Hi Brandon!

Thank you for looking into it! IMO it would be nice to have a separate
category (for Printing and then a separate for Scanning) like kernel,
databases or virtualization have - it would be lost in 'Usage and
customisation' group.

It is because the wiki page doesn't cover only 'How to debug printing
problems', but it covers more terminology, tricks, known issues, user
stories and (finally) how to debug and file the report - so it would be
nice to have subcategory for all of those.

And IMHO Fedora Linux's user base is mostly on desktop, it makes sense
to me to have printing and scanning on the main page.

If it is possible and you agree too, please let me know once you have a
time to create a draft :)

Again, thank you very much!

Not KeePassXC bug because:
- as I said, upstream devels confirmed that all strange quirks
bugreports they are receiving since a while, are from Fedora GNOME
(Wayland) only
- I received various feedbacks [1] [2] of problems disappearing as soon
I introduced this patch

xen soname bump

2021-05-06 Thread Michael Young
I have started the process to update xen to xen-4.15.0 on rawhide with a
build in the f35-build-side-40901 side tag. This changes many library
versions in the xen-libs package including some that don't normally
change. I believe the packages that use these libraries are qemu and
libvirt.

that's the way most third party repos deploy. Well, that package could
do*absolutely anything else at all* on your system with root

Right, of course, but there are more possibilities between 'completely
trustable repo' and 'totally evil repo'. We used to control the repos in
the set likely to be used by most Fedora users, and managed them
consistently. I assume that in the future there will be more repo
diversity with all kinds of rules and little leverage to make them
consistent, which would inevitably end up in confusion.

Essentially, now the package names are in a global name space, which, as
we remember from the programming languages history, tends to be problematic.

I liked Daniel Mach's ideas about vendor-lock and how it might actually
be a way to re-implement modularity. I think they would create implicit
namespaces that would mitigate the above concerns.

In rpm-ostree it works differently; the `fedora` and `updates` repos are rolled
together to make the "base image". Then client side we distinguish between the
"base image" and extensions. No layered RPM (operating system extension) can
replace (or cause to be removed via depsolve clash) a "base image package" by
default. (But you can of course use `override replace/remove` to do so, it just
requires very explicit action that will also remain very visible in `rpm-ostree
status`).

So it's even stronger in many ways than say vendor locking - we won't e.g.
silently depsolve back to an ancient kernel/glibc from the `fedora` repo ever
either (since no one ever wants that).

Hello everyone,

Notes and minutes from the Source-git meeting from yesterday can be found at:

https://pagure.io/fedora-source-git/sig/blob/main/f/meeting-minutes/2020-05-05.md

Heads up, that we decided to re-schedule these meetings on the 2nd and
4th weeks of the month as this seems to be a more suitable time for
most interested parties.
This is why the next meeting is scheduled for next week, Wednesday,
12th of May, 14.30 UTC.
Wannabe members and curious passers-by are welcome :)

Future schedule can be found in the SIGs calendar:
https://apps.fedoraproject.org/calendar/list/SIGs/

For more information about the Source-git SIG, see our wiki page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Source-git

Current work and discussions can be tracked in our Pagure project:

audacity in the side tag?

Actually, there's another consumer: wxmacmolplt, but it's stuck on
wxGTK3 compat package (that's at 3.0.x). I tried building it against
3.1.x and it builds successfully, but then throws failed assertions at
runtime. I need some time to investigate before I can switch it to
wxGTK-3.1.x, so don't wait for me.

Yes, there are a lot more consumers of wxGTK3 package - this change
doesn't affect them. wxGTK3 will still around at least until 3.2.0 is
released.

These builds have been completed and the side tag merged, although I don't
think there's been a Rawhide compose yet.

Fedora 34 GCP image

FYI - I published the Fedora 34 GCP image to the `fedora-cloud` project in GCP.

See https://pagure.io/cloud-sig/issue/328 for more details.

Currently you do have to provide cloud-init userdata to the instance (via the
user-data key).
This hopefully won't be the case once we include the newly added google compute

Hi,

Thanks, opened PRs with your commits:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/19523
https://github.com/systemd/package-notes/pull/8

Yes, if the distro has a debuginfod server, it should definitely be
included.

[Test-Announce] [Test Week] Fedora Linux Kernel 5.12 2021-05-09 through 2021-05-16

2021-05-06 Thread Sumantro Mukherjee
Hey All,

I would like to invite all of you to participate in the Kernel 5.12
Test week, which is happening from 2021-05-09 to 2021-05-16. It's
fairly simple, head over to the wiki [0] and read in details about the
test week and simply run the test case mentioned in[1] and enter your
results.

As usual, the Fedora QA team will hangout at #fedora-test-day@freenode
for question and discussion.

Is that something we need to worry about? I couldn't think of any new
rules to impose on repositories, but maybe dnf should have more
explicit
warnings when it sees multiple versions of the same package, or at
least
a way to show such versions.

Or how about teaching dnf that only certain repositories are allowed to
be used for updates (with an allowedlist for exceptions)? Then
microsoft
or any other third party repo could put hello-5000-1 into their repo
and
it could never compromise your system, as dnf would not consider the
3rd
party repo a valid update repo for a base system package.

Neal, I remember you had a really good idea about this - repo stickiness
(+repo equivalence classes). It might be a better option than vendor
stickiness. I'd like to explore this more in DNF 5 (see my excuses why I
don't want to do it in DNF 4 below).

That would require dnf to track where it got the package from though
and I am not sure if it does that at the moment?

This reminds me of an idea named Vendor Change from Zypper of openSUSE
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Vendor_change_update
This approach seems to solve our problems here?

Well, we do have the sticky vendor feature in DNF, DNF on openSUSE has
it switched on by default[1]. If we want to have this feature turned
on in Fedora, we could look at having it switched on.

[1]:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/openSUSE:Factory/libdnf/libdnf-0.55.0-Switch-allow_vendor_change-off.patch?expand=1

Yes, there's basic support for ventor stickiness in DNF.
It probably works fine with dnf install and upgrade.

I have concerns about the following commands:

* downgrade
  * not supported in Zypper
  * no support in libsolv
  * dnf emulates downgrades with installs, that implies vendor changes
* distro-sync
  * unsupported with allow_vendor_change=1
* install
  * installing explicit NEVRA lead to vendor change
  * vendor changes are not displayed in the transaction table
* updateinfo
  * dnf probably considers all package versions as update candidates
  * needs thorough testing at least
* literally all dnf commands that query the package set,
  because vendor impacts the meaning of the latest package.
  * list
  * info
  * repoquery
  * repoclosure
* COPR
  * enabling a COPR repo would do nothing if the repo provides
alternatives to packages shipped in Fedora

  * maybe a good thing, but definitely a change in user expectations

What's also important, DNF team currently doesn't have capacity to fix
all new bugs related to turning `allow_vendor_change` option on. Our
priority is RHEL 9 (that includes new modularity depsolver among other
bugs/RFEs) and DNF 5 (doing it right takes time and is relatively hard,
but we believe it pays off long-term due to bringing better APIs,
overall consistency etc.)

To be clear, I like the idea of vendor/repo stickiness turned on by
default, it could solve a lot of problems and eventually provide a very
simple alternative to modularity. I'm just not convinced that the DNF
stack is ready for that now and turning it on would most likely make
user experience worse. I'm fine with my team looking into this when we
have capacity to do so - that means in about one year from now.

Hi Neal,

basically the best and complete explanation can be found in Mike's CUPS
Plenary in PWG meetup (page 4 and on) [1], but I'll try to sum it up.

Apple basically stopped developing CUPS since the end of 2019, when Mike
Sweet (author of CUPS, PWG and OpenPrinting member) left Apple. Apple
didn't show any intent to work on CUPS at github (except one squash of
commits for CVEs in March 2020) - either it is an active development
(which is needed for moving to world without drivers) or
responding/solving upstream issues, so Mike forked CUPS from Apple to
OpenPrinting after some time of Apple inactivity. So OpenPrinting CUPS
version became upstream for CUPS packages in Linux (at least in Fedora,
Debian, Ubuntu AFAIK) and we will follow the Openprinting fork.

Recently, Mike has accepted Apple's offer to do some bugfixes in
Apple/CUPS, but Apple isn't interested in active development, so Linux
stays with Openprinting.
