

/usr/lib/systemd/system-generators/mcelog-generator.sh:

/usr/sbin/mcelog --is-cpu-supported &> /dev null
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then

Here's one on Ironlake, with two monitors plugged in.

still not fixed, doesn't fall back.

Like filing bugs is all well and good, but going default while nobody is fixing

"Fixing" mcelog on AMD cpu's

2015-11-12 Thread Richard Shaw
All of my computers at home are AMD based and a while ago I noticed that
the mcelog service always fails. It has been reported on BZ [1]

The easy solution was to just disable it but I wasn't sure how important it
was at the time. Turns out it's just flat out incompatible with modern AMD
processors[2,3].

So what do we do? I don't think it should be disabled since you never know
when you'll swap a hard drive or motherboard but it should have a way to
exit cleanly and just do nothing.

Basically, don't go away mad (erroring out), just go away.

I've searched the systemd help files but haven't found anything that does
this directly.

First I wondered if there was a way to use (abuse?) ExecStartPre to check
for compatibility before starting mcelog (via --is-cpu-supported) but if it
fails then the whole service fails so the result is the same.

I thought about using the error code, but grepping through the source, 1 is
used all over the place, not just for this particular problem. So making
the exit code "OK" is not an option.

Then I thought perhaps there was a way to have a separate service file to
check compatibility (mcelog-check.service?) and have it "Wants" the actual
service file. That may still be possible but I haven't figured out the
magic incantation to get that to work.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Richard

So the failed openQA tests are all caused by a kernel issue:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1281580

Kernel hangs in DRM init when booting with the 'vga' virtual graphics
adapter that openQA instances use, thus none of the tests get anywhere.

AIUI some of the cloud images are built in VMs so that may be causing
the cloud compose failure too, but I'm not sure. The lives and ARM disk
images are probably something else (dependency issues most likely),
I'll have a look at that next.

Not sure yet what is cool about that.

Since you can point the program at local packages as well as things to
fetch from remote repositories, it would be cool, if the tool were smart
enough to do the right thing, regardless of whether you run "dnf update …"
or "dnf install …".

The former failing to handle local packages whereas the latter would
happily update already installed packages, would be very confusing.

Compared with that, "rpm -Uvh …" installs what's not installed yet.
And "rpm -Fvh …" is the special case where you only want to apply
updates, but not install any new package.

The user explicitly asks the tool to do something, so why would the
tool refuse to serve the user unless it detects any problem?

This seems still still be confusing a lot of people, I see quite
regularly queries on some forums like G+ that when they upgrade to
anything post F-21 all they get is a black screen on boot. Is there
any way that if way for that to happen automatically where they don't
get to a gdm login prompt?

Ordinarily I'd probably be the first to encourage this, but having done a
lot of the work to setup Fedora Talk many years ago, I'm not sure this is a
good fit for Fedora Infrastructure. Why? Because with Fedora Talk, we saw
that the service wasn't used very much, and while the maintenance burden on
the Infra team wasn't big, it was still one more thing they had to worry
about, and something that the didn't feed 100% confident in administering.
Do you have any statistics on how much the service is being used by Fedora
contributors?

So I upgraded to F23 just around Alpha or Beta can’t remember and I’ve
experienced some odd mouse / copy paste behaviour. I haven’t yet filed a bug
but now I’m wondering… How do I know if I’m using Wayland? I’ve never
specifically configured it so anything I’m experiencing in a normal GNOME 3
session is either ‘normal’ but I don’t like it, configurable change that has a
different default or some weird bug… I’d like to know if I’m somehow not using
X anymore, and that’s the problem.

How about

$ fedpkg clone cockpit-docker

Pros

 * no need to change infrastructure

 * easy to use

 * repo name suggests content

Cons

 * not a different namespace (in fact same namespace as rpms)

 * someone can do `fedpkg clone cockpit-docker && cd cockpit-docker && fedpkg
build` and get scared that it doesn't work

   * `build` could be aware of Dockerfile and run `container-build` actually

   * error could suggest using different build method

What's the way of building (qcow, docker base) images? Could that approach be
resued? (meaning, what's the way of storing kickstart files atm?)

Self Introduction: Pavel Valena

2015-11-12 Thread Pavel Valena
Hi,

I am working for Red Hat and I will be mostly maintaining Ruby packages.

I have written many scripts, utilities and small libraries in Bash, Ruby, C++,
JavaScript and PHP. I have not released any yet, as I was studying
at a university, but I am looking forward to it.

Here is my first review request:

I think we are on the same page.
"rpm -Uvh …" ~ "dnf install" - only difference is that dnf install can
do downgrades too if you specify the version of the package
"rpm -Fvh" ~ "dnf update" - only difference is that dnf update gives you
the message that package is not installed. (I don't know whether rpm skips
not-installed packages and proceeds with the rest of arguments though)

The commands should work the same for local files and remote packages.
If update does not work like that then it's a bug in DNF and will be fixed.

Personally I find "install"/"update" naming more readable than "-Uvh"/"-Fvh".

HEAD UP: python 3.5 landed in rawhide

2015-11-12 Thread Peter Robinson
Hi All,

I've just tagged the python 3.5 rebuild into rawhide. I'm just
building a few packages that have newer versions already in rawhide,
they'll be there shortly.

There's still a few packages with issues according to repoquery [1] so
maintainers please ensure these are fixed as soon as possible. I don't
believe any there should affect general rawhide.

Any issues please let me or the python3 maintainers know.

Regards,
Peter

I've been testing Wayland myself since around the F22 time period, but
"middle click paste" and the occasional odd bug keep annoying me enough to
go back to X. Can you elaborate on the plans for supporting middle click
to paste, or is it considered a relic of a bygone era and I should try to
unlearn? I'm generally in favor of pushing the envelope a bit when it
comes to new features, but I have to admit that defaulting to Wayland at
this point seems a bit premature to me, even for rawhide.

Regards,
Peter

Seems related to failing builds on rawhide as the other post on devel
notes. My scratch build failed with:

DEBUG util.py:393: Error: nothing provides libpython3.4m.so.1.0()(64bit)
needed by gdb-7.10.50.20151027-31.fc24.x86_64

Any ideas what went wrong?

I suspect that's due to python 3.5 being tagged in, it should be OK

Re: i3wm based minimal Spin?

2015-11-12 Thread Dennis Chen
I see this more as an opportunity to create a "stock" Fedora i3-ish
setup. Granted people like to configure things on their own: KDE users
are especially known for this but do not mind their own Fedora spin.

Given a base of i3-like wm, we can create a nice starting environment.
Similar to how F23 Workstation includes Evolution, Rhythm Box, and
these other non-GNOME apps. It's optional to use those apps provided,
but providing those apps showcases some of the best that the Fedora
community has to offer. It would be great if we could accomplish the
same thing with an i3-like wm.

I did some further tests:

- Also the F23 Live image works fine (with 4.2.3 kernel), no issues
with the Ethernet, I get an immediate connection, flawless...
And: also suspend/resume works fine there (see below).

- F23 installed (with all updates): no Ethernet working and resume
after suspend doesn't turn on backlight of the laptop (system is
running fine, I can remotely login via wifi), while resuming with
backlight works perfectly using the F23 live image.

Confused...

I also don't think multiple buffers is a good idea, I've always found
that confusing in X and this has been said in the bz as well, so we
really should try to keep a single buffer too

a single buffer don't when you use selection / middle click because you
can not copy something, select something different and replace it with
the clipboard and hence the X behavior is perfect to have *both*

for me that all sounds like again something trying me to sell

Heads up: Rawhide NetworkManager and RFC7217

2015-11-12 Thread Lubomir Rintel
Hi,

starting with NetworkManager-1.2.0-0.3.20151112gitec4d653.fc24 the IPv6
connections will default to using the RFC7217 "stable privacy"
addressing mode for new connections.

This feature is intended to improve privacy of the IPv6 users by using
a different host part in each network while maintaining the address
stability (the address will remain the same when the user reconnects to
the same network). It also improves addressing robustness by dealing
with duplicate address failures.

For most users this change won't affect anything user-visible.

However, this can potentially cause problems in setups which rely on
the IPv6 addresses to be derived from the interface MAC address. If you
suspect this is the case please read on.

The change in defaults does not affect existing configurations -- if
you have your IPv6 connections already configured their addresses will
_not_ change.

There's also a way to revert to the old behavior. The address
generation mode is controlled with "ipv6.addr-gen-mode" property.

To use the older mechanism, set the property as follows:

  # nmcli c modify ipv6.addr-gen-mode eui64

To switch it to the RFC7217 mode do:

  # nmcli c modify ipv6.addr-gen-mode stable-privacy

If you're creating the ifcfg files by hand, the equivalent key is
ADDR_GEN_MODE. If it's missing, the eui64 mode is assumed.

Please see nm-settings-ifcfg-rh(5) manual for details.

If anything breaks, we'd like to hear! Feel free to follow up on this
or file a bug report.

♥,
Lubo

False failure in COPR for x86_64 on rawhide?

2015-11-12 Thread Dave Johansen

In the above COPR, it says the x86_64 for rawhide failed, but the logs look
fine and the .rpm results are there, so am I missing something or is this a
false failure?

Thanks,

I've been testing Wayland myself since around the F22 time period, but
"middle click paste" and the occasional odd bug keep annoying me enough
to go back to X. Can you elaborate on the plans for supporting middle
click to paste, or is it considered a relic of a bygone era and I should
try to unlearn? I'm generally in favor of pushing the envelope a bit
when it comes to new features, but I have to admit that defaulting to
Wayland at this point seems a bit premature to me, even for rawhide.

All I know is what I found by googling:

   https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1214655

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/75924/fedora-23-wayland-gnome-terminal-mouse-middle-click-paste/

My brain hurts after reading that. Since Wayland decided there should
be Only One clipboard buffer (which is probably a good idea), would it
be too hard to just make Menu Copy/Paste do the same thing as Keyboard
Copy/Paste (Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V) do the same thing as Select/Middle-Click
Copy/Paste, all with the same single clipboard buffer, on/between both
Xwayland apps and native Wayland apps?

I think the bug explains fairly well why that is a bad idea.

It's not so much on the paste side, where having middle click paste
whatever was in the clipboard side would not be a major problem.

It's more that you probably wouldn't want your clipboard buffer
overwritten whenever you selected some text.

Currently X has two (well three, but let's ignore the secondary
selection) buffers. One for primary selection that is overwritten when
you select and pasted with middle click and one for the clipboard
selection that is overwritten on Ctrl+C and pasted on Ctrl+V.

It really didn't take me long after first using X-based interfaces to
make use of the primary buffer, and I've pretty much never used ^C/^V
ever since.

I only ever touch the mouse when I need to select something to
copy/paste it, so I'm not going to try to pretend I understand people
saying they don't want this behavior -- but likewise please don't say
that the "selection copies" behavior is bad for everyone.
It really isn't something I (and seemingly many others) want to lose,
ever.
I also don't think multiple buffers is a good idea, I've always found
that confusing in X and this has been said in the bz as well, so we
really should try to keep a single buffer too.

If we can't get to a compromise just make it an option and everyone will
be happy (except maybe for the nagging of what should be the default,
but people can just make a poll for that -- I personally don't care as
long as it's possible without having to hack code and rebuild)

This is very much related to a thread I started a couple weeks ago. I
really think that Bodhi should be able to understand that a pair of updates
to different branches match and to push them together.

Also, compose should maybe learn to do branches together - right now I have
a broken upgrade path just because F22 finished its push while my F23 push
is still pending.

I've been testing Wayland myself since around the F22 time period, but
"middle click paste" and the occasional odd bug keep annoying me enough
to go back to X. Can you elaborate on the plans for supporting middle
click to paste, or is it considered a relic of a bygone era and I should
try to unlearn? I'm generally in favor of pushing the envelope a bit
when it comes to new features, but I have to admit that defaulting to
Wayland at this point seems a bit premature to me, even for rawhide.

we will lose the ability to have one regular clipboard and one with the
selection and middle click?

that was and is a great option if you have to paste different things
multiple times in the same document (source code) and makes things so
much faster when you just have to move the pointer and press middle-key
or CTRL+V on the postion you need it

a single buffer don't when you use selection / middle click because you
can not copy something, select something different and replace it with
the clipboard and hence the X behavior is perfect to have *both*

for me that all sounds like again something trying me to sell
feature-loss as improvement...

who says you that a update for F22 would behave identical on F23 or the
other direction when half of the OS has different versions of libraries
and the whole userland?

it may often work that way but to assume it is so by definition is a
dangerous game, i saw enough Fedora bugs the past 8 years after
dist-upgrades where the affected application had exactly the same
version as before the upgrade and behaved wrong or failed completly

Re: i3wm based minimal Spin?

I was thinking about it too... but I think that i3wm may be not the
right one since is based on Xorg and there is no plan to support
wayland in the near future. http://swaywm.org/ is a project to write
an i3wm port to wayland. I think it could be interesting to be based
on it
