When did the builders get switched to btrfs? Could it just be a matter of
accumulating enough inodes since then?

This causes problems with the i686 builders.

I wonder how this only started to happen recently? Has something
changed in BTRFS with the 6.3 kernel?
This only started happening a few days after builders were rebooted at
the end of June to apply updates (and kernel 6.3 was among those
updates, as far as I can tell).

This was always possible. I'm curious as to why it took so long for us
to hit it, though.

The recommended solution is to create a new subvolume for these
environments, since the inode count is reset for each subvolume.

What about impact beyond the builders?

Are end users are expected to do this? Do we have a tool for this?

FWIW, 64 bit inodes have existed in some Linux filesystems for a very
long time. On XFS, you'll get them by default - and quickly, not after
extended use - on a filesystem of sufficient size (around 1T-2T by
default, if I remember right.)

XFS does have a hack^Wmount option to force inodes into the 32-bit
range, but just FWIW we almost never see users running into problems
with 32-bit applications (but maybe because they know about the mount
option...)

But that still raises the question - why does it look like this
started to happen pretty suddenly around June 30?
The list of updates that were applied to builders in that timeframe
doesn't raise any alarm bells (except maybe the 6.3 kernel):
(see https://pagure.io/releng/issue/11531#comment-864471)
I read the release notes for the 6.3 kernel but didn't see any
mentions of BTRFS changes that could explain this. :(

Sure - I can't speak to what might have changed in btrfs, sorry - just
saying that binaries that choke on 64 bit inodes are going to get less
and less usable over time, I think.

One thing you could consider if you're ever really in a pinch is an
ld_preload that fakes up a 32-bit inode number for i.e. stat. The vast
majority of applications don't care about the inode number at all, and
it's really kind of unfortunate to fail the whole stat call just for that.

I recommending that the entire distro be compiled with LFS.
The non-LFS ABI is obsolete for exactly this reason.

Aren't even most 32-bit applications compiled with LFS? It looks like
anything with _GNU_SOURCE will get it, and IIRC that's not uncommon.
I'm curious how many 32-bit binaries are looking at inode numbers and
are NOT already LFS compatible.

It's indirect. Qemu depends on nvml and then kata-containers depends on
qemu.

A busy mail server using postfix and creating / deleting tons of queue
files as it processes? I guess it's really hard to come up with another
case without specific usage patterns (ie, deleting a ton of files and
recreating them over and over, some websites might do this?)

Anyhow, How about this:

* Today / soon, I will just reinstall all the buildvm-x86 vm's.
Thats pretty trivial to do (thanks ansible). It may cause some builds to
restart as I move things around, but it shouldn't be too much.

* If the problem seems to go away, then great and we can work on a
longer term solution, which could be some btrfs changes, switching
filesystems, dropping i686, etc. ;)

* If the problems persist, I can just reinstall again with xfs and the
inode32 mount flag.

* If that doesn't fix it, we may need to delay the mass rebuild and sort
out another fix.

Out of curiosity, what depends on nvml? The kata-containers packages
does not appear to. I saw reference to nvml in the
configure-hypervisor.sh script, but I didn't see a hard requirement.

I am aware of that, but having something concretely easily
reproducible that appears realistic makes it a lot easier for me to
talk to them about doing something to address it. Otherwise it's all

The 32-bit binary is what suffers the consequences.

The workload that /causes/ the problem can be anything which creates
lots of files.

I don't know of a 32-bit workload that would trigger this reliably and
reasonably quickly, but if there is one, then I would be interested in
knowing about it.

We used to have something in Btrfs to mitigate this called
inode_cache, but it was turned into a no-op in 5.11 and the
documentation was removed in 5.12:
https://github.com/kdave/btrfs-progs/commit/1af37385e258aabc684484aff8e5def442ada9bb

If we have a workload example that subvolumes don't work for, then I'm
happy to advocate upstream to do something to address the problem more
directly.

This is not restricted to mock or Koji, though. There just needs to be
one application that creates and deletes many files (or produces other
events that causes object ID allocation in btrfs).

For me it's going to be slow enough that the file system will likely be
recreated before I encounter the 31-bit object ID limit. But I wonder
if that's true for everyone.

Re: RFC: Roadmap for DNF5 in Fedora 39 / invoking the Contingency Mechanism

2023-07-14 Thread Richard W.M. Jones
I've been actually using dnf5 daily and while it's a little rough
around the edges it seems usable enough.

Here are some notes ...

(1) The allow_vendor_change option makes things strange. I think this
feature should be turned off (ie True) until it is fixed properly.

https://github.com/rpm-software-management/dnf5/issues/722

Also dnf downgrade seems broken, probably related to this.

(2) Current bugs that stop fedora-review or mock from working:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2217496
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2217496#c5

(3) [superficial] I don't like the update summary that it prints as
much as the old dnf one. The dnf5 one lacks "==" to delineate the
headers from the list.

Also the actual transaction lines are clipped so you cannot see the
full versions, eg:

[ 3/20] Upgrading nbdkit-server-0:1.35. 100% | 6.8 MiB/s | 228.4 KiB | 00m00s
[ 4/20] Upgrading nbdkit-basic-filters- 100% | 31.2 MiB/s | 831.8 KiB | 00m00s
[ 5/20] Upgrading nbdkit-basic-plugins- 100% | 32.5 MiB/s | 532.1 KiB | 00m00s
...
[12/20] Erasing nbdkit-0:1.34.1-1.fc38. 100% | 16.3 KiB/s | 100.0 B | 00m00s
[13/20] Erasing nbdkit-basic-filters-0: 100% | 14.2 KiB/s | 145.0 B | 00m00s
[14/20] Erasing nbdkit-basic-plugins-0: 100% | 8.9 KiB/s | 64.0 B | 00m00s

(4) It's a lot faster, great!

Rich.

Possible to combine ExclusiveArch?

2023-07-14 Thread Richard W.M. Jones
For some virt packages we need to combine 2 or 3 of:

  ExclusiveArch: %{kernel_arches}
  ExclusiveArch: %{qemu_sysemu_host_arches} # [1]
  ExclusiveArch: %{ocaml_native_compiler}

to mean only compile on the intersection of these arches. If you have
multiple ExclusiveArch lines then RPM seems to do the union of arches
which is the opposite of what anyone would want.

Dan Berrange came up with a clever way to do it though ...

  %ifnarch %{kernel_arches}
  ExcludeArch: %{_arch}
  %endif
  %ifnarch %{qemu_sysemu_host_arches}
  ExcludeArch: %{_arch}
  %endif

But this makes my head hurt. Is there a better way or could RPM
provide explicit union and intersection operators?

Rich.

In the meantime 4.1 was released.

I hope that in week or two we release 4.2 and we can set

config_opts['package_manager'] = 'dnf5'

for fedora-rawhide config. I have just created
https://github.com/rpm-software-management/mock/issues/1147

Of course, Koji admins can do that independently in their configs.

Sure, but... our builders are Fedora 38.
Is the dnf5 in f38 expected to be ready to do bootstrap chroots?
Or only the rawhide one?

Hmm,

F39 has dnf5-5.0.15-4.fc39

F38 has dnf5-5.0.13-2.fc38

and there are some important changes (like module enable or forcearch) but not sure if Koji will need this. Mock uses it
in some scenarions.

Close to zero. You have to do a really lots of builds. And keep the buildroots
of these (failed) builds.

For normal users the buildroots are reused. No chance to have so many inodes.

Copr terminate builders and spin up new one. And when build finish Copr retrieve only interresting artifacts. So it is
no issue there.

So it is only Koji.

Orphaned python-blockdiag et al

2023-07-14 Thread Dridi Boukelmoune
Greetings,

Since Pillow 10 landed in f39 the following packages are FTBFS:

https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-blockdiag
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-actdiag
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-nwdiag
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-seqdiag

Ever since the 3.0.0 release there has been zero activity on the
project and I don't have time nor interest to keep it on life support.

The following packages depend on them:

python-zuul-client.src
python3-sphinxcontrib-actdiag.
noarch
python3-sphinxcontrib-blockdiag.noarch
python3-sphinxcontrib-seqdiag.noarch

The only reason why I am also the maintainer of python-webcolors and
python-funcparserlib was blockdiag et al but since they require low
activity I will keep maintaining them for now.

Re: RFC: Roadmap for DNF5 in Fedora 39 / invoking the Contingency Mechanism

2023-07-14 Thread Vít Ondruch
Since DNF5 was forced upon me as a Rawhide user, I'd prefer to keep it
this way and actually rename DNF5 back to DNF to have e.g. man pages
correctly available.

Dne 13. 07. 23 v 23:59 Fabio Valentini napsal(a):

Hi all,

I'm opening this thread to trigger discussion of the roadmap for DNF5
in Fedora 39 - whether the switch still looks doable for this release,
or whether it should be reverted for F39 and postponed to F40.

This is also being tracked in a FESCo ticket:
https://pagure.io/fesco/issue/3039

The DNF5 Change was approved with the condition that bits that are
important to the distribution *MUST* work, but this does not seem to
be the case yet, six months after this was initially approved -
there's at least a few things that are still using dnf-3 or have been
broken since the switch to dnf5:

- rawhide mock / koji builds still default to dnf-3 (DNF 4)
- Fedora CI has been partially broken since the switch to DNF5 (c.f.
[fedora-ci/general#416](https://pagure.io/fedora-ci/general/issue/416)),
making CI results for bodhi updates at least partially useless
- fedora-review has been broken since the switch to DNF5 (c.f.
[FedoraReview#482](FedoraReview/issue/482)), which is really hurting
the rate at which new packages are getting reviewed and added to
Fedora
- (not an exhaustive list, feel free to mention other things, I will
update the list to include them)

We are now mere days before the Fedora 39 mass rebuild is scheduled to
start, so I think it's time to start talking about the roadmap for
getting missing pieces into place for Fedora 39, or if that is not
possible within this timeframe, whether the contingency mechanism
should be enacted.

+1 for postponing. We have hit issues preparing CI environment via
ansible and applying workarounds to make dnf5 work is imho not the way
to go with such core tool. It should be there as opt-in so it can get
tested but not default.

Re: Several questionable packages installed on fresh system

2023-07-14 Thread Vít Ondruch
(adding the list back on CC, since it seems this went private just by
mistake)

You know, my initial email listed 4 packages and removal of them might
result in saving of tens of MBs. They are small on itself but they pull
in much bigger dependency chains. And that typically happens just by
evolution.

Maybe exiv2 really isn't the biggest package ATM, but who knows what
dependency it will grow in a year. Or maybe it won't. I don't know.

I cannot ignore this on principle.

Dne 13. 07. 23 v 20:59 Rex Dieter napsal(a):
I'm surprised you'd consider this for such a small space savings (<
200k).  I figured it a better use of everyone's time to focus on
bigger things.

Technically, the translations are packaged in the wrong place. I
hadn't considered that to be much of a problem since the soft
dependency defaulted to getting them installed.
If you're planning on breaking that presumption, so that translations
wouldn't get installed, then I'll probably have to do something about it.

On Thu, Jul 13, 2023 at 12:00 PM Vít Ondruch wrote:

Yes, we would have the same conversation.

And generally, what you said about the translations does not make
sense to me. Are they in the right package or not?

IOW the only way we would not have this conversation is if there
was not the split between the -libs and executable. It does not
seems to me that you are favor in this split yet we have it but
don't benefit from it.

Vít

Dne 13. 07. 23 v 17:51 Rex Dieter napsal(a):

Seems like you may have not considered the translations angle, so
let me spin it another way...

If I adjusted where translations are packaged (put with -libs),
so that the base 'exiv2' package was < 1mb (~200k uncompressed),
would we still be having this conversation?

On Thu, Jul 13, 2023 at 10:10 AM Vít Ondruch
 wrote:

1) I am sure I never had any need to use the exiv2 executable
and I would be surprised if majority of Fedora users had
different experience

2) I don't understand what else then space saving and e.g.
optimization of install media should be the reason for the split.

But given that the split as well as the recommends are
correct, then I'll probably ask to remove the `exiv2` from
the install media via kickstart or whatever is the right way
to customize the install media content.

Vít

Dne 13. 07. 23 v 15:45 Rex Dieter napsal(a):

I don't see any good reason to change here.  Mostly because
the status quo is already a compromise to leave the base
package as an optional Recommends (ie, removable).

This is considering that most of the space in question here
are translations, that strictly-speaking, probably ought to
be included in the -libs package anyway.  if those files
were moved, the space saving for the base package would be
negligible.

Imagine Red Hat shutting down CentOS Stream in a year or two just
because they [Alma, etc.] started doing rebuilds. :-D

Re: CentOS Stream, RHEL, and Fedora [was Re: What is Fedora?]

2023-07-14 Thread Carlos Rodriguez-Fernandez

This is actually good news, especially for the CentOS Stream project.

Quotes:

After much discussion, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation board today has
decided to drop the aim to be 1:1 with RHEL. AlmaLinux OS will instead
aim to be Application Binary Interface (ABI) compatible*

We will also start asking anyone who reports bugs in AlmaLinux OS to
attempt to test and replicate the problem in CentOS Stream as well, so
we can focus our energy on correcting it in the right place.

While all of these changes open up a lot of opportunities, we want to be
clear about the fact that we are still dedicated to being good open
source citizens. We’ll continue to contribute upstream in Fedora and
CentOS Stream and to the greater Enterprise Linux ecosystem, just as we
have been doing since our inception, and we invite our community to do
the same!
