deprecating and dropping xmlsec1-gcrypt and xmlsec1-gnutls

2024-06-25 Thread Tomas Halman
Hi everyone!

I'm a maintainer of xmlsec library.

The xmlsec library has a plugin system that implements the actual crypto
operation. Those implementations/plugins are provided as xmlsec
subpackages.

As Fedora is moving away from gcrypt, I will deprecate and stop shipping
xmlsec1-gcrypt. Unfortunately xmlsec1-gnutls depends on xmlsec1-gcrypt.

So I plan to drop xmlsec1-gnutls from Fedora too and keep the
xmlsec1-openssl and xmlsec1-nss subpackages.

The latest version (1.3) resolved the cross dependency between gcrypt and
gnutls but it introduces huge and incompatible changes in API so we can't
update to 1.3 yet. Other components are not ready for that.

Please let me know about any concerns for dropping xmlsec1-gnutls

soname bump: xmlsec 1.2.39 in rawhide

2024-06-05 Thread Tomas Halman
Hi,

I prepared a new build of libxml that brings mainly minor fixes.

There is also a new major release/branch 1.3.x that breaks the API
compatibility, I keep that out of Fedora at the moment.

Upcomming passwd utility change

2024-02-05 Thread Tomas Halman
Hi guys,

As a part of the libuser deprecation effort [1]
 we are going to
replace passwd in Fedora (now coming from separate project) with the one
coming from shadow utils.

The utilities are pretty the same but there are minor differences described
in the change page (some options have different names like --minimum is now
--mindays).

The missing --stdin option has been implemented in shadow utils passwd.

You may need to update your scripts in case they use passwd with old long
switch names.
Sorry for inconvenience.

Re: F39 Change Proposal: LibuserDeprecation (System Wide)

2023-07-07 Thread Tomas Halman
Hi,

I went through the thread and there are good points that I was not aware
of. But libuser is now pulled into every installation and considering the
state of the library (not being developed) I still think we should do
something about it. The benefit is small for tools like passwd.

The passwd utility has a compile time option for libuser (as well as other
dependent packages with one exception where it can be fixed with small
effort). So we can keep the current passwd utility for time being until the
one from shadow util is ready and SELinux adjusted.

Some use cases (like puppet) justify the effort for keeping libuser
available in EPEL.

xmlsec1 broken update in rawhide

2023-06-23 Thread Tomas Halman
Hi

Recently I prepared an update of xmlsec1 package to version 1.3 in rawhide
but by this step I broke other packages like lasso (I'm sorry for that my
mistake).

Since I did not manage to fix (Simo also tried with help from the upstream
community - thanks for the effort) and it is blocking others work I
reverted the change today and we are back to 1.2.

The update to 1.3 will come later once the issues are resolved.

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your offer. I'm taking over few packages from Jakub Hrozek
now and he provides
all the information that I need. So far so good :)

Hi,

My name is Tomáš or Tom for short.

I have worked with linux since Red Hat 3 and Fedora 1 :)
Now I would like to join the community and put some effort into Fedora. We
might have met before on Devconf or Fosdem, eventually in the ZeroMQ
community.
