Re: XO-3 competitor?

2011-11-17 Thread Peter Robinson
There's a commercial model that the company is going to be selling in
the UK I believe at a higher price to recover the development costs or
something along those lines. I've been keeping an eye out for UK
availability but I've not seen it yet either.

I also saw this unit from Toys-R-Us the other day. It looks like a
standard tablet embedded in a rubber case.

I think the $35 price-tag is for students (and subsidized by the
Indian govt.), and doesn't contain a GPRS modem. The commercial
version is priced at INR 2999 (~$60), and will have a GPRS modem
(Probably without 3G capabilities). Both h/w versions won't have a
camera and speakers (but will have audio in/out jacks).

There's news floating around that another faster version is in the
works and early pieces might start to appear around Feb 2012[1].

Here's another:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/news/hardware/Aakash-gets-3-lakh-pre-bookings-orders/articleshow/10764945.cms

'Lakh' is a unit in the Indian number system (1 lakh = 100,000)

Although it does say that the pre-bookings don't involve any payment,
so it could just be lots of interested people filling up a web-form :-)

True, think some of the kernel modules are missing for iptables
support.

Sugar forces the use of link-local addresses for ad-hoc networks,
doesn't even try to use dhcp once connected to the XO based AP, but
while in gnome the network behaves normally. This is a real PITA if you
want to use a ad-hoc network with a dhcp server to handle the ip address
assignment, and thus the routing to the gateway. This should be better
with NM-9 and sugar 95.2 but I haven't tried yet.

That is just some routing and dns... :/

Not yet, but I have some work in progress.
