orphaning prometheus* and some other golang packages

2023-10-07 Thread Mark E. Fuller

Hi all,

I picked up a number of prometheus packages (see below) a few months
back during the golang scramble after an unresponsive maintainer.
I don't have the time or the interest (or the technical chops) to
maintain them.

Obviously these are important packages, so at this time I am announcing
my intention to orphan them.
Unless I hear from someone who would like to actively collaborate on
their maintenance, I'm going to orphan them in approximately one week:

golang-github-prometheus
golang-github-prometheus-node-exporter
golang-github-prometheus-exporter-toolkit
golang-github-prometheus-community-runit

golang-opentelemetry-otel
golang-google-grpc

Best,

This sounds like a package conflict error. Two packages are trying to
manage the same file. I find no bugzillas for chkconfig or
alternatives. I infer from that that packages within the same fedora
version don't have this conflict. Thus, I suggest that you use an f38
instance, so that this package conflict doesn't occur. No guarantees,
though, maybe no one else has hit this error. If it still doesn't work,
you should open a bugzilla against one of the packages with the
information you have provided in this email.

2. `dnf install toolbox`

4. `toolbox enter centos-stream-9`
5. Do the package installs of centpkg
6. Do the builds

Mass rebuilds and multiple developers can make this much harder than
expected. The history looks linear, but it may be that the bootstrap blew
up and had to be restarted OR it does need to do a double loop. Or
developer A rebuilt something when it wasn't needed while B was doing
something in a side tag at the same time. Or you find that rust or go
needed to have old/new mixes which weren't needed last time because
ordering didn't matter that time but does now (this can be due to flags or
package differences.) Many of these things are things which the regular
package maintainers know to do with their pets, but other people do not.

Just out of curiosity because I never used toolbox.
Is the above not also accomplishable with a local container?

podman run -ti --name=dev quay.io/centos/centos:stream bash -li

Or does it have additional features?

Actually, Michael says he is using `centpkg mockbuild` here, so my
expectation is that Mock bootstraps an appropriate chroot and performs
the build there. The base system's Fedora version (37 here) should not
matter, apart from providing a working version of `centpkg` and Mock.
Because the bootstrapping fails, to me this sounds like a bug in either
Mock or `centpkg` configuration. Unfortunately, I do not package for
CentOS Stream, so I do not have a guess what it could be exactly. I
agree that seeing Fedora 38 mixed in there seems strange.
