OK, it's a fedora-review bug that got fixed 2 months ago, but there's
not been a release since:

https://pagure.io/FedoraReview/c/e357d1970aad94621a627c5f2d41513438bf45cb?branch=master

Could someone cut a release? Meanwhile, running try-fedora-review from
a Git checkout works.

PythonMacroError change tripping up fedora-review on Python packages?

2020-10-27 Thread Michel Alexandre Salim
When reviewing python-TestSlide
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1891963#),
fedora-review failed with:

error: attempt to use unversioned python, define %__python to
/usr/bin/python2 or /usr/bin/python3 explicitly

This seems related to the change introduced in F33:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/PythonMacroError

but we're a bit puzzled as to how it happens since we can't find any
macro usage that expands to %__python.

Out of curiosity I checked out python-six (fedpkg clone python-six &&
cd python-six && fedpkg srpm) and ran fedora-review on it, and it
failed with the same error; likewise the spec seems valid to me.

Any idea what could be the problem here? Thanks in advance!

Similarly virt-builder images won't be available for a few days.
I'm waiting for the Bytemark UK mirror to be updated.

Announcing rpminspect-1.2

2020-10-27 Thread David Cantrell

Announcing rpminspect-1.2

Yesterday I released rpminspect-1.2 along with
rpminspect-data-fedora-1.2. For details on the new inspections,
fixes, and improvements, please see:

https://www.burdell.org/posts/2020/Oct/26/rpminspect-12-released/

The new inspections in this release are:

config - Checks %config files in packages
doc - Checks %doc files in packages
patches - Reports changes for Patch files defined in spec files
virus- Checks for any viruses
politics - Implements the politics rules files for product releases

A big improvement is rpminspect detecting if builds being compared are
a rebase or not. A rebase is one where the package names match but
the version numbers do not. A rebased build will still report the
same things, but the severity level on most things will be lowered to
INFO. The reason for this is most rebased builds expect significant
changes, so we can still what those are but not fail the comparison.

BUG REPORTING AND FEATURE REQUESTS:

I really appreciate the feedback and bug reports from everyone.
Please continue reporting issues and RFEs here:

https://github.com/rpminspect/rpminspect

DATA PACKAGES:

The rpminspect-data-fedora package provides the rules for Fedora
package builds. Since multiple vendor data packages can exist on the
system, rpminspect-data-fedora provides a wrapper script so you can
easily run rpminspect with the Fedora rule set:

/usr/bin/rpminspect-fedora

WHERE TO GET BUILDS:

rpminspect and rpminspect-data-fedora are built in Fedora and EPEL.
Specifically: Fedora 31, Fedora 32, Fedora 33, rawhide, EPEL 7, and
EPEL 8. Updates have been submitted to Bodhi and you can find the
packages in the updates-testing repo for those releases. If you
install these, please consider commenting on the Bodhi update to
accelerate it's promotion to the stable updates repo.

If you encounter any problems with packages in these repos, let me
know.

VIEWING RESULTS

Aside from being able to run rpminspect locally, Fedora CI runs
rpminspect on completed builds. These results can be found in the
Bodhi web interface at:

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org

If you do not see rpminspect results for your build, let us know.

QUESTIONS:

For Fedora questions, please ask in either #fedora-ci or you can ask
me directly.

You may email me at dcantr...@redhat.com or find me on FreeNode as
dcantrell.

Thanks,

Re: Fedora 33 is available now!

2020-10-27 Thread Stanislav Ochotnicky

Yeah we could have that done before the release, but that just means
we'd have to update container build instructions in several places
(and then remember to keep them updated after next Fedora releases or
risk pulling old/EOL fedora images etc).

Anyway - it was just a note that the image tags are not up to date now.

Did you mean a Release Engineering, or a general engineering like FESCo?

Why module obsoletes are dangerous for mere packagers, while package obsoletes
are safe? Can you elaborate?

What are the other means which the 3rd parties use?

Obsoletes are necessary. People always remember the failed semiannual
distribution upgrade.

But people forget that a Fedora release is supported for 18 months. That's
a longer period than some upstreams support. But even longer lasting upstream
is a problem. (See bellow why.) In other words I believe it's necessary to
support an EOL in the middle of a Fedora release. Not only at the the release
EOL.

Also don't forget about EPEL. 10 years is a long time.

-- Petr

Here is the bellow

Let's look at an example when an upstream supports a version for two years with
a year overlap:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ← Fedora releases
A A A A ← Upstream supports version A
B B B B
C C C C

If Fedora enforced module EOL at Fedora EOL, versions would be added into
Fedora like this:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
A A A A
a . . . ← Fedora adds A into 1 and supports it up to EOL of 1
B B B B
b b b . . .
C C C C
c c c . . .

This reads: When the upstream released B, the packager would add it into all
supported Fedoras 1 and 2, brached Fedora 3, but never to Rawhide 4. That
means it would be missing from Fedora 4 because Fedora 4 would last longer
than the upstream. In other words, Fedora would stop supporting software
soonner than the upstream.

That's pretty awkard.

Now look at the case when Fedora can EOL a module at na arbitrary date:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
A A A A
a a a .
B B B B
b b b b b .
C C C C
c c c c c .

When upstream releases B, the packager adds it into Fedoras 1, 2, and 3 as we
have seen. In addition he adds it into 4 and when Fedora 5 and 6 become
available it can also host the version B because it's supported by the
upstream and because Fedora states that B will be supported in Fedora 3 for
the whole 18 months, in Fedora 4 for only 12 months and in Fedora 5 for only
6 months. The version B will be removed from Fedora 6 still when it is
Rawhide.

This is how an alignment of Fedora modules to upstream versions looks like.
Thus I conclude that Fedora should support module EOLs at an arbitrary date if
it ever wants to offer an independed life cycle for modules.

At the end of the day for Fedora, packagers are maintaining the modules, so
they should be able to mark a module as EOL when they feel like they don't
want it in the distribution anymore. As for module obsoletes, this is
necessary for supporting transitions and upgrades, which broke *two* Fedora
release upgrades because there was no way to handle this.

Additionally, with my third-party packager hat on, I need these to be
declarable in the module metadata so that it's easy to convey in a
machine-enforceable way when something is maintained/supported or not. I
don't know which third-parties you've been talking to, but as an actual
third-party packager who does work for an ISV that supports Fedora and
RHEL/CentOS for a product, I don't know where else I would put it.

EOL and Obsoletes in Modularity

2020-10-27 Thread Martin Curlej
Hi,

EOL and Obsoletes were planned as a feature of Modularity. The feature
should enable to set shorter/longer life cycles on Modules than the OS
release. The initial idea was to set this information in the disgit
metadata of a Module. As time went by the requirements have changed.

>From my point of view right now it seems that this information should not
be a part of the module (disgit, repository metadata). It is prone to human
error when we leave this in the hands of a packager. So this would need a
review of Engineering to be reliable.

Next is that a lot of 3rd parties like to handle the EOL and Obsoletes of
packages/modules by other means, which makes this redundant. Also, as the
release cycle of Fedora is so fast, I am not sure this is a necessary
feature at all

I spoke to people in the community and I got mixed information/opinions, so
I want to open a discussion about this feature. So WDYT? Is this necessary
for Fedora? If yes, how should we handle this?

Hi,

wtf was updated to wtf version 20200829 a few weeks ago
I use the files from https://sourceforge.net/projects/bsdwtf/, which is
updated by the person who updates
http://cvsweb.netbsd.org/bsdweb.cgi/src/share/misc/acronyms

Due to the lack of time, bsdwtf is still in the bsd-games package.

Thanks for letting me know about this new upstream , but the only thing
I want to keep from the bsd-games package is wtf, because it is super
useful when someone writes an acronym that I don't know yet and I also
think acronyms is a super useful tool to communicate :).

Best regards,

Indeed. Ok with guessing defaults as far as I can immediately change them
to something else.

For example, in my case: language English_US, timezone CET, keyboard it_IT.

(and some things are still not customizable though the system,
e.g. having ISO 8601 dates)

Best regards.

Thanks for the notice. I tested perl-DBD-MariaDB against mariadb:10.5 and
I confirm that all tests pass.
