Re: starting services in fedora

2018-04-16 Thread Zbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek
Hi all,

I'm a bit surprised that there's no reply to this fairly explosive
idea. Maybe Nikos' text is too long, so let me summarize:

tl;dr: the proposal is to start services immediately during
installation (in %post), iff they are enabled in presets and the
system is live (not a chroot or such).

This would mean that e.g. after 'dnf install gpm' gpm would be running
when dnf exits.

In today's composes, the deps of gnome-desktop3 broke:

[gnome-desktop3]
gnome-desktop3-3.28.0-1.fc28.armv7hl requires gnome-themes-standard

That's a vital dependency for GNOME - gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-
session, mutter, nautilus, control-center etc. all depend on it.

So thanks to good old:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1427365
we get images with those packages silently omitted due to the
dependency issue. Network installs of the Workstation package set also
silently omit these packages. Of course, both of these now don't boot
to GNOME, since all the key bits of GNOME are missing.

This happened because of a rename of gnome-themes-standard, it seems:

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gnome-themes-standard/c/0fc2f169869824aea538e53b3318e4e62de9f6a9?branch=master
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-d271aeff0a

gnome-themes-standard itself was retired (that's the first commit), but
the update that introduces gnome-themes-extra is not stable yet, it is
only *pending* stable. So a compose got done with gnome-themes-standard
retired (thus left out), but gnome-themes-extra not stable yet (thus
not included).

Please be careful to *only* retire packages once their replacement has
actually been *pushed to stable*. *Queued for* stable is not enough.

This should be resolved with the next compose, as the gnome-themes-
extra update should get pushed stable before it's run.

Thanks folks!

[Test-Announce] Fedora 28 Final Freeze

2018-04-16 Thread Mohan Boddu
Hi all,

Today, April 17th 2018, is an important day on the Fedora 28
schedule [1], with significant cut-offs.

Today we have the Final Freeze [2]. This means that only packages
which fix accepted blocker or freeze exception bugs [3][4][5] will be
marked as 'stable' and included in the Final composes. Other builds
will remain in updates-testing until the Final release is approved, at
which point the Final freeze is lifted and packages can move to the
'updates' repository, pending updates will be pushed before final
release as zero day updates.

starting services in fedora

2018-04-16 Thread Nikos Mavrogiannopoulos
In [0] it was reported that after installation of pcsc-lite in Fedora,
no smart cards were functioning at the system. After rebooting Fedora
everything was functioning as expected.

The issue is that the pcsc daemon uses a socket-activated unit
which is installed by dnf, but not started (and hence the windows-
reminding behavior).

The text on our default services [1] mentions that a service is
"enabled by default on package installation" though there is a
distinction between 'enable' and 'start'.

The reason behind that is probably summarized in [2]:
> Why don't we start the service after installation?
>Installations can be in changeroots, in an installer context, or
> in other situations where you don't want the services started.

which is understandable, but does not necessarily lead to good user
experience in Fedora. Zbigniew made a good summary of what needs to be
done for that to work [3].

What do you think overall, is that something that makes sense to
address in general, or in socket activated services only, or not at
all?

regards,
Nikos

Flexible Metadata Format: Define Essential Attributes

2018-04-16 Thread Petr Šplíchal
Hi!

During the last weeks we've been experimenting with the Flexible
Metadata Format proof of concept on some real-life components:
There's a small SELinux example showing how FMF could be used for
filtering relevant tests [1], Jakub Krysl successfully used FMF
for generating different device setups for his VDO testing [2] and
Jan Scotka is now integrating FMF with the Meta Test Family.

As the next step we would like to start discussions about the test
metadata content, that is to define essential attributes which
should be stored close to the test code, directly in git repo. If
you are interested in contributing to this effort, please join our
discussions which will happen on the Fedora CI list.

I've created an initial draft for the first couple of attributes
on the Fedora wiki [3]. Please, review and share your thoughts.
Thanks.

Hi,
yes, you did, Travis. Thanks for it.

Well, I'd not call it unexpected. Once you announce API/ABI change it
is expected that at least a rebuild, or also a code change(s), will be
needed. The maintainer of the package which does that API/ABI change
can help with porting to the changes, either with a patch or at least
pointing to upstream guide with the port instructions to the new API,
of course, and it's highly welcome, but it's not always possible.

> Please do test rebuilds in COPR if you haven't
> already and try to fix any issues before actually doing the update.

I'm not sure it's fair to expect everyone doing this. First of all,
Travis doesn't seem to have commit rights to any of the referenced
packages, according to [1], neither he's part of provenpackagers group,
thus his best effort starts with this announcement and can be followed
by a pull-request or bug filling with a proposed change for the other
packages, but even that is sometimes not doable. Second, most/many
package maintainers are volunteers, kind of proxy for upstream work
they may not have any influence on, they just provide something useful
in Fedora for others, to make it easier to use for them. It doesn't
matter how large the package is or how many dependencies it has, from
my point of view. Compare it with something huge, like gcc updates,
mass rebuild(s) due to it and all the work involved around that. That
couldn't be done that smoothly with a group of volunteers "over the
weekend".

I do not know Travis and his position in that what I imply above, I
only try to give my point of view on this. It's always nice to see the
help from the package maintainer, but I do not think you can force it
in general. Not talking that the dependencies can have available
upstream fix already and the other maintainer can be aware of it, thus
the work you want from Travis might be useless and duplicated. Maybe.
It's all about coordination and it starts with these announcements.

Bye,
Milan
