Switching back to JFFS2 for 11.3.0 XO-1

2011-09-30 Thread Daniel Drake
Hi,

Unfortunately I haven't made enough progress on the XO-1 ubifs issues
so I'm planning to drop us back to JFFS2 for the first release
candidate of 11.3.0.
ubifs still remains as a very easy build customisation.

The main outstanding problems are that we have some systems which fail
to boot, and that our own partitioning overhead plus the unavoidable
ubifs overhead is really a bit much (over 75mb I think).

Progress is being made on both issues, but won't be ready in time for
the freeze for the release.

XO 1.75 ofw_olpc.c question

2011-09-30 Thread Andrei E. Warkentin
Hi,

Since OFW is resident, I thought it would be nice to try to enter into
it with something like -

__olpc_ofw(enter, 0, NULL, 0, NULL);

I'm doing this from SVC mode.

Yet this just hangs. Am I doing something that's not supposed to work
by design? Is there any
hardware state that I need to reset into a known state (PIC state
maybe..?) The overall effect
is simlar to invoking arch_reset blindly without setting up identity
map, but I didn't yet try doing this
prior to the __olpc_ofw call so I'm just conjecturing...

Thanks,
A

this works on our x86 laptops (via sysrq), so it's not broken by
design.

i think no one has looked into making it work on 1.75 yet, partially
because much of what one can do from olpc_ofw() (i.e., peek and poke
registers/memory/etc) is available from cforth, which runs permanently
on the service processor, the second core in the SoC. but it would be
nice to have it work.

Re: [Sugar-devel] Help needed for childrens with physicals limitations / ayuda para niños con discapacidades

2011-09-30 Thread Andres Aguirre
thanks Walter and Peter for the list of activities to test!
Yesterday we release the first version of mouseCam
http://activities.sugarlabs.org/es-ES/sugar/addon/4487 all the
feedback is welcome!
The marks needed to use the activity are inside the .xo, in the marks folder.
cheers

it will be great! thank you :)
if someone knows sugar applications that could be used with mouse and
are simple it will be great to do some tests, now I'm using sokoban
that has simple interaction and is very interesting.

 Maze, Memorize, SliderPuzzle, Implode, ...

I have a contact at Ryerson University here in Toronto who runs the rather
large research program which specifically works in the area of human device
interaction for technology  for severely disabled children, but he does not
currently work with the XO because of the small form-factor.  Would you
still like me to forward this to him as he might have some insight for you.
  He's a big open-source advocate.

Subject: [Sugar-devel] Help needed for childrens with physi
cals limitations / ayuda para niños con discapaci
        dades

Hi all, I want to show you the first working prototype of mouseCAM
activity, wich is design to help childrens with physical limitations.
This activity communicates directly with the X server of the
GNU/Linux, being able to be use in the XO computer with any activity
or with the sugar system as well as any GNU/Linux with the graphic X
server system. We are working at Faculty of Engineering, UdelaR,
Uruguay in a course called NEXO with the aim of developing solutions
for childrens in a special school here in Uruguay and I am working
with Lorena, Guillermo and María Emilia to bring solutions to the
childrens that nowdays can't use the XO computer. I need help, maybe
people in this list knows about activities with very simple mouse or
keyboard interaction, that can be used in this context. Also we are
working in a turtleart plugin, in this case the children show a image
that corresponds with a block and then the corresponding block
connects with the last block in the programming area, this will be use
to develop very simple programs, like draw geometric figures or to
control the butia robot, but is a great improve for them.

Memorize - use scenario

2011-09-30 Thread Tabitha Roder
We have been seeing lots of changes to Memorize and some things are a bit
confusing. I was thinking that it might help to write some scenarios for how
you might use Memorize. So here goes...

In class on Monday the teacher says each student is to make a Memorize game
to help learn the elements of the periodic table.

Two students meet at another students house. They decide to play the game
they made about the periodic table. They each have different games so they
collaborate and play all three games.

On Tuesday in class the teacher says they should each make a Memorize game
that just looks at a set of elements based on whether they are metals or
nonmetals. In doing this task they can edit the existing game or they can
create a new game.
They are then asked to share their games so they can practice different
sets.

On Wednesday the teacher says they should each make a Memorize game that
just looks at solids or gases. They are told they should make sure they save
the game from Tuesday so they will have a bigger set of games to play later.

On Thursday and Friday they are given time to share and play the games they
have been creating with their classmates.
