Fwd: [Distutils]Introducing XAR - SquashFS based mountable executables - Calling OS/Distro Maintainers

2018-07-13 Thread Nick Coghlan
Hi folks,

Facebook just published an interesting bit of tech that uses squashfs
to create single-file executables that don't require a pre-installed
container engine to execute, but do place some more significant
demands on the FUSE subsystem, and also require a bootstrapping
executable to set up the filesystem mounts.

I recommend taking a look at their blog post, as xar seems like quite
an interesting capability to consider offering: whereas containers and
flatpaks give you both build time and runtime component isolation, xar
files aim to behave more like a statically linked ELF binary with no
supporting data files (no runtime isolation, but no direct
dependencies on the host filesystem either).

Cheers,
Nick.

Subject: [Distutils]Introducing XAR - SquashFS based mountable
executables - Calling OS/Distro Maintainers
To: distutils-...@python.org

Hi distutils,

Today Facebook Open Sourced a competitor to PEX and other zip based
distribution methods for Python (and potentially other languages).
Basically it's claim to fame is start up time for large modules being
similar to regular on file system modules due to extracting on read
via SquashFS mounted executables. For more information read our blog
post:
-
https://code.fb.com/data-infrastructure/xars-a-more-efficient-open-source-system-for-self-contained-executables/

The bdist_xar 'wheel' like plugin is also now in PyPI:
https://pypi.org/project/xar/

Main reason I wanted to post here was I'd love to reach out to our OS
maintainers on list (e.g. Mr Stinner) and talk about getting the
components of XAR into the OS's package repos. The main components
that make sense are:
- xarexec_fuse: https://github.com/facebookincubator/xar/
- squashfuse: a newer version with squashfuse_ll (and optionally zstd
support) https://github.com/vasi/squashfuse
- squashfs-tools: a newer version with zstd support (made optional I guess)

Once we had this, it would make building XARs as easy as building
wheels, even more so when we can define OS level dependencies for it!

Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions etc. -
Also want to note, Sumanah suggested I floated this here, I apologize
if this is a misuse of the list. If so, please ignore. I was torn
wether or not this is appropriate.

Thanks,
Cooper

[Test-Announce] 2018-07-16 @ 16:00 UTC - Fedora 29 Blocker Review Meeting

2018-07-13 Thread Adam Williamson
# F29 Blocker Review meeting
# Date: 2018-07-16
# Time: 16:00 UTC
# Location: #fedora-blocker-review on irc.freenode.net

Hi folks! We have 4 proposed Beta blockers to review, so let's have a
review meeting on Monday.

If you have time this weekend, you can take a look at the proposed or
accepted blockers before the meeting - the full lists can be found
here: https://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/ .

We'll be evaluating these bugs to see if they violate any of the
Release Criteria and warrant the blocking of a release if they're not
fixed. Information on the release criteria for F29 can be found on the
wiki [0].

For more information about the Blocker and Freeze exception process,
check out these links:
 - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:SOP_freeze_exception_bug_process

And for those of you who are curious how a Blocker Review Meeting
works - or how it's supposed to go and you want to run one - check out
the SOP on the wiki:

Have a good weekend and see you on Monday!

Any news here? I'm still waiting for the new GCC package to hit the F28
buildroot so I can issue a rebuild for GDB.

ok. Based on what I know now I think we can do it, but we really need
mock bootstapping to work and koji to have a way to use it for epel
builds before we switch builders to f29.

Well, I think people can still take pride in being good points of
contact or caretakers of the package for the Fedora community (and they
should, without packagers we would be no where!).

To my mind at least "own" implies a ability to do whatever you want with
your "property" and be upset/mad/disgruntled when someone else does
something with it, where 'caretaker' or 'point of contact' makes it more
clear that you are just trying to keep this package working and happy
for the others and when someone changes it you should be happy for the
help.

All that said, people who maintain their specs elsewhere are doing so,
and we have no good way of forbidding it, so we should probably stop
pretending we do.

I don't see that there is any way to enforce it. I suppose you could try
and have a hook to detect it, but it could well have false positives and
block legit commits.

Perhaps once we no longer use specs we can solve this. ;)

Sure, it would be any changes that are made to the Fedora spec vs the
upstream one. Hopefully someone realizes when this happens and works to
get the upstream spec updated as well, but I suspect there are cases
where it's not.

Note that the new brotli package does not change the library sonames,
they are still .so.1. So no dependencies should actually need
rebuilding.

Re: Updating Brotli to 1.0.5 in Rawhide

2018-07-13 Thread Jason L Tibbitts III
I wanted to point out that because libcurl now depends on brotli [1],
nearly every package in the distribution indirectly depends on
brotli. So repoquery --whatreqires brotli --recursive gives me 57775
packages.

If anyone feels up to it, I'm sure our friend pouar might like to have a
comaintainer or five.

1) This was added in commit 9f5f0d1189a299bbe690ebb6233ad3f746b5b801:

* Tue Jul 10 2018 Kamil Dudka  - 7.60.0-3

Self Introduction: Chris/BunnyApocalypse

2018-07-13 Thread BunnyApocalypse
Hello all, I'm Chris King, and on the internet I go by BunnyApocalypse, a name
which I created in 6th grade, and has stuck with me ever since.

I am a foss enthusiast and have been using Linux as my daily driver for a few
years now, although I only recently switched to Fedora. I don't have any major
experience to contributing to large open source projects, but I have a few
small ones on my GitHub here: https://github.com/BunnyApocalypse. I am
currently interning as a systems engineer at Kenna Security and am an incoming
freshman at Grinnell College in Iowa, where I plan to double major in CS and
philosophy. At the moment I have tentative plans to help out with the risc-v
port, but my first contribution is actually the unrelated packaging of a fork
of webkit optimized for low-powered systems (https://wpewebkit.org/). On IRC
I'm bunny__.

I look forward to meeting you and getting involved in the many amazing things
happening in the Fedora community!

Well, the list is incomplete because the mass rebuild is not complete.
Upper case letters and digits were submitted first. Currently packages
in the "perl" range are being submitted and with the exception of a few
which seem to have hung, most builds through the 'e' range have
completed.

So you will have to wait a while longer if you insist on having a
complete list of failures.

This list seems to only cover packages starting with an
uppercase letter, or a letter before lowercase 'i'

also, it only lists one maintainer, and omits co-maintainers

Would it be possible for a full list to be produced, and once
done, mentioned here?

thank you

fsck error creating live cd

2018-07-13 Thread Kalpa Welivitigoda
Hi,

I was trying to build a live cd with livecd-creator and towards the
latter part of the process I encountered the following error,

Checking filesystem /var/tmp/imgcreate-230i9kyl/tmp-fjf6k6vu/ext3fs.img
resizing /var/tmp/imgcreate-230i9kyl/tmp-fjf6k6vu/ext3fs.img
Checking filesystem /var/tmp/imgcreate-230i9kyl/tmp-fjf6k6vu/ext3fs.img
Error creating Live CD : fsck after resize returned an error (1)!

I also tried with increasing the value of ,
part / --size
in kick start file, but still get the same error.

What should I do to overcome this error?

Man Page Scan

2018-07-13 Thread Maryna Nalbandian
Hi fedora list,

In order to improve usability of packages in Fedora, project Man Page Scan
was created and its task is to provide consistency of man pages (and
documentation in general).

Please take a look at the bug tracker[1] and also please have a look at
the attached! There are 2 files:

   -

   man-page-day.sh
   -

   README.md

First file is the script itself and the second one is error/warning
explanation.

There are *841 components* with errors you should take a look (look at the
attached fedora_BZ). We are going to report found errors into Bugzilla[1]..

Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact
us.

Thank you for your attention,

Maryna Nalbandian & David Kutalek

cache=unsafe is documented at [1]. (Basically, in virt_install_command
you append ",cache=unsafe" to --disk parameter, next to "bus=virtio".)
It makes buildvmhost cache all disk operations and ignore sync
operations. Similar to nosync, but does not work on buildhw, works on
virthost level, applies to all operations, not just dnf.

The answers are 'No' and 'Not much'.

1. VMs are installed once and are running for week/months until they are
reinstalled. In the meantime guests and hosts are rebooted during
routine maintenance, to apply updates.

2. There would be no data loss in case of host or hypervisor crash.
Worst case, if guest operating system was corrupted sysadmins would need
to trigger VM install.

We do run guests for long time and reboot hosts. But I think there is no
danger if you ensure that guest OS is shut down cleanly before host reboot.

This is the case of Koji builders. They don't contain any special data,
just operating system and configuration that can be recreated easily.

Intend to retire python-openstack-nose-plugin

2018-07-13 Thread Matthias Runge
Hello,
the subject says it, I'm intending to retire
python-openstack-nose-plugin. It is old,
very old. Last commit upstream was 2012.

Any takers, otherwise I'd retire it in a week.

I've clicked randomly trough failures during the mass rebuild at [1].

I see quite a lot of commands not founds for gcc, cc, c++...

I think the maintainers should add them and that's fine, but it seemed
that during this change you said you will add those. Did it happen?

Yes, I've pushed over 2k commits adding those, however regexp might have
not catched all possible cases. Would appreciate if you would link such
packages so that I can fix them. Or maintainers can do it themselves.

Sorry, it was just random browsing and I cannot seem to find them again
except bionetgen, which Zbyszek already took care of.

bionetgen was one. It was failing with "/bin/sh: g++: command not found".
It is my package, I took care of that already. (Now it's failing on something
unrelated.)

going to automatically add BuildRequires: gcc and/or BuildRequires:

I'm going to do this tomorrow.

After which, I'm going to ask rel-eng to finally remove it from
buildroot. This will happen before mass rebuild. Stay tuned.

I've clicked randomly trough failures during the mass rebuild at [1].

I see quite a lot of commands not founds for gcc, cc, c++...

I think the maintainers should add them and that's fine, but it seemed
that during this change you said you will add those. Did it happen?

Please, only fix yours or those you care about.

Let the old cruft be FTBFS for a while to see if the maintainers care or
not. We need to see how many legacy python stuff is in the distro
because it is needed and how many is there just because it accidentally
works for 10 years without any changes.

Thank You.

that _fini and _init symbols disappeared. Is it expected feature of the
new binutils?
