So I formatted 2 USB sticks using fdisk and mkdosfs taking special care to make it look as close as possible as the normal USB stick partition table - the other users windows did not read it anyway. So Fedora is definitely evil and perhaps if I had used ext2 the interoperability would have been better - the user would just download the fs driver or one of the userspace windows solutions and it would work. Being unix-ish doesn't really help, you need an actual filesystem driver for the OS. To my knowledge there is nothing preventing other OS to support all the LinuxFS out there and until they choose to do so users of such OS will simply have to install tools like ext2read [1] ( Windows 7 ) if they want to access files on devices that have LinuxFS on them. I assume that OS-X has not trouble with mounting various LinuxFS given that it is a *nix breed.
