fedora-obsolete-packages.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Renaming.2FReplacing_Existing_Packages

"If a retired package needs to be removed from end user machines
because it causes dependency issues which interfere with upgrades or is
otherwise harmful, a packager MAY request that an Obsoletes: be added
to fedora-obsolete-packages. Simply file a bugzilla ticket here,
including information on which package needs to be obsoleted and the
reasons why it cannot be allowed to remain installed."

What do you think "something" should be? It was removed without any
replacement. I think passing --allow-erasing is just what you're going
to have to do in order to perform an upgrade that requires erasing
packages, right?

GNOME Software should already handle this nicely, informing users of
which applications will be erased, so at least it won't be a problem
for Workstation.

It seems that nothing has been set to obsolete these packages. This is
breaking upgrade from Fedora 24 to Fedora 27 (without --allow-erasing),
since webkitgtk3 is installed by default in many Fedora 24 package
sets, and is built against a libicu version that is no longer in
Rawhide:

Can someone please do something about this? Thanks.

Even when we think we have everything in place to support rich deps, we
are going to have to tread very carefully. There is likely a bunch of
corner cases forgotten. Including potentially anything that tries to
read a rpm. we will need to do extensive testing in staging before we
can let things loose. To ensure that we can fully support them. I would
had to say to people go for it and we find some thing hidden in a
corner that will take us a year solid to fix and force everyone to undo
the changes.

This is a good example of why we can not develop new features in
isolation, instead we need to work as a whole. we have plenty to learn
from the pain of rich deps and dnf, changing core pieces is hard, and
historically we have done a bad job of documenting all the
interdependencies, I will put my hand up first as having contributed to
the problem. I just want us to make steps to get better going forward.

Re: YAST for Fedora?

On 04/18/2017 12:17 AM, Farhad Mohammadi Majd wrote:

I believe that everyone comes from MS Windows to Linux will need to YAST,

* service management, what services are running, what are stopped, and user can

* systemd control
* hardware configuration and provide technical info about them
* many more modules for doing essential works

until Fedora does not provide YAST, it can not claim that is a good alternative
for desktop users of MS Windows.

An alternative does not mean it has to be a clone. The beauty about
linux is that it tends to work without you needing to change any
configs. I honestly can't remember the last time I've needed to edit
services or systemd. All my devices work out-of-the box, except the
wireless card in my laptop that wasn't originally supported by the
kernel and so I had to grab a newer one from rawhide and newer firmware
from upstream.

Also, if you're going to configure services, it's a good bet you'll want
to edit the config files as well.

Sure, a configuration tool might be great for some simple things, like
sharing your internet connection at home, but
a) as stated before, the purpose-specific tools are much better at this
than one-size-fits-all ones
b) there's simply less need to run services yourself nowadays, because
you can get them cheap or free of charge from the cloud.

the feature in koji to make signed repos its not entirely a fix, while
we are not really planning to support mash longer term, it does mean
that people will have no way to make repos from koji tags at home,
something they can do today. we maybe need to document a way to do it
using pungi. There may be some corner cases where it will make sense to
keep mash alive, for those interested in those corner cases.

Dunno about Taskotron package-level tests. openQA update-level tests
trigger on 'bodhi.update.edit' and 'bodhi.update.request.testing'
messages; you can trigger a re-run of *all* the tests by editing the
update, but that's a bit silly.

So what is currently triggering the tests now?
fedmsgs when builds are tagged into specific koji tags?

I know it's not a fancy gui, but could we just untag/retag something to
emit another fedmsg to retest?

One thought: we actually have the same problem for openQA, now it's
running tests on updates. This isn't very visible at present so devs
haven't been asking about it, but I suspect as soon as the results show
up in Bodhi, someone will be wanting a 're-run test' button. I'm not

Linuxconf was actually a part of Red Hat Linux for a while, but
removed in RHL 7.1 I believe (over 15 years ago), long before Fedora.
I only brought it up as a joke. It was removed because it was the
wrong approach.

Systems management is an interesting topic, and very difficult to get
right. I think cockpit is a great tool, but it is not a full system
configuration tool, and shouldn't be. While it has been years since I
was in the system engineering/sysadmin world, I very much remember
tools like smit/smitty. Not because they were easy to use, but
because they bred an entire group of "sysadmins" who knew these admin
tools, but had no idea what those tools were actually doing. They
didn't understand the systems at all. I really like the approach of
a) self configuring services where possible, b) service specific tools
where required, and c) good old fashioned config files available for
fine tuning everything. Ideally, a large percentage of users will
never have to configure their services. For those that do, service
specific tools can always make better decisions than something unified
tracking a ton of services and upstreams. Config files might require
reading a man page, or docs, but they are manageable, they can be
revision controlled in git, and provisioned to a number of machines at
once very easily.

Yeah, it's not an ideal solution but in my mind, it's better than
asking folks to rebuild just to get the task re-run.

I was hoping that we'd be able to auth against ipsilon without much
added effort. Ideally we'd restrict things to someone with ACLs to the
involved package but that's far from required.

cla+1 should be good enough for now, I think. Limiting it to
packagers could also be reasonable but I'm not sure it's going to be a
big deal so long as we can keep track of who's doing the reschedules
through at least a log file.
