Uh, the last time an upstream has complained about "Fedora 40 is shipping
without the latest version of" their software and "missing out on new
features", it turned out that said "new features" mainly consisted of a
dangerous backdoor (xz CVE-2024-3094)…

SVT-AV1 2.1 Released With Yet More Performance Improvements

2024-05-28 Thread Ryan Bach via devel
SVT-AV1 that started out as an open-source AV1 video encoder at Intel and more
recently an an Alliance of Open Media project quietly released SVT-AV1 v2.1
last week. With this new SVT-AV1 release are yet more performance optimizations
and tuning.

Hassene Tmar of Meta (formerly Intel) continues to lead the new SVT-AV1
releases. With SVT-AV1 v2.1 there are new optimizations, significant speed-ups
to various presets while maintaining similar quality levels, ARM optimizations,
and other enhancements.

The M0, M3, M5, and M6 presets are seeing 12~40% speed-ups while maintaining
similar quality levels to prior releases. The compression efficiency of presets
M11 to M13 meanwhile have improved by 1~2%. Not bad at all considering all of
the huge gains SVT-AV1 has made over the past several years.

AV1 logo

Downloads and more details on the SVT-AV1 2.1 changes via SVT-AV1 on GitLab.
I'll be running some new SVT-AV1 benchmarks soon.

This is a great addition to the docs, thanks for taking it on! I added
a few comments in the PR, but overall this is a huge improvement.

I think you misunderstood. As far as I could tell he didn't have any
issues. It was a theoretical question about something he thought might
happen. And it also required that the dnf process would crash while
doing the update.

Package Maintainer Docs: Pull Request Guide

2024-05-28 Thread Otto Liljalaakso

Hello,

Pull requests are an important aspect of how Fedora packaging works,
and, crucially, the easiest way for new contributors to get started.
Unfortunately, there has been almost no documentation available about
that topic. To remedy that situation, I submitted a pull request to
Package Maintainer Docs [1]. Please take a look and give feedback,
either in the pull request or here on devel.

Re: small logic issue with system upgrades

2024-05-28 Thread Roberto Ragusa

On 5/28/24 09:38, Samuel Sieb wrote:

There is nothing to fix.  The ssh process has already loaded the libraries, so
it won't crash if you replace them.  After you upgrade the libraries, you just
need to restart it to get the new ones loaded.  Any existing connections will
still be processes running with the old libraries.  What exactly are you
expecting?

I am expecting exactly what you have described, but the first mail
in this thread is claiming an inability to fork, and that is (we are stating the
same thing!) not expected.
Why is the original poster saying that he is not able to reach the machine
during the upgrade because of inability to fork sshd?
I've become suspicious of maybe dlopen tricks failing near the moment a new
connection triggers a fork, which would be interesting to be aware of,
if any such case.

(note that you say "any existing connections" uses the old libraries,
but indeed also new connections will use the old libraries, if the restart
has not been done yet, so the claimed issue should definitely never happen)

Regards.

Yes, and I already have a reviewed package - spiped,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2265862 - and AFAIU the next
step should be creating a dist-git repository, hence the packager group
application :)

Right... good catch. Of course, the FreeBSD webserver had an automatic
redirect, but it was kind of high time I moved that over to my own
website. Thanks!

Re: FAS login not possible

I forgot to mention that additionally to bad requests and time outs, sometimes it is
"unauthorized" (so 401). I just had that one. Unfortunately, I forgot to enable
debug before :( I hope I manage to get used to enable debug over the next days when I
login :D

Logging in to src.fedoraproject.org or pagure.io has been flaky to me in
recent weeks. I got Gateway Timeout a few minutes ago when logging in to
src.fedoraproject.org. I tried again and then it worked. Other times
I've gotten errors when logging in, but when I tried again I was logged
in without submitting the login form a second time.

It sounds like perhaps a proxy is misbehaving... if there's any way you
could enable debug console next time you login and see what proxy you
were hitting when the timeout or issue happened that might be good info
for us.

I can confirm the experiences of Björn. It occurs from time to time. It
sometimes is a time out, and sometimes a bad request. I will try to collect
data about it and let you know. The issue is the FAS login screen, it is not
related to any service that uses its token.

How is that relevant? Restarting sshd doesn't touch existing ssh client

The answer to why is sshd failing to fork during ssl libs upgrade

No, it's not, because there is no expectation of that happening. There
is no means to even do this in any reasonable way.

It may lead to something to fix in the sshd code or in the way openssh
is patched/packaged.

There is nothing to fix. The ssh process has already loaded the
libraries, so it won't crash if you replace them. After you upgrade the
libraries, you just need to restart it to get the new ones loaded. Any
existing connections will still be processes running with the old
libraries. What exactly are you expecting?

Who cares about what is considered a "supported" upgrade method today?

The interesting topic on the table is the robustness (or lack of)

is worth investigating.
It may lead to something to fix in the sshd code or in the way openssh
is patched/packaged.
(hasn't the xz backdoor thing given everybody a lesson on this?)

Regards.

Self-Introduction: Peter Pentchev

2024-05-28 Thread Peter Pentchev
Hi,

My name is Peter Pentchev. I am a software developer who has been
wrangling computers since 1986 and free/libre-software OS's and
distributions since 1997 (Slackware and RedHat (way before RHEL) at
first, then a decade or two of FreeBSD, then a decade or two of Debian).
I have maintained packages for FreeBSD since the year 2000, for Debian
since 2004-2005, and (unofficially, in personal and vendor repositories)
for CentOS and RHEL since 2013.

My main interests lie in system and network programming, but I have
dabbled in almost all areas of software development over the years with
varying degrees of success. My longest programming experience is in C
and Perl, but lately I prefer a mixture of Rust, type-checked Python,
and, when absolutely necessary, very carefully written POSIX shell and
Bash. If my packager group application is accepted, I will try to
help several packaging teams within Fedora (Python, Perl, Rust, maybe
some other topic-based ones) and probably separately package some tools
that I use on a daily basis, some written by me, some by others.

Thanks for reading this, and thanks for working on Fedora - it takes so
many different kinds of people doing so many different kinds of tasks to
create and maintain a working software distrubition!

G'luck,
Peter
